Amazon ended its website option for downloading purchased Kindle books to a computer and transferring them to a Kindle by USB on February 26, 2025. Books downloaded before that date remain readable. The change does not disable USB connections altogether: you can still transfer supported personal files, while Amazon-purchased books must use other supported routes.
What Amazon removed—and what it did not
The discontinued feature was called “Download and Transfer via USB” in Amazon’s Manage Your Content and Devices page. It let customers download purchased Kindle content to a computer for a USB transfer to a Kindle. An Amazon staff moderator confirmed that the page no longer supports that workflow, and Amazon’s customer notice set February 26, 2025, as the start date for the change. Amazon’s notice says books already downloaded to a Kindle remain readable.

This is not a ban on plugging a Kindle into a computer. Amazon still documents USB transfers for supported files, but that capability is separate from downloading purchased Kindle books through the former website option. A cable cannot restore the removed feature.
Ways to read or deliver Amazon-purchased books now
| Option | Best for | Connection and requirements |

Web uploads have a 200 MB maximum document size, according to Amazon’s current help page. Send to Kindle help |
For Deliver to Device, open Manage Your Content and Devices, find the title, choose its delivery option, and select a supported device. Menu labels and availability may vary by account and device.

Can you still transfer your own PDF or EPUB over USB?
Yes, USB remains useful for personal files and supported manual transfers. Amazon’s help page continues to describe connecting a Kindle to a computer and transferring files. The exact file types and process depend on the Kindle model and the file; this does not provide a way to copy a DRM-protected Amazon book from a computer. Amazon’s USB transfer guidance has model-specific requirements.
Newer devices have an additional software requirement. Amazon says Kindle Scribe and Kindle devices released in 2024 require a separate application, such as Send to Kindle for Mac, for USB file transfers. For ordinary document delivery, Amazon recommends wireless Send to Kindle. A USB cable is therefore useful only when the device and transfer workflow support it.

Exception: downloads for DRM-free Kindle books
Amazon’s KDP documentation says that, effective January 20, 2026, readers can download EPUB and PDF files of DRM-free books from Manage Your Content and Devices. This is a distinct download path for DRM-free titles, not a return of the former USB download option for all purchased Kindle books. Amazon says DRM-protected books remain restricted to Kindle apps and devices; the EPUB/PDF access rule applies to future download access. Amazon KDP’s documentation explains the rule.

Amazon says support for the legacy Kindle app, previously called Kindle for PC, ended June 30, 2026, and directs users to the new Kindle for Windows app. Amazon also says sync backs up reading position, notes, and highlights to its servers. This desktop-app change is separate from the 2025 removal of Download and Transfer via USB.
