Short answer: FSR 4 and DLSS are not currently interchangeable settings on most handheld gaming PCs. AMD’s public documentation describes FSR 4 machine-learning upscaling for Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards, while the cited handheld example, the ASUS ROG Ally with a Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU, is not listed as officially supported. NVIDIA DLSS belongs to the GeForce RTX ecosystem and is not a native option on that AMD-based device. AMD has reportedly said it plans to bring FSR 4 to APUs, laptops and handhelds by the end of 2026, but that is a roadmap statement rather than confirmation for a particular model.

What FSR 4 and DLSS actually do

Both technologies render a game internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct an image for the display. That can reduce the work required from the GPU, which is especially valuable on handheld PCs where the processor, cooling system and battery are limited. The similarity ends there: each technology depends on different hardware, software, game integration and driver support.

AMD FSR 4

FSR 4 is AMD’s machine-learning-based upscaling generation. AMD’s current public FSR technology page describes this ML upscaling as available on Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards. The same page says support for Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards is planned for 2027. Its published compatibility wording refers to GPU series, not to the integrated graphics in handheld APUs.

That distinction matters. A handheld can use an AMD Radeon GPU architecture without automatically receiving every feature documented for AMD’s discrete graphics cards. The game, driver package, operating system and device firmware all have to expose the feature. Architecture alone is not confirmation of FSR 4 support.

NVIDIA DLSS

DLSS is part of NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX feature ecosystem. A supported game normally exposes DLSS through its own graphics settings after detecting compatible RTX hardware and drivers. The technology’s availability therefore depends on both an RTX GPU and a game implementation; it is not a universal Windows upscaler that any handheld can select.

The NVIDIA material cited for this comparison discusses DLSS 4 and 4.5 features and supported RTX games and applications. It does not establish that DLSS is available as a native in-game option on an AMD-powered handheld.

Current compatibility: what is confirmed and what is not

As of October 13, 2026, the evidence supports a careful compatibility statement rather than a winner claim. AMD’s public page documents RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics-card support for ML upscaling and lists RX 6000 support as planned for 2027. It does not list handheld APUs as currently supported. A Windows Central report dated October 8, 2026 quotes AMD Senior Vice President and General Manager of Computing and Graphics Jack Huynh saying the company intends to expand FSR 4 to APUs, gaming laptops and handheld devices by the end of 2026. That is a reported intention, not a device-by-device support matrix.

Question What the available evidence establishes What it does not establish
Does AMD document FSR 4 ML upscaling? Compatibility is described for Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards; RX 6000 support is planned for 2027. It does not document current support for every Radeon integrated GPU or handheld APU.
Is FSR 4 officially available on the ASUS ROG Ally? The cited ROG Ally page identifies an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme configuration with Radeon RDNA 3 graphics. The page does not confirm FSR 4 support for that handheld.
Will FSR 4 reach handhelds? Jack Huynh was reported as saying AMD plans to extend FSR 4 to APUs, laptops and handhelds by the end of 2026. The statement does not identify models, drivers, operating systems or a release date for any specific device.
Can an AMD handheld use native DLSS? DLSS is documented as part of the GeForce RTX ecosystem. The reviewed material does not show DLSS as a native feature on the AMD-based ROG Ally or other AMD handhelds.

Does FSR 4 work on the ROG Ally?

There is no confirmed answer of “yes” for the cited ROG Ally configuration. ASUS describes a 2023 ROG Ally test setup using an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, Radeon RDNA 3 graphics, 16 GB of RAM and a 1,920 × 1,080, 120 Hz display. Those specifications explain the hardware context, but they do not prove that the handheld can select FSR 4.

Check the distinction between hardware identity and software availability whenever a game menu displays an upscaler. A game may offer an older FSR mode that works through a shader or spatial/temporal technique while not offering FSR 4’s ML path. Conversely, an announcement about future APU support may precede an actual driver and game update. The reliable confirmation would be an AMD support document or a device software release that names the model and feature.

