AMC stock and AMC debt expose investors to different risks. Common shareholders own a residual claim: their investment can fall sharply in value and be diluted by new share issuance. Debt holders have contractual payment claims that generally rank ahead of common equity, but an AMC note is not risk-free: payment, refinancing, interest-rate, market-price and recovery risks depend on its specific terms. AMC’s latest reviewed quarterly filing reported $3,914.2 million in corporate borrowing principal at June 30, 2026, including $3,202.8 million scheduled for 2029. Those are historical issuer-reported figures, not live market data or a prediction of default.
Is AMC stock riskier than AMC bonds?
There is no single answer without specifying what “riskier” means and which debt issue is being compared. AMC common stock has no maturity date or promised repayment; its value depends on what remains for shareholders after the company meets its obligations. Debt has contractual terms, but investors can still lose money if AMC cannot pay, if refinancing becomes difficult, if the security’s market price falls, or if its eventual recovery is low.

AMC’s capital-stock description says common holders share ratably in assets available to common holders after any preferred-stock claims are paid. Debt claims are governed by the terms and legal priority of each instrument. Do not assume all AMC borrowings have the same seniority, collateral or guarantees. AMC’s description of capital stock reflects the company’s status as of December 31, 2025; the June 30, 2026 Form 10-Q provides the later debt and liquidity figures below.

What AMC’s debt, liquidity and cash-flow figures show
AMC reported $3,914.2 million of corporate borrowings by principal at June 30, 2026. Principal is not the same as carrying value on the balance sheet. The maturity schedule is concentrated in 2029:
| Scheduled maturity period | Principal reported by AMC |
|---|---|
| Six months ending December 31, 2026 | $137.5 million |
| 2027 | $23.9 million |
| 2028 | $23.7 million |
| 2029 | $3,202.8 million |
| 2030 | $120.4 million |
| 2031 | $405.9 million |
These are the company’s scheduled principal maturities, not a forecast that each amount will be repaid from cash on hand. The filing also reports $778.4 million in cash and cash equivalents at June 30, 2026; restricted cash is separate and should not be treated as freely available cash.
AMC reported a $901.0 million working-capital deficit, excluding restricted cash, at that date. The company says working capital included operating lease liabilities and deferred revenues, so the figure needs that context rather than being read as a simple measure of cash due immediately.
For the six months ended June 30, 2026, AMC generated $106.9 million of net cash from operating activities; in the comparable six months of 2025, it used $231.6 million. AMC attributed much of the year-over-year improvement to attendance, ticket prices, food and beverage spending per patron, advertising and working-capital timing. A stronger six-month period is relevant evidence, but it does not establish that the cash flow will recur.

Why the terms of an AMC debt issue matter
“AMC bonds” is not one uniform investment. Rates, maturity dates, payment mechanics and potential equity conversion differ by instrument. For example, at June 30, 2026, AMC reported a 10.639% rate on $1,984.2 million principal of Muvico Term Loans. The rate can move with reference rates and leverage terms. It reported a 11.5%–15.0% range for $903.4 million principal of New 2029 Notes, with 15.0% then in effect; the reported rate depended on the leverage ratio. These issuer-reported rates and principal amounts describe those instruments at that date, not every AMC debt security or a current yield available to a buyer.
Some AMC debt is exchangeable and may create equity dilution if exchanged for common shares. That feature can affect both the note’s value and the share count; it does not make the debt equivalent to ordinary stock. The filings also describe refinancing and liquidity risks, including AMC’s warning that maturity extensions might not provide enough time for attendance and revenue to rise sufficiently to generate net positive operating cash flow and address liquidity concerns. AMC’s February 9, 2026 prospectus supplement sets out that warning in the context of its refinancing disclosures.

Before comparing a note’s stated coupon with a share’s possible return, identify the precise issue and check its current market price. A coupon is not the same as yield, and neither guarantees repayment or recovery.
How dilution and volatility affect AMC shareholders
AMC disclosed that it may issue common shares for liquidity, debt repayment or refinancing, among other purposes, and that additional issuance can dilute existing holders. The company reported 892,604,638 common shares outstanding as of July 22, 2026. That is a dated share count, not a guarantee of the current count.

The same filing reported an NYSE intraday share-price range of $0.93 on March 27, 2026, to $2.96 on June 22, 2026, for 2026 through the dates stated. This historical range is not a live quote or a range through October 4. AMC described its common-share prices and trading volume as having experienced, and potentially continuing to experience, “extreme volatility.”
For an existing shareholder, dilution means a smaller percentage ownership if new shares are issued and the holder does not acquire additional shares. It does not mechanically determine the future share price: proceeds, the reason for issuance, operating results and market conditions also matter.
Can AMC go bankrupt, and what happens to shareholders?
AMC’s filings identify liquidity, debt maturities and refinancing as risks; they do not establish a probability or date of bankruptcy. A large maturity concentration means repayment or refinancing capacity is important, but it is not by itself proof that a default will occur. Nor does an extension eliminate the underlying risk if cash generation remains insufficient.

If a company restructures or enters liquidation, creditors’ contractual and legal priority generally places them ahead of common shareholders, subject to the specific instruments, collateral, guarantees and applicable proceedings. Shareholders are residual claimants and could lose some or all of their investment. A debt holder is not assured full repayment: recovery depends on available value, the claims ahead of and alongside that instrument, and its exact legal terms.
What retail investors should check before comparing them
- For shares: review the dated share count and issuance disclosures, operating cash flow, liquidity, debt maturities, restructuring risks and share-price volatility.
- For a note or bond: identify the exact issue or CUSIP, issuer and guarantors, seniority, collateral, covenants, coupon and any cash/PIK toggle, maturity, call or exchange terms, and current price and yield.
- For either security: compare the potential loss with your time horizon and ability to bear it; issuer filings describe company-reported facts and risks, not an independent default probability or recovery valuation.
The reviewed company filings do not provide live stock quotes, secondary-market note prices, current yields, ratings or buyer transaction costs through October 4, 2026. Those figures must be checked against current market data, and each debt issue’s terms must be examined separately before drawing a conclusion about its yield, priority or collateral.
