AMD Ross is an agentic AI assistant for embedded design workflows, built to connect natural-language requests with AMD documentation, supported tools, and reusable skills. AMD says it supports all Vivado versions and Vitis HLS 2025.2 and later. It requires a compatible AI client and language model, and the AMD tools being used must be installed and licensed. AMD updates Ross monthly, independently of Vivado and Vitis releases.
What is AMD Ross?
Ross is AMD’s assistant for working with embedded design tools through natural-language prompts. AMD describes use cases such as interpreting error messages, debugging hardware designs, and analyzing designs for performance and power. It can search AMD documentation and, where configured, interact with supported tools and run workflows. These are intended capabilities described by AMD, not independently measured results.

AMD organizes Ross around four components:
- MCP servers connect the assistant to supported AMD embedded tools.
- AMD knowledge retrieval searches supported public documentation using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). AMD describes cloud access and local deployment options for supported environments.
- Agent skills provide structured instructions for particular design, optimization, or debugging tasks.
- Examples demonstrate how skills can be applied.
The workflow can start with questions about AMD documentation, then move to live tool sessions—for example, opening projects, inspecting utilization, or reading reports—and use skills to guide analysis. AMD presents Ross as something that can fit into existing IDE or command-line workflows, rather than as a replacement for the underlying tools.
Which AMD tools and versions does Ross support?
AMD’s product FAQ, checked on October 3, 2026, states the following compatibility:

| Tool | AMD-stated support |
|---|---|
| Vivado | All versions |
| Vitis HLS | Version 2025.2 and later |
These are AMD’s stated support claims, not a guarantee that every Ross feature works identically with every installation. Check AMD’s Ross product page and the documentation for the relevant release before configuring a specific tool version.
What are Ross skills, and what does “20-plus” mean?
A skill is a reusable set of instructions that guides an AI agent through a task. AMD says a SKILL.md file can lay out steps, explain how to interpret results, and suggest fixes for an FPGA task. Skills are designed to be shareable and follow the open Agent Skills standard. AMD identifies .claude/skills/ as a workspace location in its FAQ, and says users can extend existing skills or write their own.

The “20-plus” figure in the article topic should not be read as an independently verified current inventory: AMD’s product and downloads pages do not establish that count. AMD links to a skills repository, where the available collection may change.

AMD’s documented setup depends on the client and workflow. In general, users need the applicable AMD tools installed and licensed, a compatible IDE or CLI, and access to a preferred language model. AMD names VS Code, Cursor, Devin, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, and Codex CLI as examples; actual compatibility depends on the client’s ability to work with the MCP servers. The MCP server executables are downloaded after signing in with AMD credentials.

VS Code extension route
AMD describes a VS Code .vsix extension as a simplified setup that includes access to the Vivado MCP server and the RAG-enabled AMD knowledge base. This is the most direct documented route for users who want those components in VS Code.
Air-gapped knowledge access
For an air-gapped environment, AMD describes deploying a documentation database with an embedding model and MCP server, then using an answer-generation model that fits local hardware and network policy. This route requires planning for local compute and a compliant model; it is not simply the online setup with connectivity switched off.

HLS skills from the command line
HLS skills do not necessarily use an MCP server. AMD says they can work directly with source code and HLS project files through standard command-line tools, including v++ and vitis-run. The connection requirements therefore depend on whether the task needs live Vivado interaction or is an HLS skill workflow.

What is the current Ross release?
AMD says Ross follows a monthly release cadence separate from the usual Vivado and Vitis tool releases. On the downloads page checked October 3, 2026, the listed version was 2026.9.1 for the Vivado AI VS Code extension and Windows and Linux Vivado MCP server executables. AMD marked those files as last updated September 29, 2026. This is the listing observed on that date, not a guarantee it remains the latest version.

The same page listed local knowledge-base archives updated September 29, 2026: a Qwen3 embedding bundle at 4.14 GB and a Gemma embedding bundle at 2.94 GB. These are download sizes, not measures of answer quality or speed. Check the AMD Ross page for current downloads and release details before installing.
Does Ross cost extra, and what licenses are needed?
AMD says the Ross workflow requires no additional Ross license. You still need the applicable licenses for the AMD tools you use. Ross should not be confused with a license for Vivado or Vitis itself.
How reliable are Ross’s recommendations?
AMD cautions: “AI workflows are non-deterministic — results may vary between runs, models, and prompt phrasing.” Treat generated explanations, suggestions, and actions as assistance to review against the design, tool output, and engineering requirements—not as a substitute for validating a result.
