There is no evidence here for a universal winner between AMD’s Versal AI Core XQRVC1902 and other space-grade FPGAs. A sound comparison matches the radiation environment, shielding, test conditions and mitigation first, then compares performance on the mission’s actual workload. The XQRVC1902 combines programmable logic, processing, AI/DSP acceleration and connectivity, but those architectural features alone do not establish radiation assurance or application-level performance.

What the XQRVC1902 is—and which specifications apply

The XQRVC1902 is a specific AMD Versal AI Core XQR adaptive SoC intended for spaceflight use. AMD’s DS946 is the primary device-specific reference for its specifications and radiation characterization. AMD describes ruggedized packaging, temperature support, production testing under class B or class Y flows, and characterization for total ionizing dose (TID) and single-event effects (SEE). These manufacturer descriptions are not proof that every design using the part meets every mission’s assurance requirements.

Do not substitute figures from the Versal AI Edge XQR datasheet, DS955, for XQRVC1902 specifications merely because both devices belong to the Versal XQR family. AMD’s space portfolio page is useful for orientation, but check DS946 and its revision for exact AI Core values. The cited DS946 revision is 1.2, dated 2025-02-19.

How to compare radiation tolerance fairly

Radiation tolerance is not a single number. Compare each device under the same mission assumptions and keep distinct radiation effects separate. For every reported result, identify whether it is a test measurement or a model estimate, and record the conditions that give the figure meaning.

What to compare Details to record Why it matters
TID Total dose and units; dose rate; bias; temperature; sample population; and end-of-test criteria, where provided. A dose figure without test conditions does not establish how the device or design behaves under a different exposure profile.
SEL Latch-up immunity or threshold, applied voltage, junction temperature, particle species and fluence. A stated threshold is not a guarantee against every single-event effect.
SEU and functional interrupts Whether the result concerns configuration memory, block or embedded RAM, processor or logic upsets, or functional interruptions; whether the rate is measured or modeled; and whether EDAC or configuration scrubbing is assumed. Different upset mechanisms affect different parts of a system, and mitigation assumptions can change the reported rate.
Mission environment Orbit, altitude, inclination, solar conditions, shielding thickness and material, and environment model. Rates based on different orbital and shielding assumptions are not directly comparable.
Assurance and recovery Test flow, package, operating-temperature range, error correction, configuration scrubbing, redundancy, reset and recovery behavior, and evidence for the implemented design. Device characterization is only one part of determining whether the complete design can tolerate faults and recover.

DS955 illustrates why conditions must travel with radiation figures: its AI Edge XQR GEO estimates use CREME96 worst-case solar-minimum orbital conditions and 100 mils of aluminum shielding. Its LEO estimates specify CREME96 AP8_MAX at 500 km and 51.6° inclination, and the table gives ±40% error bars at 90% confidence. These are AI Edge family estimates under those stated conditions—not XQRVC1902 AI Core specifications. See DS955 for that family’s assumptions.

AMD’s space portfolio page summarizes Versal XQR GEO figures for TID, SEL immunity and selected memory-upset rates. Treat those as manufacturer information, not independent validation, and consult DS946 for XQRVC1902-specific values and conditions before using a number in a design comparison.

How to compare performance for a mission

AMD describes Versal AI Core XQR as combining programmable logic and connectivity with AI/DSP acceleration and embedded processing. The Versal XQR product brief lists AI/ML and DSP engines, programmable logic, 26 Gb/s transceivers and embedded Arm processors. These describe available architectural resources, not the throughput, latency or power a specific flight design will achieve.

Compare candidates using the same workload, operating conditions and system constraints. Request comparable results and note how each was measured:

  • Workload performance: application throughput, worst-case latency and sustained performance—not peak AI/DSP counts alone.
  • Resource fit: logic and acceleration utilization, memory capacity and bandwidth, and required I/O or transceiver capability.
  • System limits: power and thermal budget, including the board or module where results describe more than a bare device.
  • Development and reliability: toolchain and software maturity, plus fault detection, mitigation and recovery for the implemented system.

A useful vendor comparison states the workload, resource use, operating conditions and measurement method for each result. Without those details, a feature list or headline performance figure cannot establish which part will perform better on a particular mission.

Compare like with like: silicon, boards and integrated systems

NASA’s Small Spacecraft Avionics survey lists a VC1902-based system alongside alternatives and their stated radiation figures and mission contexts. It can help identify system-level options, but a commercial module rating and a silicon datasheet value are different kinds of evidence.

For each candidate, label the comparison row as a bare device, board or integrated computer. Record its orbit and shielding assumptions, included mitigation, and supporting qualification or test evidence. The reviewed sources do not provide a neutral, controlled benchmark of XQRVC1902 against named competing FPGA families under a shared workload, orbit, shielding, power budget and qualification level. That evidence does not support ranking the devices as a universal winner.

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Define the mission environment. Fix the orbit, altitude, inclination, solar conditions, shielding material and thickness, and radiation model.
  2. Use the correct device references. Start with AMD DS946 revision 1.2 for XQRVC1902; do not transfer AI Edge DS955 values to the AI Core device.
  3. Align radiation evidence. Compare TID, SEL, SEU and functional-interrupt data separately, preserving each test or model condition and mitigation assumption.
  4. Align the comparison level. Compare silicon with silicon or complete systems with complete systems, and identify what each radiation or performance rating covers.
  5. Run the mission workload comparison. Request matched throughput, latency, power, memory, resource-use and operating-condition data.
  6. Assess assurance and response. Include production or qualification flow, package, temperature range, error correction, scrubbing, redundancy and recovery behavior in the design-level assessment.
