Amazon says it will invest more than $1 billion over five years in U.S. communities where it operates data centers through a program called Built Together. The commitments include community-college degree access and job training, energy upgrades for homes and public buildings, water projects, and flexible funding for local priorities. They are announced targets—not a universal open application or a guarantee that every resident will receive assistance.
What Amazon has committed to
Amazon describes Built Together as more than $1 billion in additional investment over five years, on top of its existing community investments. The focus is U.S. communities where the company operates data centers. Its plan combines education and workforce programs, energy affordability and water initiatives, and funding for community-selected needs. Amazon’s Built Together program page outlines the strands and current rollout caveats.

Community college and local job training
Amazon aims to connect more than 300,000 students to free degree access. It says eligible students can pursue certificates or associate degrees through community-college partners, with Amazon covering remaining out-of-pocket costs after financial aid. Fields listed include electrical trades, HVAC, fiber optics, IT, healthcare, education, public safety, and advanced manufacturing.

Home and public-building upgrades
Over five years, Amazon targets energy-efficiency upgrades for more than 30,000 homes and over 300 schools and community buildings. Possible measures include heat pumps, HVAC improvements, insulation, water heaters, batteries, and solar installations. The specific measures offered depend on local program delivery; Amazon does not name a standard package that applies everywhere.
Water projects and flexible local funding
The plan also includes water-related work and flexible funding distributed through local foundations and nonprofits. Amazon says residents and organizations will help identify priorities, which may include roads, parks, fire-department equipment, housing, schools, and disaster preparedness. The company reports more than 65 water replenishment projects and says they are expected to return over 8 billion gallons annually; it also says its data centers were seven times more water-efficient than the industry average in 2025. These are Amazon-reported figures, not independent assessments of every facility or watershed. Amazon’s October 2, 2026 announcement provides its account of the commitments and water claims.

Can you get free college or energy upgrades?
Possibly, if your community participates and you meet the requirements set by its local partners. But Amazon’s public materials do not describe a single nationwide application that is open to everyone. The company says it is establishing college agreements and local application and enrollment processes; availability and timing vary by community. Check the Built Together page and the relevant local college, foundation, nonprofit, or program administrator for current openings and eligibility.

The announcement does not specify a consumer purchase requirement, a qualifying heat-pump model, or an individual grant amount. Amazon names heat pumps as one possible upgrade, but that does not make a particular product or retailer part of the program.
How much might households save?
Amazon says the upgrades are designed to reduce energy costs by an estimated 20–40 percent and projects approximately $700 in annual savings per household. Those figures are estimates, not guaranteed bill reductions. Amazon’s program page says actual savings may vary and monthly bills can still change with energy rates, weather, and household use.

Amazon announced Built Together amid growing public and political opposition to data center development. The Associated Press reports concerns that new facilities can affect electricity prices and water supplies. AWS CEO Matt Garman acknowledged the unease, saying, “We understand why there is apprehension in some communities where data centers are being built.” The Associated Press’s October 2, 2026 report places the pledge in that broader debate.

Amazon argues that data centers support cloud computing and AI and can bring local tax revenue, construction activity, and jobs. Its announcement cites a Mangum Economics estimate that the average Loudoun County homeowner would pay an additional $5,800 in annual property taxes absent data center revenue. That is a geographically specific estimate relayed by Amazon, not a nationwide figure or a forecast for every homeowner near a data center.
Community investment does not by itself show that a particular facility’s effects on power, water, or local costs have been resolved, nor does it establish community acceptance. Amazon also says it no longer uses nondisclosure agreements with government agencies it works with on data center projects; that is a company-stated transparency commitment announced alongside the program.
What to watch as the program rolls out
The practical value of Built Together will depend on how local partners translate the broad targets into openings, eligibility rules, funding amounts, and completed upgrades. For a specific community, the useful evidence will be published application details and reports on what was delivered—not just the national pledge or projected savings.
