Amazon’s new tablets make a meaningful change for mobile gaming: the Alexa Tablet lineup runs Android and includes Google Play Store access, rather than relying on Fire OS and Amazon’s Appstore. The 11-inch Alexa Tablet 11 is the clearest gaming option on paper, but it had not begun shipping as of Amazon’s October 8, 2026 announcement, so its real-world game performance remains untested in the sources available.
What changed with Amazon’s new tablets?
Amazon announced three Alexa Tablets on October 8, 2026: the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, Alexa Tablet 11, and Alexa Tablet 8. Amazon says all three run Android and include full Google Play Store access. That is a substantial platform shift for people who want access to Android games beyond the Fire Appstore catalog. Amazon’s announcement describes the new software and hardware.

Google Play access does not by itself establish that every Android game will work well—or at all—on each model. Compatibility and performance still depend on the particular game and device, and independent testing of the new tablets was not available by the announcement date.
Which new Amazon tablet looks best for gaming?
The Alexa Tablet 11 is the most straightforward gaming proposition in Amazon’s new lineup: it combines a mid-sized screen with a 90Hz refresh rate and 8GB of RAM, without the higher announced starting price of the 12 Pro. Amazon lists the following specifications and launch details:

The 12 Pro has the highest stated refresh rate and memory ceiling, but Amazon’s claims do not show how it performs in specific games or how it compares with the 11 in sustained play. The 8 is the lower-priced, smaller-screen option in the announced lineup; its 4GB of RAM gives less headroom on paper than the other two, but actual game performance has not been established.

Does the older Fire Max 11 show how the new models will perform?
No. The Fire Max 11 is useful context for Amazon’s previous tablet approach, but its results should not be treated as a preview of the Android-based Alexa Tablets. The 2023 Fire Max 11 has a 2000×1200 11-inch display, 4GB RAM, a MediaTek MT8188J processor, and Fire OS 8, according to Amazon’s developer specifications.

At the Fire Max 11’s May 2023 launch, Amazon called it “our biggest and most powerful tablet yet” and claimed it was “almost 50% faster” than its next-fastest tablet, with 14-hour battery life. Those were Amazon’s launch claims, not independent test results. Amazon also positioned Luna streaming as a way to play games on the Fire Max 11, but cloud access did not erase the sluggish experience Tom’s Guide observed with Fortnite on its review unit.
What role does Luna play?
Amazon Luna is a cloud-gaming route, distinct from installing and running a game locally. Amazon says Luna works on compatible Fire Tablets from 2018 onward and supports compatible Bluetooth controllers as well as the Luna Controller. Amazon’s Luna device guidance and its supported-device information are the places to check compatibility.

Cloud play depends on the game, the network connection, controller support, and whether Luna is available in the user’s country. The sources do not establish latency or Luna performance on the new Alexa Tablets. Check Amazon’s current regional availability and the specific game’s requirements before relying on Luna as a substitute for local Android gaming.

The announcement is not enough to answer that as a market verdict: the available sources provide no sales, market-share, adoption, or player-preference figures. It does show Amazon addressing a major limitation of its older tablets—restricted app-store access—while advertising gaming-oriented display, processor, and memory specifications on the new models.

The remaining question is execution. Google Play access makes the lineup more relevant to Android players, but the announced specifications cannot establish game compatibility, frame rates, heat, battery life during play, or sustained performance. Until the tablets ship and are independently tested, the fair assessment is promising but unproven.
What about buying the Fire Max 11 now?
The Fire Max 11 is not a clean substitute for the new Android models if Google Play access is central to the decision. TechRadar reported on October 7, 2026 that the Fire Max 11 had been discontinued in the US; that report does not establish availability in every country. A successor mentioned in the article was a rumor, not a confirmed product. Check local stock and support before considering the older model.
