The companies offer different semiconductor exposures, though, and their latest reported quarters show what investors should weigh: AMD’s growth was led by data-center products, while SK hynix reported exceptionally strong results amid AI-related memory demand and rising memory prices.
How are AMD and SK hynix different investments?
AMD designs and sells CPUs, data-center accelerators, gaming and client chips, and embedded products. SK hynix is centered on memory, including DRAM, NAND and high-bandwidth memory (HBM). Buying one stock rather than the other is therefore not simply a choice between two companies competing in the same product category: it changes an investor’s exposure to the semiconductor business.

AMD’s range of products offers several sources of revenue, but does not make its results immune to weakness in an individual segment. SK hynix’s results are more directly tied to memory demand, product mix and pricing. Both companies have reported AI-related demand, but the mix of products and the risks behind their earnings differ.
What do the latest reported results show?
The figures below come from AMD’s Q2 2026 company release and SEC-filed 10-Q, and SK hynix’s preliminary Q2 2026 release dated July 29, 2026. AMD reports in U.S. dollars under U.S. reporting requirements; SK hynix reports preliminary K-IFRS figures in Korean won. The periods and accounting bases matter: raw amounts and margins should not be treated as directly comparable.

| Company | Latest reported quarter | What drove the result | Relevant qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMD | Q2 2026 revenue was $11.5 billion, up 50% year over year. GAAP gross margin was 54%; GAAP operating income was $2.0 billion, net income was $2.3 billion and diluted EPS was $1.38. | Data Center revenue reached $6.7 billion, up 107% year over year. Client and Gaming revenue rose 6% to $3.8 billion, while Embedded revenue rose 19% to $977 million. | Gaming revenue fell 31% to $779 million, primarily because of lower semi-custom revenue. Growth was not uniform across the business. |
| SK hynix | Preliminary Q2 2026 revenue was 79.3187 trillion won and operating profit was 60.5426 trillion won, a reported 76% operating margin. Net profit was 93.9226 trillion won, or a reported 118% net margin. | The company cited HBM, AI-server DRAM and enterprise SSDs, alongside significant quarter-over-quarter increases in DRAM and NAND prices. | The release labels the results preliminary and reports K-IFRS figures. The unusually high net income relative to operating profit warrants checking the detailed statements before drawing conclusions about recurring profitability. |
AMD’s data-center momentum sits alongside mixed segment results
AMD’s Q2 2026 revenue and Data Center figures were reported in its company release and SEC-filed 10-Q. The 10-Q gives useful context to the headline: Data Center was the clear growth engine, while Gaming declined. CEO Lisa Su described the quarter as one of “record revenue and profitability” and said Data Center revenue more than doubled year over year. That is management’s characterization of the reported quarter, not evidence that the same growth rate will continue.
The annual baseline is also relevant. For FY2025, AMD reported revenue of $34.6 billion, up 34% from 2024, and a 50% gross margin. Data Center revenue was $16.6 billion, up 32%; Client and Gaming revenue was $14.6 billion, up 51%; and Embedded revenue was $3.5 billion, down 3%. The company attributed Data Center growth primarily to demand for fifth-generation EPYC processors and Instinct MI350 series GPUs. These historical results show breadth in AMD’s business, but they do not establish future growth or the stock’s value at a current price.

SK hynix’s earnings reflect strong memory demand and pricing
SK hynix reported FY2025 revenue of 97.1467 trillion won and operating profit of 47.2063 trillion won. The company said HBM revenue more than doubled year over year and described demand for conventional server memory as strong.

It also reports long-term agreements with around 10 customers. Those agreements are evidence of customer arrangements, not proof of guaranteed revenue, fixed prices or insulation from a downturn in memory demand.

Because the Q2 net-profit figure exceeds operating profit and the release is preliminary, investors should examine the detailed statements and reconciliation before treating the reported net margin as a trend or annualizing the quarter. One unusually strong quarter is not, by itself, a normalized earnings forecast.
What should investors compare before choosing a stock?
Match valuation to a realistic earnings outlook
The releases establish historical results, not which stock is cheaper. A useful comparison needs current, same-date market prices and share counts to calculate market capitalization, as well as debt and cash to assess enterprise value. Investors can then compare valuation with forward earnings and cash flow estimates, checking what growth and profitability those estimates assume. Without those inputs, calling either stock a better value would be unsupported.

Test how concentrated the growth is
For AMD, ask whether data-center growth can persist and how much the investment case depends on accelerators and server processors scaling successfully. For SK hynix, consider whether demand for HBM and other server memory can support results if memory prices change. The latest quarter’s AMD segment mix and SK hynix’s pricing commentary give investors specific exposures to assess; neither tells them how those conditions will develop.
Check cash, debt and investment needs on an aligned basis
AMD reported $13.1 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments at June 27, 2026, and $5.3 billion in operating cash flow for the first half of 2026. SK hynix said cash and cash equivalents reached 88 trillion won at the end of Q2 2026, total debt was 18.6 trillion won and net cash was 69.4 trillion won. These are company-reported figures in different currencies and accounting contexts; compare aligned periods and definitions, and include capital needs and shareholder returns rather than treating the balances as directly interchangeable.

Decide what kind of semiconductor risk you want
AMD’s product range spans several markets, but its latest quarter still showed that those markets can move in different directions. SK hynix offers more direct exposure to memory demand and pricing, which can make an earnings surge harder to extrapolate when conditions change. Investors should decide whether they are comfortable with those respective concentration and cycle risks before weighing potential returns.

The company reports available through October 7, 2026, show substantial recent AI-related demand at both businesses, but they do not settle the stock-picking decision. No matched current prices, valuation measures or forward earnings estimates were established here, and both companies’ latest results describe past performance rather than guaranteed future outcomes. A defensible choice requires updating those valuation inputs and judging each company’s earnings outlook against the risks above; the earnings headlines alone do not justify a buy ranking.
