Ambrosia Energy has begun work on a planned 10 GWh battery factory near Austin, Texas. The roughly 150,000-square-foot plant is intended to supply the company’s own solar-and-battery power plants, which provide continuous electricity to data centers and industrial customers rather than selling retail battery packs. Ambrosia expects full production in two to three years and says the factory could support about 300 megawatts of power-plant capacity annually.

What Ambrosia is building in Texas

TechCrunch reported on October 14, 2026, that Ambrosia had started work on the Austin-area facility. The planned manufacturing capacity is 10 GWh, in a building expected to cover about 150,000 square feet. Chief executive Ben Longmier said the plant should reach full production in two to three years and could provide enough battery output for approximately 300 MW of power-plant capacity each year.

Ambrosia emerged from stealth in June 2026 with a focus on supplying power to data centers. Its factory is part of a vertically integrated model: the company develops solar fields, manufactures battery packs in-house, and operates the resulting power plants. This is not being presented as a conventional battery business with a catalog of consumer products.

Longmier told TechCrunch, “We buy existing cells and we make our own pack in-house, and it has the fewest parts by a factor of about 100 compared to any other competitor we’ve seen.” Ambrosia says using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells and a simplified pack design should reduce cost and shorten deployment.

How the off-grid system is supposed to work

Solar generation during the day

Solar panels serve the customer’s daytime load while sending surplus electricity to the battery system. The power plant is designed around the data center’s continuous demand rather than around exporting occasional excess power.

Battery discharge at night and in poor weather

LFP batteries discharge after sunset and during cloudy periods. Ambrosia’s materials describe off-grid operation as the default, with grid-tied service available when a customer requests it. In an off-grid configuration, the plant must carry the data center through overnight demand, weather variation, maintenance windows and other periods when solar output is inadequate.

Power delivered as a service

Ambrosia’s launch announcement says, “A power plant should be deliverable in 12 months, not a decade.” That is the company’s target, not an independently audited delivery result. The business model is to sell continuous renewable electricity from an integrated plant, not to ship a named battery product to a retail buyer.

The project figures and what they mean

99.9% reliability/availability Ambrosia, 2026 Company claim rather than an audited operating result.
300 MW solar plus 660 MWh batteries for 30 MW continuous power TechCrunch, 2026 A configuration the company described with a 99.3% uptime goal.
200 MW solar plus 20 MW continuous output Ambrosia’s current website, 2026 A separate project description; it should not be treated as the same configuration as the 30 MW example.

The 660 MWh example equates to roughly 22 hours at a constant 30 MW draw before conversion losses and operating reserves. In practice, solar production, reserve margins, weather forecasts and maintenance planning determine whether the system can sustain a full 24-hour service period.

What the 10 GWh capacity could mean for data-center energy

Battery energy (GWh) and plant power (MW) answer different questions. GWh describes how much energy can be stored across the factory’s output; MW describes how quickly a plant can deliver electricity. A 10 GWh manufacturing line therefore does not mean one customer receives a 10 GWh battery or that every plant will have the same solar-to-storage ratio.

Ambrosia’s stated goal is to standardize an integrated package so a customer needing 10–100 MW of continuous renewable power can receive a dedicated plant more quickly. The company says a customer may co-locate on Ambrosia-owned land or have a plant built on the customer’s land.

Can solar and batteries run an AI data center 24/7 off-grid?

Technically, yes, if the solar field, battery capacity, inverters, controls and backup provisions are sized for the site’s worst expected operating conditions. A continuously running AI facility cannot be designed from average daily sunlight alone; it needs enough stored energy for overnight demand and extended low-solar periods, plus redundancy for equipment outages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Load profile: The plant must be sized for the data center’s continuous MW demand and any rapid changes from computing workloads.
  • Solar oversizing: Daytime generation has to serve the live load and recharge the batteries for the next night.
  • Storage reserve: Usable capacity is lower than the nameplate figure after conversion losses, degradation and emergency reserve.
  • Controls and thermal systems: Off-grid operation requires power-quality management, islanded controls and cooling for both servers and batteries.
  • Extended cloudy periods: The customer and operator need an explicit plan for weather events that exceed the battery’s normal duration.

Ambrosia’s website lists 24-hour LFP storage, 100% renewable power and a 99.9% capacity-factor claim. Those are company statements, not independently verified performance results.

What is known about Ambrosia’s early operations

TechCrunch reported that sections of the West Texas pilot had operated continuously for more than 100 days and could generate 200 kW around the clock. Ambrosia’s own site separately reports 100% uptime for its pilot over 30 days. The periods and measurements are different, so they should not be combined into one test result.

The company’s larger reliability claims also remain prospective. The 99.3% uptime goal attached to the 300 MW solar/660 MWh, 30 MW continuous configuration is a design target, while the 99.9% reliability or availability figure is a broader company claim.

How this approach differs from conventional alternatives

Question Ambrosia’s integrated plant Conventional solar plus four-hour storage Natural-gas generation
Deployment promise Under one year is the company’s target; factory reaches full production in two to three years. No like-for-like figure is stated here. No like-for-like figure is stated here.
Storage duration Ambrosia describes 24-hour LFP storage; individual project sizing varies. Four hours by definition of the comparison case. Fuel storage and dispatch characteristics differ; no figure is stated here.
Renewable share Company describes the service as 100% renewable. Depends on the project’s solar and grid mix. Not a renewable generation source.
Grid dependence Off-grid by default, with grid-tied service on request. Often grid-connected, depending on project design. Can operate independently when fuel and equipment are available.
Evidence status Factory and cost figures are reported plans; reliability and capacity-factor numbers are company claims. No project-specific evidence is supplied for this comparison. No project-specific evidence is supplied for this comparison.

What happens next

The immediate milestone is construction and equipment build-out near Austin. If the two-to-three-year schedule holds, the factory would move from planned capacity to full production later in the decade. Its importance will depend on whether Ambrosia can turn the manufacturing scale into repeatable projects, meet its $100/MWh target and maintain the advertised availability under real data-center loads.

For prospective customers, the relevant offer is continuous renewable power for data centers or industrial sites, with the choice of co-locating on Ambrosia land or hosting a plant on customer property. The 10 GWh figure signals manufacturing ambition; it does not, by itself, prove that a particular AI data center can run off-grid 24/7.