DLSS is a different case on the ROG Ally. Its Ryzen Z1 Extreme and Radeon graphics are AMD hardware, while DLSS targets NVIDIA GeForce RTX hardware. The reviewed sources do not show a supported, native DLSS selection for this device. Do not treat the two technologies as alternative switches on the same Ally installation.

What about Steam Deck and other handheld PCs?

The public AMD compatibility wording reviewed here does not establish current FSR 4 support for Steam Deck or any other named handheld APU. AMD’s partner page identifies handheld partners including Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, MSI and Valve, but being listed as a partner is not the same as having FSR 4 enabled on a product.

Steam Deck, Legion Go, ROG Ally and similar systems can differ in APU generation, operating system, graphics driver and vendor control software. A feature that appears on one Windows handheld does not automatically transfer to another Windows model, and Windows support would not by itself prove availability in a Linux-based environment. Until AMD publishes model-specific support and the device maker ships the required software, describe handheld FSR 4 as unconfirmed rather than available.

Why a desktop benchmark cannot answer the handheld question

No controlled handheld-specific test in the reviewed material compares FSR 4 with DLSS for image quality, frame rate, latency, power draw or battery life. Desktop results cannot be reused as a handheld verdict because handhelds run at different power limits, thermal conditions, display resolutions and driver versions.

A meaningful comparison would require the following controls:

  • The same handheld model or two systems with clearly documented hardware differences.
  • The exact game build, operating system, graphics driver and vendor control-panel version.
  • The same output resolution, internal render resolution and upscaling quality preset.
  • The same power limit, performance profile, fan behavior and plugged-in or battery state.
  • Frame generation either enabled on both systems or disabled on both; base rendering must be reported separately.
  • The same measurement method for average frame rate, frame-time consistency, latency and power consumption.

Without those controls, a higher frame rate may come from a different power mode or render resolution rather than from FSR 4 or DLSS itself.

How to compare image quality correctly

Upscaling quality should be assessed at the handheld’s actual display output, not from a compressed video or a desktop screenshot viewed at another size. Record the input resolution and output resolution for every run. Then inspect the same camera paths and motion sequences in both modes.

Fine detail and texture reconstruction

Look at thin geometry such as fences, wires, foliage and distant signs. Note whether detail is retained, blurred or reconstructed inconsistently. A quality preset with a lower internal resolution can increase frame rate while making small objects less stable.

Temporal stability

Pan the camera slowly and quickly. Watch for shimmering, crawling pixels and detail that changes from frame to frame. Handheld screens are close to the player’s eyes, so unstable foliage or railings can be more distracting than a modest loss of static sharpness.

Ghosting and motion clarity

Track characters, vehicles and bright objects against dark backgrounds. Record trailing images and smearing separately from ordinary motion blur. A mode can look sharp in a still frame yet leave visible trails during movement.

UI and text

Menus, subtitles and HUD elements should normally be rendered at the display resolution or through the game’s own interface path. Check small text for softness, double edges and flicker. Do not judge an upscaler only from a cinematic scene.

Frame rate, frame generation and latency are different measurements

Upscaling can improve the game’s base rendering rate by reducing the number of pixels the GPU must shade. Frame generation is a separate process that creates additional displayed frames from rendered frames. A counter that reports more frames after generation does not mean the controls respond as quickly as they would at the same base frame rate without generation.

  • Displayed frame rate: the result after any frame-generation feature.
  • Latency and frame pacing: input-to-display delay and the consistency of frame times.

Frame generation can also increase workload and power use. On a power-limited APU, the extra processing may reduce the base rate or shorten battery runtime even while the displayed-frame counter rises. That trade-off must be measured rather than assumed.

Power, thermals and battery life on a handheld

Handheld performance is constrained by the selected wattage, cooling capacity and battery state. A comparison that runs one technology at 30 W and the other at 15 W is not a technology comparison. Record the device’s configured power limit and whether the charger is connected.

Measure power and performance over a repeatable segment long enough for clocks and temperatures to stabilize. Report average power, temperature, fan behavior, base frame rate and frame-time variance together. Battery runtime should be treated as a separate result because capacity, screen brightness, refresh rate and background software can materially change it.

