AMD EPYC 7402P Review: 24 Cores of Performance and Value — Page 2 of 3

The AMD EPYC 7402P is a 24-core, 48-thread server processor built for one-socket systems. Its eight memory channels and 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes give a single socket considerable platform capacity, but it cannot be used as a two-socket CPU. ServeTheHome’s September 2019 review found it compelling at its launch-era price; that assessment is historical, not a guide to 2026 pricing or value.

What the EPYC 7402P offers

AMD lists the EPYC 7402P as an EPYC 7002-series processor for the SP3 socket. It has 24 cores, 48 threads, a 2.8 GHz base clock, maximum boost up to 3.35 GHz, 128 MB of L3 cache and a default 180 W TDP. AMD’s specification page lists boxed part number 100-100000048WOF and tray part number 100-000000048. AMD’s EPYC 7402P specifications

Specification EPYC 7402P
Cores / threads 24 / 48 (AMD)
Base / maximum boost clock 2.8 GHz / up to 3.35 GHz (AMD)
L3 cache 128 MB (AMD)
Default TDP 180 W (AMD)
Memory Eight DDR4 channels, up to 3200 MT/s; 204.8 GB/s per socket (AMD)
Expansion 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes (AMD)
Socket support SP3; 1P only (AMD)

Why the “P” matters: this is a single-socket CPU

The 7402P is limited to one processor per system. AMD’s EPYC 7002 datasheet distinguishes it from the non-P 7402, which supports one- or two-socket configurations; the 7402P is marked 1P only. If a design needs two processors, the 7402P is not the right SKU. AMD EPYC 7002 series datasheet

For a single-socket server, the CPU’s eight-channel memory interface and 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes provide substantial room for memory capacity and peripheral connectivity without adding a second processor. Those figures describe the processor’s available resources, not a guarantee that every motherboard exposes them in the same way; board layout and configuration still matter.

Check server and motherboard compatibility before buying

Socket fit alone is not enough to establish compatibility. Before purchasing a 7402P separately, verify the exact CPU support list and required BIOS revision for the server or motherboard, along with qualified DIMM types and memory population rules. AMD notes that some second-generation EPYC features on first-generation EPYC boards may require a BIOS update, while a motherboard designed for EPYC 7002 enables the full feature set. Consult the board or system vendor’s documentation for the exact configuration.

  • Confirm the vendor explicitly supports the EPYC 7402P, not merely the SP3 socket.
  • Check the minimum BIOS version and whether the system can be updated with the CPU you plan to install.
  • Validate DIMM type, capacity, and slot population against the vendor’s qualified configuration.
  • Check chassis cooling and power requirements for the processor’s 180 W default TDP and the system as a whole.

What the 2019 review’s power readings mean

ServeTheHome tested the processor in a Supermicro AS-1014S-WTRT 1U system with two Intel DC S3710 1.2 TB SSDs, 8 × 32 GB DDR4-3200 memory, onboard Broadcom 10Gbase-T and no add-in cards in the stated setup. With performance mode and the CPU set to a 180 W TDP, the review recorded these whole-system readings:

  • EPYC product line processor for better usability and increased efficiency
  • Dodeca-core (12 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
  • 64 MB of L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
  • Processor with 3.40 GHz clock speed for reliable and fast execution of instructions to ensure maximum convenience and feasibility
Test condition in ServeTheHome’s setup Measured system power
Idle 99 W
STH 70% load point 185 W
STH 100% load point 212 W
Maximum observed 242 W

These are readings for the complete review configuration, not CPU-only consumption. Another chassis, cooling arrangement, BIOS setting, component set or workload can produce different results. The review also notes configurable cTDP from 165 W to 200 W; actual system settings and platform support should be checked before treating that range as available in a particular server. How to read the review’s value claim today

AMD and ServeTheHome cited $1,250 as the 7402P’s launch-era list price in 2019. That figure explains the original review’s value framing, but it is not a current quote and does not establish present-day used-market value. No current price, stock status or workload-matched comparison with modern alternatives is established here.

  • EPYC Processor Ensures Reliability and Maximum Productivity
  • 128 MB L3 Cache Boosts System Performance, Minimizes Interruptions
  • 24-Core Processor Core Handles Data Efficiently for Quick Information Transfer

The useful way to evaluate the 7402P now is against a specific server requirement: whether one socket is sufficient, whether the workload can use its cores and memory bandwidth, whether the board supports it, and whether the system’s expansion and power behavior suit the deployment. The 2019 review’s competitive comparisons belong to that period, not to today’s market. AMD’s launch announcement provides the historical context for its 2019 pricing.
