For most Windows 11 PCs, an “AMD monitor driver” search means the AMD Radeon graphics driver—the software for the graphics adapter that sends video to the display. To find the right download, check the device under Device Manager → Display adapters, then use AMD’s support page or Auto-Detect tool. If you mean a driver for the monitor itself, use the monitor manufacturer’s support page and search by its make and model instead.
First, identify which device needs a driver
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and note the AMD graphics card or processor model listed. That is the hardware whose graphics driver you may need. Microsoft distinguishes the display adapter driver from problems connecting an external monitor: troubleshoot external monitor connections.
- If you are looking for a monitor-specific device driver or support file, note the monitor’s brand and model and search for those details on the manufacturer’s official support site. There is no universal AMD driver for every monitor.
Download the AMD graphics driver
Option 1: Let AMD identify compatible hardware
Visit AMD Drivers and Support and choose its Auto-Detect and Install tool. AMD says the utility checks for compatible Radeon graphics, Ryzen chipsets, and the Windows version, then offers compatible drivers. AMD lists it for Windows 11 version 21H2 and later; see AMD’s Auto-Detect tool guidance for current details.

Follow the utility’s prompts and select the compatible driver package it offers. Package names and versions change, so use the current AMD page rather than relying on an old download or version number.

Option 2: Select the product yourself
If you know the exact AMD GPU or processor model, use AMD’s support page to browse to that product and choose the Windows 11 driver offered for it. If you have a prebuilt PC or laptop, also check the computer maker’s support page: its validated package may be the appropriate choice for that system.

Use Windows Update or Device Manager instead
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the primary automatic route for driver updates. It delivers recommended drivers and may offer additional drivers as optional updates. Open Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates and check whether a driver update is listed. See Microsoft’s guidance on recommended and updated hardware drivers.
You can also use Device Manager to search for a driver or install one you already downloaded from the hardware manufacturer. In Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the AMD adapter, and choose Update driver. To install a downloaded package, choose the option to browse your computer for drivers and point Windows to the appropriate downloaded files. Check whether Windows is using a generic display driver
If Microsoft Basic Display Adapter appears under Display adapters, Windows is using its generic display driver rather than a manufacturer-specific adapter driver. Microsoft describes it as a driver built into Windows that provides basic display and graphics capabilities. When one is available for your hardware, Microsoft recommends using the manufacturer-specific driver. See Microsoft Basic Display Adapter in Windows.

When flickering begins after Windows Update, Microsoft advises considering a rollback of the display driver. If the timing does not point to a recent update, its troubleshooting guidance also covers updating or reinstalling the adapter driver. The right step depends on the symptom and hardware; use Microsoft’s screen-flickering troubleshooting steps rather than assuming every display issue has the same cause.
