The US launch price was $59.99, with shipping beginning June 29, 2022. Amazon described the runtime as 40% longer—not as a disclosed increase in battery capacity.
What Amazon launched
The announcement covered two related products: the standard Fire 7 (12th generation) and the Fire 7 Kids. The regular tablet opened for US preorders on May 18, 2022, at a launch price of $59.99 and began shipping on June 29, 2022. Amazon offered black, denim, and rose finishes, with coordinating covers announced at $28.99 at launch. Those were 2022 US launch prices, not verified prices for 2026.
The announcement is documented in Amazon’s US press release. Amazon’s technical listing identifies the tablet as the Fire 7 (2022, 12th generation).
The important Fire 7 upgrades
2 GB of RAM
The 2022 Fire 7 has 2 GB of RAM, double the 1 GB in the 2019 ninth-generation model. Amazon associated the increase with quicker app launches, better responsiveness, and faster switching between apps. It is a substantial improvement over the old Fire 7, but 2 GB remains entry-level: demanding multitasking and modern 3D games can still expose its limits.

A faster processor
The tablet uses a 2 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT8168V/B platform. Amazon claimed it was 30% faster than the previous generation. That percentage is Amazon’s comparison claim, not an independent result that applies equally to every app or benchmark.
Longer advertised battery life
Amazon rated the 2022 model for up to 10 hours, compared with up to seven hours for the 2019 Fire 7, and called that a 40% improvement. The estimate depends on brightness, wireless activity, video playback, downloads, games, background processes, and battery condition.
The announcement does not provide a verified battery capacity in milliamp-hours. Therefore, the precise claim is that the new Fire 7 has 40% longer advertised runtime, not that Amazon confirmed a larger physical battery.
USB-C and expanded card support
USB-C replaces the older micro-USB connector, making charging and data accessories easier to share with newer devices. The tablet accepts a microSD card of up to 1 TB, compared with up to 512 GB in the 2019 announcement. Internal storage remains 16 GB or 32 GB, and the operating system and preinstalled apps consume part of those nominal capacities.

The display and Fire OS trade-offs
A very basic screen
A 1024 × 600 panel is adequate for children’s content, casual browsing, simple games, and reading large text. It is visibly less sharp than an HD tablet for comics, detailed photographs, documents, and premium video. The low-resolution display is one of the clearest reasons the Fire 7 costs less than Amazon’s HD models.
Fire OS is Android-based, not standard Google Android
Fire OS 8 is based on Android 11, but the tablet uses Amazon’s interface and Amazon Appstore. It is not equivalent to a Google-certified Android tablet. App availability, update behavior, and account integration can differ, so buyers should verify any essential app before purchasing. Amazon’s Fire OS 8 developer announcement is at this page. Do not assume Google Play is officially included or that every Android application is available.

Choose 32 GB if the price difference is reasonable, or add a reputable microSD card for downloaded video, music, books, and photos. Removable storage does not replace internal space for every app or system component; installation and movement rules vary.
What the Fire 7 Kids package added
Amazon launched Fire 7 Kids at $109.99 in the US. It used the same core tablet hardware but was not simply a case sold with a regular Fire 7. The package included a kid-proof case with an adjustable handle and kickstand, parental controls, one year of Amazon Kids+, and a two-year worry-free guarantee.

- Children: The Kids edition’s case, controls, content service, and warranty are its main advantages.
- Readers and casual users: It is compact for Kindle books, basic streaming, web browsing, and simple games.
- Travelers: Its low launch price makes it a practical backup or child-travel tablet.

Who should avoid it?
- Students and professionals who need sustained multitasking or laptop replacement features.
- Gamers expecting demanding 3D performance.

Amazon also claimed the tablet was twice as durable as the latest iPad mini in its tumble testing. That is an Amazon test claim, not independent durability evidence.
Fire 7 alternatives
| Model | What Amazon lists | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Fire HD 8 | 8-inch 1280 × 800 display, 32 GB or 64 GB storage, 2 GB or 3 GB RAM depending on version, up to 13 hours’ advertised battery life, up to 1 TB microSD | Better general media and reading experience when a larger tablet and higher price are acceptable |
| Fire HD 10 | 10.1-inch 1080p display, 3 GB RAM, up to 13 hours’ advertised battery life | Video, documents, split-screen work, and light productivity |
| Fire Max 11 | 11-inch display, 4 GB RAM, up to 14 hours’ advertised battery life | Heavier multitasking and optional keyboard or stylus productivity |
| Non-Amazon Android tablet or iPad | Varies by model | Google Play access, broader app compatibility, stronger displays, or longer-term support |
Specifications for the HD 8 are in Amazon’s Fire HD documentation. Amazon’s broader lineup is listed at its Fire tablet overview.
Is the Fire 7 still a current product?
As of August 18, 2026, this is a historical account of a 2022 launch, not a new announcement. Amazon’s developer documentation still identifies the Fire 7 (2022, 12th generation) among supported retail-market devices, but the available official material does not verify a dependable current US price or inventory status. The $59.99 figure should therefore be read only as the original launch price. Amazon’s marketplace documentation is available at this page.
Bottom line
The 2022 Fire 7 was a meaningful upgrade over the 2019 model because 2 GB of RAM, USB-C, expanded microSD support, and a longer advertised runtime addressed real weaknesses. It remained firmly a budget tablet, however: the 1024 × 600 display, entry-level processor, limited memory, and Fire OS app ecosystem matter more than the headline percentages for many buyers. Choose it for low-cost portability or managed children’s use; choose the Fire HD 8 or a non-Amazon tablet when screen quality, app choice, or broader performance matters more.
