AMD FSR Upscaling (Formerly FSR 4) vs. DLSS and XeSS on Handheld Gaming PCs

There is no universal winner—and no guarantee that all three upscalers are available on a handheld. Whether you can use AMD FSR Upscaling (formerly FSR 4), NVIDIA DLSS, or Intel XeSS depends on the handheld’s exact graphics hardware, the game’s implementation, and the feature version supported by its drivers. Check those three things before comparing image quality. AMD’s current compatibility information does not establish which shipping handheld models support its ML-based FSR Upscaling, and the official information reviewed does not provide a complete current DLSS- or XeSS-capable handheld list.

What “better” means on a handheld

Upscalers render a game at a lower internal resolution and reconstruct an image for the display resolution. The intended benefit is to reduce the GPU work required for a given output resolution, potentially improving performance or leaving more GPU capacity for image quality. Results depend on the game, output and render resolutions, implementation, hardware, and settings. A technology name on a chip’s product page does not by itself mean a particular game exposes it.

For handheld owners, the useful comparison is therefore two questions, in order: Can this exact device run this feature in this game? Then, does it look or perform better in the conditions I care about? A desktop GPU’s support statement cannot establish the status of a handheld APU, and a vendor’s total for supported games and apps is not the same as a measured handheld game count.

FSR, DLSS, and XeSS are also families of features, not one-for-one switches. Upscaling and frame generation address different parts of the experience. A game may support one feature but not another, or expose different versions depending on hardware and software. Compare the specific feature in the game’s settings rather than treating the acronym as a complete compatibility or quality specification.

Compatibility: what the official information establishes

The table separates the published hardware guidance from what remains unresolved for handheld buyers. “Not established” means the cited information does not verify a handheld SKU; it does not prove that no such device or configuration exists.

Technology Published hardware guidance What that means for handhelds Game requirement
AMD FSR Upscaling (formerly FSR 4) AMD lists ML-based FSR Upscaling for Radeon RX 9000 Series and above, and “Upscaling Only” compatibility on RX 7000 Series and above. AMD says RX 6000 support is planned for 2027. These are AMD’s current graphics support statements; they do not establish equivalent support for handheld integrated APUs. AMD FSR Technologies AMD’s handheld overview discusses FSR generally, but does not confirm FSR Upscaling support on every listed handheld. Verify the precise APU, model, OEM driver, and game. AMD Handhelds AMD’s release notes described a driver upgrade path for supported games with built-in FSR 3.1 support, but this historical desktop-driver information is not proof of current handheld support. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 25.6.1 Release Notes
NVIDIA DLSS The cited NVIDIA DLSS 4 material is focused on GeForce RTX hardware. The official information reviewed here does not establish a current DLSS-capable handheld SKU. NVIDIA’s January 2026 announcement Do not infer that a handheld supports DLSS merely because a game offers DLSS on PC or because a device has a discrete graphics chip. Check the exact handheld hardware and its vendor’s specifications. The game must expose the relevant DLSS feature for the hardware and configuration. A games-and-apps total is not proof of support on a given handheld.
Intel XeSS Intel documents XeSS 3 on Arc and compatible cross-vendor devices. For the cross-vendor category shown, Intel recommends NVIDIA 3000 series and higher and AMD 6000 series and higher. That guidance does not make every XeSS feature or performance path equivalent across hardware. Intel Xe Super Sampling 3 for Developers Intel markets Arc G-Series processors for handheld gaming and describes XeSS 3 as relevant to handhelds, but a complete, current list of handheld SKUs and feature support is not established here. Intel Arc G-Series Processors for Handheld Gaming Developers must integrate XeSS into a title; Intel directs users to title-level support information. FSR 4 is now called FSR Upscaling

AMD’s current technology page uses the name FSR Upscaling for the feature formerly called FSR 4. It sits within the broader FSR “Redstone” suite, which also includes FSR Frame Generation, FSR Ray Regeneration, and FSR Radiance Caching. Those are distinct functions; support for one should not be read as support for all the others.

