AMD positions FSR 4 as a substantial image-quality improvement over FSR 3.1, with better temporal stability, finer detail, particle preservation and less moving-object ghosting. Those advantages do not make FSR 4 universally available, however: the supported GPU architecture, operating system, graphics API and game integration all matter.
There is no reliable universal winner for every handheld and game. Native rendering can look cleanest in a still image, while a well-integrated upscaler can look steadier during motion and leave enough GPU headroom for a stable frame rate. Compare the same moving scene at the same output resolution and power limit rather than judging a paused screenshot.

What the three choices actually do
Native resolution
Native resolution renders the game at the panel or selected output resolution. At 1280×800, for example, the game shades that full output image instead of reconstructing it from a smaller internal image. You avoid upscaling reconstruction, but the GPU does the most work. Native is the correct baseline when it already delivers the frame rate and frame-time consistency you want.

FSR 3
FSR 3 is AMD’s analytical temporal upscaler. Its menu can expose Native AA, Quality, Balanced, Performance and, in some games, Ultra Performance. Quality, Balanced, Performance and Ultra Performance render below the output resolution and reconstruct the final image. Native AA is different: it keeps 100% input resolution and adds anti-aliasing, so it is not an upscaling mode.
FSR 4
FSR 4 is AMD’s machine-learning successor. AMD says it improves temporal stability, preserves fine and particle detail, and reduces ghosting on moving objects compared with FSR 3.1. In a game with official FSR 4 support, its Quality mode is the first reconstruction option to test when native performance is insufficient.
Check compatibility before comparing image quality
The original FSR 4 release lists Radeon RX 9000-series (RDNA 4) graphics, Windows 10 or Windows 11, and DirectX 12 as the supported configuration. That specification is not a blanket promise that every AMD-branded handheld can run the same path.

AMD’s current FSR Upscaling documentation says ML inference is optimized for RDNA 4 and RDNA 3 discrete GPUs. RDNA 3.5, RDNA 2 and older hardware use analytical FSR 3.1 paths; unsupported hardware can automatically select FSR 3.1.5. A handheld’s product name is therefore not enough. Check its actual GPU architecture, operating system, game API and the version of the game’s FSR integration.

- API and OS: the original support statement names Windows 10/11 and DirectX 12. Other combinations are outside that specific statement.
- Power and thermals: a mode that looks good for five minutes may lose its advantage after the handheld reaches its sustained temperature and power limit.
On hardware without the required FSR 4 path, use FSR 3 instead of assuming that an FSR 4 toggle or mod will provide the same result.
How the FSR 3 presets change the internal image
AMD GPUOpen lists these approximate input scales per dimension (2023):
| FSR 3 mode | Approximate input scale per dimension | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Quality | 67% | Highest source resolution among the standard upscaling presets; normally the first preset to try. |
| Balanced | 59% | Lower internal resolution for additional performance when Quality does not hold the target. |
| Performance | 50% | Prioritizes speed over fine source detail. |
| Ultra Performance | 33% | Starts from one-third of the output resolution per dimension; a last resort on a small display. |
These percentages are approximate input scales, not guaranteed frame-rate gains. The result depends on the game’s shading cost, CPU workload, effects, resolution, driver and frame-time target. Move down from Quality only when the extra speed is visible and stable.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFSR 3 Native AA is not “native plus upscaling”
AMD describes Native AA as a pure anti-aliasing mode: it uses a 1.0× input resolution and performs no upscaling. It can be a useful middle choice when you want anti-aliasing without lowering the internal resolution, but AMD also notes its larger performance overhead. If native rendering already misses your target, Native AA generally will not solve the performance problem; test it for image quality only when you have GPU headroom.

Which image looks best in the situations that matter?
When the handheld already reaches its target frame rate
Choose native resolution first. It gives the reconstruction stage nothing to infer and is the cleanest reference for text, geometry and fine static detail. Keep it only if frame times remain consistent in the heaviest scene you actually play. A nominally higher resolution with uneven frame delivery can feel worse than a reconstructed image at a locked target.
When native is too slow and FSR 4 is officially supported
Compare FSR 4 Quality with native and FSR 3 Quality at the same output resolution. AMD’s stated improvements make FSR 4 the expected visual winner among the reconstruction options, especially in moving foliage, thin geometry, particles and scenes with camera motion. The game’s integration and device driver still determine whether that expectation is met.
When FSR 4 is unavailable
Start with FSR 3 Quality. It retains the most source detail of the standard FSR 3 presets. If it cannot hold the target, try Balanced, then Performance. Ultra Performance should be reserved for cases where the other options cannot deliver a playable, stable frame rate, because its one-third-per-dimension input can make fine detail and distant text noticeably harder to reconstruct.

