AMD’s August 2022 driver story combines two different releases: Adrenalin 22.8.1 added official support for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, while the following 22.8.2 release fixed a launch failure in FINAL FANTASY VIII – REMASTERED. The Final Fantasy entry was a repair, not new-game support, and AMD published no benchmark showing a guaranteed Spider-Man frame-rate increase.

What each August 2022 driver changed

Release Driver package Relevant change
Adrenalin 22.8.1 22.20.19.05; Windows Driver Store 31.0.12019.5007 Added Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Thymesia support; added Radeon Boost with Variable Rate Shading for Halo Infinite.
Adrenalin 22.8.2 22.20.19.09; Windows Driver Store 31.0.12019.9007 Added Saints Row DirectX 12 and The Bridge Curse Road to Salvation support; fixed FINAL FANTASY VIII – REMASTERED failing to launch.

AMD’s release notes describe compatibility and bug fixes, not a measured performance uplift. Spider-Man owners should therefore treat 22.8.1 as a game-support update rather than a promise of higher FPS.

Adrenalin 22.8.1: Spider-Man support

The 22.8.1 release was the one that officially added Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. Its other headline items were Thymesia support and Radeon Boost using Variable Rate Shading in Halo Infinite. AMD also documented Enhanced Sync stability work and fixes affecting display switching, Project Zomboid, LOVE2D games, Stormworks and mixed-reality headsets. See the complete 22.8.1 release notes.

Adrenalin 22.8.2: a Final Fantasy VIII launch fix

22.8.2 did not introduce support for a new Final Fantasy title. AMD placed FINAL FANTASY VIII – REMASTERED under Fixed Issues, specifically for a failure to launch. Its new support highlights were Saints Row with DirectX 12 and The Bridge Curse Road to Salvation. The release also listed fixes for VEGAS Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Lost Ark and Fortnite stutter behavior. The exact game name matters: this was Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, not an unspecified “Final Fantasy” release.

Supported Radeon hardware and Windows versions

The 22.8.x packages covered a broad range of products, including Radeon RX 6000, RX 5000, RX Vega, Radeon VII, RX 500/RX 500X and RX 400 families, selected mobile GPUs, and Ryzen and Athlon processors with integrated Radeon graphics. The 22.8.2 compatibility list includes RX 6900, 6800, 6700, 6600, 6500 and 6400 series alongside older generations; exact support depended on the product. AMD listed Windows 11 version 21H2 and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 or later, with operating-system support varying by Radeon model.

Notebook and all-in-one owners need extra caution. AMD described the generic package as a reference driver with limited system-vendor-specific support and recommended the computer maker’s driver when display switching, power modes, hotkeys or other customized features are important.

Known limitations in these releases

The release notes also recorded unresolved issues, including:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Call of Duty: Warzone stuttering on Caldera and Fortnite stutter with DirectX 11.
  • Radeon Super Resolution failing to trigger after resolution or HDR changes.
  • Oculus Quest 2 dashboard or controller wobble.
  • VEGAS Pro preset problems and DaVinci Resolve Studio crashes involving AMD encoding.
  • GPU utilization remaining at 100% in Radeon performance metrics.
  • Enhanced Sync black screens or crashes, plus some display corruption.

Those trade-offs are one reason an old package should not be installed casually on a working system.

Should you install 22.8.1 or 22.8.2 today?

For the historical August 2022 situation, 22.8.1 or later was the relevant Spider-Man baseline, and 22.8.2 or later included the Final Fantasy VIII launch fix. In 2026, both packages are obsolete. Use AMD’s current driver selector instead; a current package may already contain these changes plus later Windows, game and security fixes. Install an old version only when a specific archival troubleshooting case requires it.

Safe update procedure

  1. Identify the Radeon GPU or Ryzen processor and Windows edition.
  2. Download the matching package from AMD’s driver page, or use the system manufacturer’s package on a laptop or all-in-one.
  3. Sign in with administrator rights and run the installer.
  4. Restart Windows if requested.
  5. Launch the affected game and verify startup and display behavior.
  6. If a regression appears, reinstall the previous stable package or follow AMD’s official uninstall guidance.

If the game still will not start

  • Confirm the game is using the intended Radeon GPU rather than an integrated or low-power hybrid mode.
  • Verify the game files in its launcher and check for game updates.
  • Temporarily disable Enhanced Sync and remove overlays, mods or monitoring utilities while testing.
  • Consider shader-cache or Windows-update problems; a driver fix does not eliminate every possible crash cause.
  • On a notebook, restore the OEM graphics package if brightness, sleep/wake, display switching or vendor performance controls stop working.

Bottom line

Spider-Man support arrived in Adrenalin 22.8.1. The next release, 22.8.2, fixed Final Fantasy VIII Remastered failing to launch. They were consecutive August 2022 updates, not one driver adding support for both games, and neither release note establishes a universal Spider-Man performance gain.