AMD’s current support matrix distinguishes ML-based FSR Upscaling hardware requirements from the broader presence of FSR features. It lists Radeon RX 9000 Series and above for ML-based FSR Upscaling, and marks RX 7000 Series and above as having “Upscaling Only” compatibility. The same page says RX 6000 support is planned for 2027. These are AMD’s published graphics-family statements, not a model-by-model list of handheld APUs. In particular, a handheld’s AMD branding—or a similar family name—does not establish that it meets the requirements for the ML-based feature.

There is historical context, but it should not be mistaken for a current handheld compatibility table. AMD’s Adrenalin 25.6.1 notes described FSR 4 as exclusive to Radeon RX 9070 Series at that release and discussed upgrading supported games with built-in FSR 3.1 support. A later optional 25.6.3 release note updated the supported-game list. These release notes describe their respective software releases; they do not establish that a device-specific handheld driver offers the same toggle or support. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 25.6.3 Optional Update Release Notes

AMD’s handheld page says FSR technologies can help in supported games, but does not identify FSR Upscaling as available on every handheld it lists. The distinction matters because handheld manufacturers may supply device-specific drivers and support. A statement about a desktop Radeon card or a general handheld feature is not a substitute for confirmation from the handheld maker and the game.

DLSS and XeSS: different kinds of compatibility evidence

DLSS is an RTX- and game-specific question

The cited NVIDIA material presents DLSS 4 for GeForce RTX users and reports that more than 250 games and apps supported DLSS 4 in NVIDIA’s January 2026 announcement. That is a vendor-reported adoption figure for games and apps, not an independently verified count of games playable on handhelds, and not a quality comparison against FSR or XeSS. It cannot tell you whether a particular handheld has eligible hardware or whether a particular game enables DLSS on it.

For a handheld purchase or setup decision, look for the model’s exact GPU specification and an explicit DLSS statement from the device vendor. Then check the game’s own supported features. The sources cited here do not settle which current handheld products meet those conditions, so a general claim that a handheld category “has DLSS” would go beyond the available evidence.

XeSS spans Arc and compatible cross-vendor hardware

Intel’s XeSS 3 developer information covers Arc hardware as well as a cross-vendor category of compatible devices. Its guidance for that category recommends NVIDIA 3000 series and higher and AMD 6000 series and higher. Read that as Intel’s compatibility guidance for the stated category, not as a guarantee that every XeSS 3 function behaves identically or is available on every device meeting a broad GPU-family description.

Intel describes its Arc G-Series processors as purpose-built for gaming handhelds and calls XeSS 3 an AI-based technology for handheld gaming. That establishes Intel’s intended handheld use case; it does not by itself certify every handheld SKU, game, driver, or feature combination. Intel’s support article directs players to check title-level support because developers must integrate XeSS.

How to check a handheld and game before relying on an upscaler

Use this sequence for a device you already own or one you are considering. Record the exact model rather than relying on the chip maker’s name or a family-level product description.

  1. Identify the complete handheld model and graphics hardware. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact SKU and its integrated GPU or APU. If there are regional or memory configurations, confirm that the listing matches the device in question. A desktop GPU family support statement does not automatically cover an integrated handheld part.
  2. Check the handheld maker’s current driver and support notes. Use the driver supplied or recommended for that model, and look for explicit support for the feature/version. Desktop driver release notes may describe capabilities that are not included in a handheld’s OEM package. Avoid assuming that installing a generic desktop driver is supported.
  3. Check the exact game and feature version. Look at the game’s official support information and graphics settings. Confirm whether it offers FSR Upscaling/FSR 4, DLSS, or XeSS, and note which version and options are actually selectable. Intel’s support guidance specifically directs users to title-level support; developer integration is necessary.
  4. Separate upscaling from frame generation. If the game exposes both, check them as separate options. FSR Redstone itself separates FSR Upscaling and FSR Frame Generation. Do not assume that selecting an upscaler enables frame generation or that a frame-generation option has the same hardware requirements.
  5. Test on the power mode you intend to use. Handheld performance and battery life depend on the device’s resolution, power/TDP mode, driver source, and OEM support. Compare options at the same in-game scene, output resolution, power mode, and other graphics settings; otherwise, the difference cannot be attributed confidently to the upscaler.
  6. Confirm the result in the game. Apply one option at a time and check that the setting remains enabled after restarting if the game requires it. If a mode is missing, do not treat a similar-looking option or a vendor feature page as proof that it is active.

