Short version: Amazon ended the Do Not Send Voice Recordings option on March 28, 2025. That did not newly force every Echo owner to share every sound in the room. The change affected a narrow group of U.S. customers using English on three devices, while most Alexa requests already depended on Amazon’s cloud. You can still control recording retention, Voice ID, and the microphone—but only muting or unplugging the Echo prevents a newly activated request from being sent.

What Amazon changed on March 28, 2025

Amazon discontinued Do Not Send Voice Recordings, a setting that allowed limited local processing on the Echo Dot (4th Gen), Echo Show 10, and Echo Show 15. The option was available to U.S. customers whose Alexa service was set to English; it was never a universal feature across the Echo range. Contemporary reports put usage below 0.03% of Echo owners, based on Amazon’s statement rather than an independently audited count. See the contemporaneous coverage from AppleInsider, ZDNET, and The Register.

Amazon said newer generative-AI Alexa capabilities require secure cloud processing, including the Alexa+ experience and related personalization. That is Amazon’s stated rationale; it does not independently prove that every Echo needs cloud AI, nor does the available reporting establish that Amazon removed the setting to train models on every customer recording. The original reporting is also available from The Verge and Ars Technica.

This was a product-policy change, not a government requirement. “Mandatory” is accurate only in the limited sense that activated Alexa requests on the affected devices no longer had that local-processing choice.

Transmission, retention, and the microphone are different controls

The most important distinction is whether audio is sent to Amazon, whether an audio copy is retained, and whether the Echo is listening for a wake word at all.

Setting or action Audio sent to Amazon? Audio saved? Voice ID Alexa operation
Normal Alexa settings Yes, after activation Depends on account settings Generally available Works normally
Don’t save recordings Yes Amazon says the audio is not retained after processing Unavailable or limited Basic requests continue, with reduced personalization
Microphone muted No newly activated request No new request audio No new voice interaction Voice control stops
Device unplugged No newly activated request No new request audio Unavailable Unavailable

This is a conceptual comparison. Exact behavior can vary by device, account, feature, third-party skill, and Amazon policy.

“Don’t save recordings” does not mean “don’t send”

With Don’t save recordings, an activated request can still travel to Amazon’s cloud, be converted to text, and be processed before the audio recording is deleted according to Amazon’s description. Transcripts, metadata, account identifiers, logs, and information supplied to a third-party skill may be handled separately. Do not interpret audio deletion as proof that every associated record disappears immediately.

Muting is the clearest prevention

Pressing the physical microphone button prevents the Echo from responding to its wake word until you turn the microphone back on. Unplugging it provides the same protection but also removes all functionality. Echo devices are designed to wait for a wake word or physical activation before streaming a request; Amazon’s developer guidance says the device should make microphone status and attention states clear: Alexa privacy and security guidance.

What Voice ID does—and why the setting matters

Voice ID is separate from ordinary recording history. Amazon says it creates an acoustic model from characteristics of a user’s voice, allowing supported Alexa experiences to distinguish household members. It can personalize names, reminders, calendars, music, and other account-linked responses.

Users who keep Don’t save recordings may be unable to create Voice ID or lose Voice ID-dependent personalization. The Echo is not necessarily unusable: ordinary functions can remain available, but responses that depend on identifying a particular person may not work. Amazon’s terms describe cloud processing and Voice ID at Amazon’s Alexa terms.

Even the former local-processing mode was not complete device-side privacy. Reporting indicated that text transcripts could still be sent, calls and messages could require cloud transmission, and Voice ID enrollment required sharing voice recordings. Local processing reduced some audio transmission; it did not create an entirely offline assistant.

What Amazon can receive from an Alexa request

When Alexa is activated, the request audio is sent to Amazon to provide the service. Depending on what you ask for, processing can also involve a transcript, account information, device identifiers, operational logs, and data needed by a third-party skill. Amazon’s terms say Alexa interactions are processed in the cloud to respond, provide functionality, personalize experiences, and improve services.

That does not mean an Echo continuously uploads every conversation in the room. False wake-word activations can nevertheless create unintended entries. Review Voice History to check for accidental activations, especially if a household includes children or sensitive conversations.

How to review or delete Alexa data

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Open More.
  3. Select Alexa Privacy.
  4. Open Voice History to review and delete individual or available groups of requests.
  5. Look for Manage Your Alexa Data, retention controls, or similarly named options.
  6. Review Voice ID profiles separately if you want to remove a voice model or stop using personalization.

Amazon can change menu names and locations, so use the equivalent privacy controls shown in your app version. Amazon’s consumer guidance directs users to Alexa privacy settings for reviewing and deleting requests: Amazon Alexa privacy messaging. Deleting an audio recording should not be described as erasing every transcript, metadata record, account log, or third-party copy.

Ways to reduce or stop voice-data exposure

Keep Alexa, but reduce retention

Choose Don’t save recordings if your priority is limiting retained audio and you accept that requests still go to the cloud. Expect Voice ID and some personalized functions to be unavailable or impaired.

Disable Voice ID

Remove or avoid Voice ID if you do not want a persistent acoustic voice model. This affects personalization separately from ordinary Voice History controls.

Mute or unplug the device

Use the microphone button during private conversations, or unplug the Echo in bedrooms, consultation rooms, workplaces, or other areas where confidential speech is routine. Voice control will not work while the microphone is off.

Replace the Echo only for a clear reason

A newer Echo is unlikely to restore the discontinued local-processing option; the issue concerns Amazon’s service architecture, not simply old hardware. Alternatives such as Apple HomePod, Google Home, or Home Assistant may fit different privacy or automation needs, but none should be assumed to be fully local or automatically more private. Check the exact model, cloud features, account links, and retention policy before switching: Apple HomePod, Google connected home, and Home Assistant.

For basic control without a conversational assistant, physical switches, timers, motion sensors, buttons, and local smart-home automations can avoid routine voice transmission. They cannot replace cloud-based questions, dictation, calling, or conversational AI.

Alexa+ and the cloud trade-off

Amazon’s current Alexa+ page presents the service as available across Echo, Fire TV, the Alexa app, and the web, and says it is free with Prime. Eligibility, regional rollout, device compatibility, and plan terms can vary; check the current official page at echo.amazon.com/about (or alexa.amazon.com/about).

Alexa+ may be attractive if you already use Prime and want conversational answers and continuity across Amazon devices. It is a poor fit if your non-negotiable requirement is that activated voice requests stay on the device. Do not buy an Echo on the assumption that a newer model restores local voice processing.

Bottom line for Echo owners

Amazon removed a meaningful local-processing privacy option on March 28, 2025, but the change was narrow and is now historical. It affected three supported devices and a limited U.S./English user group—not every Echo owner—and it did not turn an Echo into a device that records everything in the room. Today, ordinary activated requests generally use Amazon’s cloud. Choose among cloud processing with retention controls, a muted or unplugged microphone, or a different technology based on whether functionality or minimizing voice transmission matters more to you.
