Former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger was approved for parole on October 1, 2026, after serving seven years of a 10-year sentence for murdering Botham Jean in his Dallas apartment. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles’ approval is not a confirmed release date: reports on October 1 said Texas had not announced when Guyger would leave prison.
Why was Amber Guyger granted parole?
The Board’s reported reasons centered on Guyger’s prison record and participation in programs, not a new finding about the 2018 killing. CBS Texas and KERA reported that the Board cited no documented pattern of violent or assaultive arrests or convictions, satisfactory institutional adjustment, and completion of treatment-plan programs intended to improve her chances of obtaining and keeping stable full-time employment. The Associated Press reported that the Board reviewed a large amount of information in the case.
Those are the case-specific grounds attributed to the Board. Its broader mission is to make impartial, informed release decisions, prioritize public safety, protect victims’ rights and support safe reentry; that general mission does not add further case-specific reasons for this decision.
When will Amber Guyger be released?
An official release date had not been announced in the October 1, 2026 coverage. Parole approval means the Board approved release under parole; it does not establish that Guyger had already left prison. The exact release date and supervision conditions were not confirmed in the reports cited here.

How long did Amber Guyger serve, and what was her sentence?

What happened to Botham Jean?
Jean, a 26-year-old accountant from St. Lucia, was in his Dallas apartment on September 6, 2018, when Guyger entered and shot him. She was then an off-duty Dallas police officer living in the apartment directly below his. At trial, Guyger testified that she believed she had entered her own apartment and thought Jean was an intruder.

What did Botham Jean’s family say about parole?
Jean’s family opposed parole. Their attorney, civil-rights lawyer Lee Merritt, said the family was deeply disappointed and that Guyger’s release after seven years made the loss feel smaller in the eyes of the system. Merritt also said, “Justice cannot be selective.” CBS reported that the family requested privacy as it processed the news. These are the family’s response and assessment, not the Board’s stated rationale.

How does the separate civil case relate?