How to compare image quality and performance fairly

There is no comparable handheld benchmark in the official information cited here that tests FSR Upscaling, DLSS, and XeSS on the same hardware and game. The evidence therefore supports a compatibility comparison, not a universal image-quality ranking or a claim that one option gains a specific number of frames per second.

When you can test the options in one game, hold the important conditions constant: same handheld, game build, scene, display/output resolution, power mode, and other graphics settings. Compare the same named quality mode where the game offers comparable modes, while remembering that labels such as Quality or Performance do not guarantee identical internal resolutions or reconstruction behavior across different implementations.

  • Image stability: watch moving edges, fine patterns, foliage, wires, and distant detail for shimmer, flicker, or breakup.
  • Detail retention: inspect text, thin geometry, and textures at the handheld’s normal viewing distance, not only in a magnified screenshot.
  • Performance consistency: observe frame pacing and demanding scenes as well as a simple average. A higher displayed frame rate is not automatically a smoother-feeling result.
  • Power and temperature: compare using the same power profile. A result obtained at a higher wattage may not suit a battery-focused session.
  • Personal priorities: the best setting may be the one that preserves the image you value at a stable frame rate, rather than the one with the most aggressive performance mode.

These are practical comparison criteria, not results from a lab test. The official vendor figures in this article do not provide a matched handheld image-quality or performance measurement.

Frame generation is a separate trade-off

Frame generation creates additional displayed frames; upscaling reconstructs an image from a lower-resolution render. A game may implement either, both, or neither for a given device and feature version. Do not compare a frame-generation mode’s displayed frame rate directly with a native or upscaled render rate and call the difference a pure rendering-performance gain.

For a handheld, assess whether the game and hardware support frame generation, how responsive controls feel, and whether the generated frames introduce visible artifacts in the scenes you play. The sources cited here do not provide matched handheld measurements for latency, artifacts, battery use, or frame-generation performance across the three families. Those outcomes must not be assumed from the feature name alone.

Common compatibility mistakes and what to do instead

  • “The chip is AMD, so it supports FSR 4.” AMD’s current support matrix names graphics families, but the handheld page does not confirm FSR Upscaling for every listed device. Verify the exact APU and the handheld vendor’s driver information.
  • “The game has FSR, so it has FSR Upscaling.” A game can support an earlier FSR version without exposing the current ML-based feature. Check the game’s exact option and its stated version; AMD’s historical FSR 3.1 upgrade notes do not prove handheld availability.
  • “XeSS works everywhere because Intel lists cross-vendor devices.” Intel’s page specifies compatible hardware and recommendations, while game developers still have to integrate the feature. Confirm both the device and title.
  • “DLSS is listed for this game, so my handheld can use it.” The cited DLSS information is RTX-focused and does not provide a current handheld SKU list. Confirm hardware eligibility on the exact model and then verify the game’s implementation.
  • “A missing option means the feature is broken.” It may instead reflect unsupported hardware, an OEM driver, a game build, or a title-specific implementation. Check the device maker’s current support notes and the game’s own requirements before changing drivers.
  • “More frames always means a better handheld experience.” Upscaling and frame generation affect different parts of the image and presentation. Evaluate image stability, responsiveness, and power behavior under the same conditions you actually use.

Which one should you choose?

Choose by confirmed compatibility first, then by how the game looks and feels on your own device. If only one option is exposed and supported for the exact hardware/game combination, that is the practical choice. If several are available, compare them under matched settings rather than assuming that a vendor name or an adoption count predicts quality.

AMD’s handheld overview promotes FSR in supported games; Intel explicitly positions XeSS 3 for handheld gaming; NVIDIA’s cited DLSS 4 announcement gives an RTX-focused games-and-apps adoption figure. These statements answer different questions and are not an apples-to-apples comparison. None establishes a universal best upscaler for handhelds, and the official sources cited here do not settle a complete, current model-by-model support list across all three technologies.
