AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 launch on June 2, 2024, introduced its Strix Point mobile platform with two processors: the 12-core Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and 10-core Ryzen AI 9 365. Both pair Zen 5-family CPU cores, RDNA 3.5 integrated graphics and an XDNA 2 neural-processing unit rated at up to 50 peak TOPS. That number describes theoretical NPU throughput—not a guaranteed application speedup. In 2026, Strix Point can still be an excellent laptop platform when discounted, but AMD’s newer Ryzen AI 400 family must be part of any current buying comparison.

What AMD announced

AMD’s initial Ryzen AI 300 lineup consisted of two premium laptop processors. The company positioned them for elite thin-and-light, creator and gaming systems rather than as socketed desktop-style upgrade parts. They are normally soldered into complete laptops.

Processor CPU Boost clock AMD-listed cache Integrated graphics Configurable power NPU
Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 12 cores / 24 threads Up to 5.1 GHz 36 MB total Radeon 890M 15–54 W Up to 50 peak TOPS
Ryzen AI 9 365 10 cores / 20 threads Up to 5.0 GHz 34 MB total Radeon 880M 15–54 W Up to 50 peak TOPS

These launch specifications come from AMD’s announcement: AMD’s June 2024 release. The HX 370’s “HX” branding does not make it a conventional 55 W-class gaming CPU. AMD lists a 28 W default TDP and allows laptop makers to configure the chip anywhere from 15 to 54 W. Cooling, firmware and the selected power profile therefore matter as much as the processor name.

Why the HX 370 combines Zen 5 and Zen 5c

The Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 contains four full Zen 5 cores and eight denser Zen 5c cores on a single 4 nm die. Simultaneous multithreading produces 12 cores and 24 threads. Zen 5c is a denser implementation of the Zen 5 design, not a wholly separate low-power architecture. Its maximum clock is lower: AMD lists up to 3.3 GHz for the Zen 5c cores, while the processor’s headline boost is up to 5.1 GHz.

This arrangement gives a thin laptop more parallel CPU capacity within a constrained power and cooling budget. Lightly threaded work can favor the four higher-clocked Zen 5 cores; compiling, rendering and other scalable workloads can use all 12 cores. The headline boost should never be interpreted as a clock that all cores sustain simultaneously.

The HX 370 uses a TSMC 4 nm FinFET process, has a 2 GHz base clock, 12 MB of L2 cache and 24 MB of L3 cache, and uses the FP8 package. AMD’s detailed specifications are available on its product page. Bringing this mixed design under the Ryzen 9 name was a notable change from the eight-core Zen 4 Ryzen 9 7940HS and reflects AMD’s “elite ultrathin” positioning.

What “up to 50 peak TOPS” means

The XDNA 2 NPU is a dedicated accelerator for supported AI inference. AMD rates it at up to 50 peak TOPS (trillion operations per second), enough to clear Microsoft’s 40-TOPS hardware threshold for Copilot+ PCs on paper. AMD explains its terminology and comparison footnotes here: Ryzen AI 300 technical notes.

AMD Ryzen™ 9 9950X 16-Core, 32-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor
  • The best for creators meets the best for gamers, can deliver ultra-fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
  • 16 Cores and 32 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
  • 5.7 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 80 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support

TOPS is a throughput specification, not a universal benchmark. Actual results depend on arithmetic precision, model quantization, memory traffic, software kernels, drivers and whether the application targets the NPU at all. A GPU may deliver different AI throughput, and a real application may run on the CPU, GPU, NPU or a combination.

Where the NPU can help

  • Windows Studio Effects and other webcam processing.
  • Local transcription, summarization and image-generation tools that explicitly support AMD’s NPU.
  • Video and photo applications with compatible AI effects.
  • Developer frameworks targeting the Ryzen AI software stack or GPU.

Installations should be checked against AMD’s current Ryzen AI software support. Copilot+ eligibility does not mean every Windows feature, language or regional service is available, and 50 TOPS does not guarantee that an arbitrary local large language model will run efficiently. System memory, bandwidth and model format often become the limiting factors.