The 120 Hz display cited for the ROG Ally test configuration does not require a game to render at 120 frames per second. If a title runs at 30 or 40 fps, evaluate frame pacing and consistency instead of treating the panel’s maximum refresh rate as a target that upscaling must reach.

How game support changes the decision

Feature names are not interchangeable across games. One title may implement an FSR option while another offers DLSS, and a third may support neither. Even when both names appear, versions and available quality modes can differ.

Before comparing, open the game’s graphics menu and record the exact labels. Confirm whether the option is native to the game, supplied through an official driver or operating-system feature, or dependent on an unofficial modification. The reviewed sources do not verify unofficial injection methods, their stability, anti-cheat consequences or current support, so they should not be treated as a dependable recommendation.

Also check whether an update changed the game’s implementation. A patch can alter presets, motion vectors, sharpening or frame-generation behavior, making an older test no longer representative.

A practical verification checklist for buyers

  1. Identify the exact handheld model, APU, operating system and current graphics-driver version.
  2. Read the device maker’s release notes and AMD’s current compatibility information; do not infer support from the presence of Radeon graphics alone.
  3. Install the game’s latest supported build and open its native graphics settings.
  4. Look for a clearly named FSR 4 option rather than assuming that an older FSR entry means FSR 4.
  5. For DLSS, verify that the system contains supported GeForce RTX hardware; an AMD Radeon handheld should not be expected to expose native DLSS.
  6. Test at the device’s intended output resolution, then note the internal resolution and quality preset shown by the game.
  7. Run the same scene with frame generation off first, then test it separately if the game and hardware officially support it.
  8. Record frame rate, frame pacing, latency, power and temperature before drawing a conclusion.

What AMD’s 2026 handheld plan means

Jack Huynh was quoted by Windows Central on October 8, 2026 as saying: “We will expand the machine learning and AI-based FSR 4 technology, which was preemptively introduced in existing external graphics cards, to the entire product lineup by the end of this year, including APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld devices.” The quotation is a translated, reported statement from an AMD executive.

That announcement is important because it addresses the exact category missing from AMD’s published RX-series wording. It still leaves several practical questions unanswered: which APU generations qualify, which operating systems receive support, what driver or software release is required, and whether vendors must update their own control software. Until those details are published, the correct wording is “planned” or “reported,” not “available on every handheld.”

Which technology should a handheld owner choose?

If your handheld is AMD-based today

Choose the upscaler that the specific game officially supports on that device. Existing FSR modes may be useful even when FSR 4 is not documented. Do not expect DLSS to appear simply because a game supports it on desktop RTX hardware.

If you are waiting for FSR 4

Watch for an AMD support entry and a handheld vendor driver or firmware release that names your model. A general statement about APUs and handhelds is not enough to establish availability on the ROG Ally, Steam Deck, Legion Go or another individual system.

If native DLSS is essential

Start with the GPU requirement, not the handheld brand. Native DLSS requires supported GeForce RTX hardware and a compatible game implementation. An AMD APU handheld is therefore not a substitute for an RTX-based system when DLSS is a decisive requirement.

If battery life and responsiveness matter most

Prioritize a stable base frame rate, consistent frame pacing and measured latency. Treat generated frames as a separate visual-smoothness feature, not as an equivalent replacement for faster input response.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The bottom line on FSR 4 versus DLSS for handhelds

There is no evidence in the reviewed material for a universal handheld winner. FSR 4 is currently documented on specific Radeon RX graphics-card families, while handheld APU support remains unconfirmed in AMD’s public compatibility wording. AMD has reportedly promised expansion to handhelds by the end of 2026, but implementation details are still pending. DLSS remains tied to compatible GeForce RTX hardware and cannot be treated as a native option on the AMD-powered ROG Ally example.

For a purchase or upgrade decision, verify the exact model, driver and game support first. For a performance claim, compare matched settings and report image quality, base rendering, generated frames, latency, power and game support separately. Until a controlled handheld test and an official device support matrix exist, any broader claim that FSR 4 or DLSS is “better” on handheld PCs goes beyond the available evidence.
