Amazon’s Prime Try Before You Buy fashion benefit has ended. January 31, 2025 was the last reported day eligible customers could place orders through the program. It is no longer a current way to receive clothes, shoes, or accessories, try them at home, and pay only for what you keep.
The former service allowed qualifying Prime members to order as many as six eligible fashion items, keep them for seven days after delivery, and return unwanted pieces without being charged for those returned items. The instructions below explain the historical process, the reason Amazon gave for ending it, and how to evaluate ordinary fashion returns now.

What Prime Try Before You Buy was
Prime Try Before You Buy was a limited fashion benefit for Prime members. It applied only to participating apparel, footwear, and accessory listings, not to every product sold on Amazon and not to general merchandise.
The central idea was to move the fitting room into the customer’s home. A shopper selected eligible items, received them before making a final keep-or-return decision, and was charged only for the items kept at the end of the trial period. Returned items were not charged under the program’s rules.

That arrangement was different from a normal purchase followed by a return. Under an ordinary order, a payment authorization or charge could occur at checkout and the refund would be processed after an approved return. Try Before You Buy was designed around deciding what to keep during a defined trial window.
How the service worked when it was available
1. The shopper needed an eligible Prime account and listing
Participation required Prime membership and an item that Amazon had enrolled in the benefit. Eligibility was determined at the listing level, so two similar garments could have different checkout options. The program covered selected fashion inventory rather than the entire apparel department.
2. Up to six items could be placed in one trial order
The documented allowance was up to six eligible items. The limit applied to the number of qualifying pieces in the Try Before You Buy order; it was not a promise that every size, color, brand, or seller would qualify. A shopper who wanted more than six pieces had to use another order or ordinary purchasing and return rules, if available.

3. Items were delivered for at-home fitting
After delivery, the customer could examine the fit, fabric, color, construction, and comfort at home. The service was intended for a realistic try-on, but it did not remove normal obligations to keep merchandise clean and in returnable condition. The order and return instructions supplied with the shipment governed the practical handling requirements.
4. The try-on window lasted seven days after delivery
The trial period was seven days after delivery. That clock was tied to delivery rather than to the date an order was placed. Customers needed to make their keep-or-return decisions within the stated window and follow the return instructions for unwanted items.
5. The customer kept selected pieces and returned the rest
At the end of the trial, the shopper identified which items to keep and sent back the unwanted ones. The program’s promise was that customers would not be charged for the returned items. Charges for kept items and any applicable order details were handled under the program terms shown at the time.

6. The feature was not a permanent payment-free fitting room
Try Before You Buy did not mean a customer could keep merchandise indefinitely without payment. The six-item cap, seven-day period, eligible-listing restriction, and return requirements were core parts of the benefit. Missing the deadline or failing to return an item could lead to a charge under the applicable terms.

A 2022 Amazon UK guide directed shoppers to the app’s “Fashion & Beauty” area. That was a historical navigation instruction, not evidence that the feature remains in the current app. App layouts, marketplace rules, and labels can change, so searching for that menu today should not be interpreted as proof that Try Before You Buy is still offered.
If an old article or screenshot tells you to open “Fashion & Beauty” and select Try Before You Buy, treat it as an explanation of the former interface. The reported US shutdown means those steps should not be used as current purchasing instructions.
Why Amazon ended Try Before You Buy
When the Associated Press reported the shutdown, an Amazon spokesperson said the program reached only a limited number of items and that customers were increasingly using newer digital tools to judge fit. Amazon specifically cited virtual try-on, personalized size recommendations, review highlights, and improved size charts.
That is Amazon’s stated rationale, not independent proof that any particular feature caused the closure. The company’s explanation indicates a shift from shipping multiple items for physical trials toward helping shoppers make a decision before ordering. It does not establish that every replacement feature is available in every country, category, or listing.

The final reported order date was January 31, 2025. Customers who used the benefit before that cutoff still needed to follow the terms attached to their orders, including the applicable return deadline. A page describing the old program should therefore be read as historical unless a current marketplace page explicitly offers a different service.