Radeon 890M and 880M graphics

The HX 370 carries Radeon 890M graphics and the Ryzen AI 9 365 carries Radeon 880M, both based on AMD’s RDNA 3.5 Radeon 800M design. They improve on the previous Radeon 780M generation, but integrated graphics share system memory with the CPU and NPU.

Performance varies with LPDDR5X speed, dual-channel operation, memory capacity, laptop power limits, cooling, display resolution and drivers. Radeon 890M is suitable for esports, older games and many modern titles at reduced settings, often with upscaling or frame generation. It is not a replacement for a modern discrete GPU in sustained AAA gaming, professional rendering or workloads that require dedicated VRAM.

AMD’s launch claims used selected reference systems and benchmarks. An independent AnandTech review found the HX 370 roughly 17% ahead of a Ryzen 9 7940HS in Cinebench 2024 multi-core testing, but that result belongs to the tested laptops and power settings, not every HX 370 machine: AnandTech testing.

How to read performance claims

AMD’s launch presentation made CPU, graphics, AI and efficiency comparisons using AMD Performance Labs configurations, test dates and selected competitors. Those figures are useful context, but they are not a guarantee for a retail laptop.

Later gaming comparisons with Intel Lunar Lake also require care. AMD’s vendor-provided claims used technologies including FSR upscaling, FSR frame generation, AFMF 2 and HYPR-RX. Tom’s Hardware reported that native, unupscaled results were much closer and found Intel ahead by modest percentages in some configurations: comparison context.

Any percentage comparison should identify the exact processors, laptop models, power limits, RAM, resolution, quality preset, upscaling and frame-generation settings, and whether the result is vendor-supplied or independently measured. Generated frames increase displayed frame rate but are not equivalent to the same number of natively rendered frames.

The laptop matters more than the badge

  • Power and thermals: Two HX 370 laptops can run at very different sustained clocks because the permitted envelope is 15–54 W. Thin systems may deliver fast bursts and then throttle during long renders or builds.
  • Memory: Fast dual-channel LPDDR5X helps both the iGPU and local AI. Check capacity carefully because memory is often soldered and cannot be expanded.
  • Display and battery: OLED panels, high refresh rates, large batteries and OEM power modes can dominate battery life; the processor name alone cannot predict it.
  • Graphics configuration: A discrete GPU changes gaming, rendering, weight, noise and battery behavior, even when the same Ryzen processor is installed.
  • Serviceability: The Framework Laptop 13.5 demonstrates an HX 370 configuration in a repair-oriented design, although its results remain system-dependent: Notebookcheck review.

Which laptops used Strix Point?

At launch, AMD identified ASUS Zenbook S 16 and Vivobook S systems, ProArt notebooks, ROG Zephyrus G16 and TUF Gaming models, alongside systems from Acer, HP, Lenovo and MSI. ASUS’s ProArt directory includes PX13 configurations with an HX 370 and, in some versions, up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU: ASUS ProArt directory. Exact specifications, stock and pricing vary by country and configuration.

Should you buy Ryzen AI 300 in 2026?

Choose it when

  • The complete laptop is substantially discounted against newer systems.
  • You want strong x86 CPU performance and better integrated graphics than a Ryzen 7040/8040 laptop.
  • The machine has adequate RAM, fast memory, effective cooling and a display you actually want.
  • You need Windows compatibility and local AI hardware, but your applications explicitly support the NPU.
  • Repairability or modularity is important and the specific model provides it.

Prefer Ryzen AI 400 when

Prices are close, you are buying new for long-term ownership, or the newer system offers better battery life, memory bandwidth, graphics or software support. AMD identifies Ryzen AI 400 as the next mobile generation launched in January 2026: AMD filing.

Choose another platform when

  • A discrete-GPU Windows laptop is needed for demanding games, CUDA, professional rendering or dedicated VRAM.
  • Apple silicon or Snapdragon provides the battery life and acoustics you want, and your applications, drivers and peripherals work natively or through acceptable translation.
  • You cannot accept the absence of a CPU upgrade path or soldered memory in the chosen configuration.

Do not buy a Strix Point laptop solely because its box says “50 TOPS.” Judge the exact machine’s price, memory, cooling, screen, battery, ports, warranty and graphics configuration, then compare it with Ryzen AI 400 and competing systems.
