Several Seattle-area technology organizations reported personnel changes on or around May 22, 2025. Impinj’s COO Hussein Mecklai left the company, Amazon leaders Christopher Niederman and Mike Lavin announced different kinds of departures, Brinc Drones’ Andrew Coté joined Forterra, and USAFacts appointed Megan Winfield as CTO. These were separate reports, not one coordinated announcement, and the available coverage does not establish the individuals’ employment status in 2026.

Impinj’s COO Hussein Mecklai leaves

Impinj disclosed Hussein Mecklai’s departure from the chief operating officer role in a regulatory filing, according to GeekWire’s May 22, 2025 report. Mecklai joined the RFID technology company in 2018 and became COO in 2022.

The cited coverage did not identify a reason for the departure, characterize it as a termination or retirement, or name an interim or permanent replacement. It also noted that Impinj chief revenue officer Jeff Dossett had retired in February 2025. Those are separate personnel events; the available information does not establish a broader restructuring or performance-related explanation.

Impinj develops radio-frequency identification products and systems used to identify and track tagged objects. Mecklai’s departure therefore affected an important operating role, but the filing and contemporaneous report did not provide a succession plan.

Amazon had two different leadership transitions

Christopher Niederman planned a break before his next role

Christopher Niederman was leaving Amazon after 11 years as managing director of AWS Industries and Solutions. He said he planned to spend time with family and travel to Italy before taking another senior leadership position, although the next employer or role was not identified in the report.

Niederman’s announcement describes an open-ended executive transition, not an immediate appointment elsewhere. His AWS position should not be conflated with Amazon’s top corporate leadership.

Lavin said he wanted to focus on family, new interests and opportunities to give back. This was reported as a retirement rather than a move to another employer, and it should not be presented as a layoff or evidence of an Amazon-wide leadership crisis.

Andrew Coté moves from Brinc Drones to Forterra

Andrew Coté left Brinc Drones after four years as vice president of strategy and growth to become a senior vice president at Forterra, a Maryland-based defense and space manufacturing company.

The timing came after Brinc announced $75 million in new funding and a strategic alliance with Motorola Solutions in April 2025. The funding amount refers to a company financing announcement, not a valuation or acquisition price. The available report does not say whether Coté’s departure was planned before that announcement, whether Brinc named a successor, or what responsibilities he assumed at Forterra.

USAFacts appoints Megan Winfield as CTO

In a separate GeekWire article published later on May 22, 2025, USAFacts announced Megan Winfield as its chief technology officer. GeekWire’s listing shows the USAFacts announcement and the Impinj, Amazon and Brinc roundup as separate stories published that day (listing).

Winfield relocated to Bellevue from Lexington, Kentucky, after nearly three years as CTO of Campspot. Earlier, she spent more than seven years at Hilton in software engineering and digital leadership roles.

At USAFacts, Winfield was expected to lead engineering and join the organization’s leadership team. She described access to transparent, “non-biased” data as a critical public need and pointed to artificial intelligence and large-scale data processing as technology opportunities. That language reflects Winfield’s and USAFacts’ stated mission, not an independently established finding about bias.

USAFacts’ technology and data mission

USAFacts is a nonpartisan nonprofit founded by former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and launched in 2017. It presents government data on topics including the economy, immigration, crime and public finances. The May 2025 report said the organization drew from roughly 100 government databases and had about 47 employees at that time; those figures should be treated as historical, not current.

What the moves show—and what they do not

Taken together, the announcements illustrate several common career patterns in the Pacific Northwest technology market: a COO departure without a disclosed successor, a senior AWS leader taking time before a next role, a long-serving marketing leader retiring, a cross-sector move from an autonomous-systems company to defense manufacturing, and an external CTO appointment at a data-focused nonprofit.

They do not, on the available evidence, establish a single regional wave of layoffs, executive turmoil or strategic failure. Each move involved a different organization and circumstance, and later employment outcomes were not verified by the May 2025 reports.