What Amazon fashion shoppers can do now
Free returns may still be available, but they are not the old benefit
Amazon said customers would continue to have access to free returns across its apparel department when it announced the phase-out. Free returns are not the same as receiving items without an initial purchase charge: you generally buy the item under the listing’s checkout terms and then return it if it qualifies.
Eligibility, deadlines, refund timing, and return-shipping rules can vary by marketplace, seller, product category, and condition. Check the current product page and the order’s return center before relying on a “free returns” expectation.
UK-specific guidance
Amazon’s UK help information says fashion items such as clothes, shoes, handbags, jewellery, and watches can qualify for free returns. The same guidance warns that seller-fulfilled items may need to be returned to the seller. This UK policy does not establish universal terms for the United States or other marketplaces, and it does not guarantee that every listing in those categories is return-eligible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse item-level information, not a site-wide assumption
The safest current approach is to evaluate each listing individually. A product page may show a return deadline, a “free returns” notice, the party responsible for fulfillment, and exceptions that do not appear on another item. Save or review those details before placing an order, especially when buying from a third-party seller.
How to check a fashion listing before ordering
- Open the exact product page. Do not rely on a category page, an old article, or another color or size of the same product.
- Read the return statement near the price and purchase controls. Look for the stated return window, whether return shipping is free, and any category or condition restrictions.
- Confirm who sells and who fulfills the item. Amazon-sold or Amazon-fulfilled orders can have different instructions from seller-fulfilled orders.
- Check the destination marketplace. Rules shown on a UK page, for example, should not be applied automatically to a US, Canadian, or other account.
- Review the order confirmation. Keep the return deadline and instructions associated with that specific order; they control if the listing changes later.
- Inspect the item promptly after delivery. Try it on in a way that preserves tags, packaging, and condition required for a return.
Former Try Before You Buy versus ordinary fashion returns
| Feature | Former Try Before You Buy | Ordinary purchase and return |
|---|---|---|
| Current availability | Ended; January 31, 2025 was the last reported order date. | May be available, depending on the marketplace and listing. |
| Who could use it | Prime members ordering selected eligible fashion items. | Eligibility depends on the current listing, seller, marketplace, and account terms. |
| Quantity rule | Up to six eligible items per trial order. | No single Try Before You Buy allowance; any quantity limits are listing or order specific. |
| Decision period | Seven days after delivery. | The return window shown for that order; a universal period is not established. |
| Payment model | Payment was for items kept after the trial; returned items were not charged under the program. | Normal checkout and refund procedures apply. |
| Return shipping | Handled under the program’s return process. | May be free or paid; confirm the item-level policy. |
| Seller differences | Only qualifying program inventory was included. | Seller-fulfilled items may have separate instructions and return destinations. |
What about Personal Shopper by Prime Wardrobe?
Amazon announced a separate styling service called Personal Shopper by Prime Wardrobe in 2019. That announcement described at-home try-on and payment only for pieces the customer kept, and it listed a historical price of $4.99 per month. The announcement does not establish that the service remains available or that the price, eligibility, or terms are unchanged.
Do not treat Personal Shopper as a current replacement without checking your marketplace and account. A historical announcement can explain how the service was designed, but only a current Amazon page can confirm that it is offered to you now.

Common problems after the shutdown
“I can still see an old Try Before You Buy page.”
Cached pages, saved bookmarks, search snippets, and old help articles can remain visible after a program ends. Check the current product page and your account’s active benefits. The reported final order date means an old description alone is not evidence of live availability.

“The item says free returns, but checkout looks different.”
Recheck the seller, fulfillment method, destination address, and exact size or color. Return eligibility can change between variants or sellers. If the order page does not display free-return terms, contact support before ordering rather than assuming the category label applies.
“The seller says I must pay return postage.”
Seller-fulfilled orders may have different return instructions, particularly in the UK guidance. Read the seller’s policy and Amazon’s order-specific return options. If the listing’s promise and the return label conflict, keep screenshots and ask customer service for clarification before mailing the item.
“I missed the seven-day period.”
The seven-day period belonged to the discontinued Try Before You Buy benefit. For a current ordinary order, use the deadline shown in that order’s return center; do not assume the old seven-day rule applies.
Bottom line for shoppers
Amazon Try Before You Buy was a Prime-only, fashion-specific home trial: up to six eligible items, seven days after delivery, and no charge for pieces returned under the program. Amazon ended it, with January 31, 2025 reported as the final ordering date. Today, a shopper must rely on ordinary listing-specific return terms and verify the marketplace, seller, fulfillment method, return window, shipping cost, and eligibility before buying.
