Short answer: Amazon really did sell the new Apple iPad 9th generation for about $199 during its Labor Day promotion in late August and early September 2024. The offer covered the 64GB, Wi‑Fi model, normally listed around $329. The available record does not verify that the same price is live in 2026, so treat $199 as a historical price unless you confirm the listing, configuration, stock and checkout total yourself.
Price status: Historical $199–$199.99 price for a new 64GB Wi‑Fi iPad 9th generation. Last documented in reports dated September 4, 2024. A current Amazon price requires live verification.

What the 2024 Amazon deal included
The deal was for Apple’s 2021 iPad 9th generation, not the newer 10th-generation iPad, an iPad Air or a renewed unit. Reports from Engadget, AppleInsider and other outlets documented the 64GB Wi‑Fi configuration at $199 or $199.99 during the Labor Day promotion. AppleInsider reported that Amazon’s promotion could end or sell out, and later coverage said the deal continued into September while inventory was limited.
The usual comparison price was about $329, making the markdown roughly $130, or about 40 percent. Several outlets called it an all-time or record low; that description should be understood as their characterization of the documented price, not a guarantee that no lower price ever existed.
#1 Best Overall
The 256GB Wi‑Fi version also received discounts in some reports, including a $329.99 price with an on-page coupon, but it cost substantially more and was later reported sold out. Do not assume that price applies to the 64GB model, a cellular model or every color.
Historical coverage: Engadget, AppleInsider (August 29, 2024) and AppleInsider (September 4, 2024).

Why it was a strong budget buy
- Low entry price: $199 bought a new iPad rather than a used or renewed tablet.
- Enough for everyday tasks: The A13 Bionic is suitable for web browsing, streaming, reading, video calls, schoolwork, casual games and basic productivity.
- Useful size: The 10.2-inch display gives media, documents and split-screen tasks more room than an iPad mini.
- Familiar controls: Touch ID, a physical Home button and a headphone jack appeal to users who prefer the older layout.
- Accessory support: First-generation Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard compatibility covers notes, school assignments and light typing.
Why to think twice
- It is a 2021 design: Large bezels and the Home button make it look and feel older than current iPads.
- Only 64GB: Games, offline video, photos and system data can consume that capacity quickly.
- Lightning instead of USB‑C: Newer iPads and many current accessories use USB‑C, so cable sharing is less convenient.
- Older Pencil experience: The first-generation Pencil uses the Lightning ecosystem and is less convenient to pair and charge than newer models.
- No guaranteed update timetable: Apple’s specifications do not promise a specific number of future iPadOS updates, so avoid buying on an assumed support deadline.
At a substantially higher price, compare a newer standard iPad or an Apple Certified Refurbished model. A newer tablet may justify the difference if you need USB‑C, more storage, demanding gaming or a more modern accessory ecosystem.

How to verify an Amazon listing before buying
Open Amazon’s iPad 9th-generation 64GB search, then check the actual variant and checkout page. Use this sequence:
- Confirm the title says iPad 9th generation and identifies the 64GB capacity.
- Select Wi‑Fi, not Wi‑Fi + Cellular, and recheck the color after selection.
- Confirm the condition is New, unless the headline explicitly says renewed or refurbished.
- Check the named seller, fulfillment provider, return policy and warranty information.
- Make sure the displayed price remains $199 or $199.99 after selecting the correct configuration.
- If a coupon is required, verify that it is visible, explainable and does not depend on a special payment method, subscription or trade-in.
- Check stock, shipping charges, taxes and delivery dates for your ZIP code.
- Compare the final checkout total and record the date and time you checked it.
Amazon marketplace pages can switch sellers or variants without warning. An affiliate link is misleading if it opens a different capacity, condition or generation, so inspect the selected option rather than relying on the headline.

Alternatives if the price is no longer compelling
Newer standard iPad
Apple’s current standard iPad line offers a newer design and USB‑C. See the official iPad buying page. It costs more than the historical $199 deal, so compare the live price gap and the storage included.

Apple Certified Refurbished iPad
The Apple Certified Refurbished store can provide newer generations at reduced prices. Availability changes frequently; check the exact model, battery condition policy, warranty and included accessories. Refurbished and new units are not equivalent.
Best Value
- Gorgeous 10.2-inch Retina display with True Tone - A13 Bionic chip with Neural Engine
- 8MP Wide back camera, 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with Center Stage
- Touch ID for secure authentication and Apple Pay - Stereo speakers
iPad mini
The iPad mini is easier to carry but has less screen area for split-screen work and is usually more expensive than an entry-level iPad.
Accessories
The first-generation Apple Pencil supports notes and drawing on this iPad. Apple’s Smart Keyboard adds light typing, but either accessory raises the total cost and does not turn the tablet into a full laptop.
Bottom line
The 2024 Labor Day promotion was an unusually good price for a new 64GB Wi‑Fi iPad 9th generation. Its value came primarily from the $199 price, not from having current hardware: the tablet is a 2021 model with 64GB storage, a Lightning port and an older design. Buy only when the Amazon page still shows the correct new configuration at a compelling price; otherwise, compare newer or Apple-refurbished iPads.