When shimmering or ghosting is the deciding defect
Do not assume native wins simply because it avoids upscaling. Temporal anti-aliasing can shimmer on its own, and an upscaler can sometimes produce a steadier image in motion. Inspect repeated patterns, fences, wires, foliage, hair, particles and specular highlights while moving the camera. Look for trails behind characters and objects, crawling edges and detail that disappears and reappears.

A fair handheld comparison procedure
Use this process to compare modes without accidentally changing several variables at once:
- Set the output: select the handheld panel’s native display mode in the game or system, and keep that output resolution unchanged for every run.
- Choose one demanding scene: use the same save, camera route and weather or effects state. A busy outdoor area usually exposes temporal artifacts better than a menu or static room.
- Match settings: keep the graphics preset, texture setting, sharpening, motion blur, field of view and ray-tracing options identical.
- Keep frame generation constant: either disable it for every comparison or enable it for every comparison. Do not attribute frame-generation changes to the upscaler.
- Match the power limit: use the same handheld wattage mode and let the device reach its normal sustained temperature before recording results.
- Record three baselines: native resolution, FSR 3 Quality and, where officially supported, FSR 4 Quality. Add Balanced or Performance only if Quality cannot meet the target.
- Watch motion, not just screenshots: pan across foliage, wires, hair, particles and distant text. Check for shimmer, ghost trails, breakup and HUD clarity.
- Separate speed from quality: record average frame rate and frame-time consistency independently from your visual observations. A higher average with severe spikes is not an equivalent result.
AMD recommends a game’s built-in FSR when available because game-specific integration can produce better results than driver-level Radeon Super Resolution (RSR). Do not stack RSR on top of in-game FSR; that adds a second scaling stage and makes the comparison invalid.

“I play at 800p and native is already locked.”
Stay native unless you have a specific artifact you prefer to address. If the title’s native anti-aliasing shimmers or leaves jagged edges, test FSR 3 Native AA, understanding that it carries a larger performance overhead. Do not switch to an upscaling preset merely because it is available.
“I miss the target by a small amount.”
Try FSR 3 Quality first, or FSR 4 Quality when the official path is available. The relatively high input scale preserves more source detail than Balanced or Performance while reducing GPU work. Recheck the worst scene after the handheld reaches sustained temperature.

“I need a large performance increase.”
Move from Quality to Balanced, then Performance, measuring frame-time stability at each step. Accept the lower internal resolution only when the gain is obvious during play, not just in an overlay. Ultra Performance is a last resort on a small handheld screen.
“The menu says FSR 4, but the device is not an RX 9000 desktop GPU.”
Verify the architecture and the runtime path. AMD’s documentation distinguishes ML-optimized RDNA 4 and RDNA 3 discrete GPUs from RDNA 3.5, RDNA 2 and older analytical paths. If the hardware is unsupported, the game may automatically select FSR 3.1.5 rather than running FSR 4 ML inference.
What “sharper than native” really means
A reconstructed image can appear subjectively sharper because temporal reconstruction and sharpening increase edge contrast. That does not mean it contains more true source detail than a native render. Native remains the reference for unconstructed pixel information, while FSR 4’s advantage is the stability and preservation AMD reports relative to FSR 3.1 at a lower internal resolution.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Judge the trade-off over time. A paused screenshot may favor native fine detail; a moving camera may favor FSR 4 if it reduces shimmer, ghosting and particle loss in that particular integration. The answer can also change with output size: the same artifacts are less conspicuous on a small handheld panel than on a large external display, but distant text and HUD elements still deserve inspection.
Limits of the available evidence
AMD’s statements establish the intended FSR 4 improvements and the documented compatibility paths. They do not provide a matched, cross-handheld benchmark covering FSR 4, FSR 3 and native resolution across multiple games. Treat FSR 4 as the best first reconstruction choice on officially supported hardware, not as a guaranteed winner in every title.
Drivers, game patches, reconstruction parameters, sharpening defaults, anti-aliasing choices and power limits can all change the result. Record the exact game version and device settings when sharing a comparison so another player can reproduce it.
