Choose the Google TV Streamer if you want a set-top box, built-in gigabit Ethernet, 32 GB of storage, and Google Home, Matter, or Thread features. Choose the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023) if you want the smallest installation, Wi-Fi 6E, and the Alexa-oriented Fire TV platform. Neither device is an established real-world speed winner: the available evidence is a specification comparison, not hands-on testing. Both list 4K HDR output, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos, so the deciding factors are networking, storage, physical design, ecosystem, and the current price where you live.
Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max vs. Google TV Streamer at a glance
These are not identical designs. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max is an HDMI stick that hangs behind the television. The Google TV Streamer is a small box that sits near the television and connects with an HDMI cable. That physical difference affects cable management, Ethernet options, and how easily you can move the device between screens.

The numbers describe capability, not guaranteed viewing quality. A title must be offered in the relevant format by the streaming service, the app must support it on that device, and your television and audio equipment must also be compatible.

What both devices can play
Both manufacturers list 4K HDR output, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max specification also lists HDR10+ and HLG. Google lists Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG, with output up to 4K HDR at 60 frames per second. Those lists tell you what the hardware and software are designed to handle; they do not mean every app, subscription tier, movie, television, or soundbar will expose every format.

Why format support does not settle the decision
If your television accepts Dolby Vision and your preferred service supplies a Dolby Vision stream, either device has the relevant capability. If the television is limited to HDR10, buying a player that lists additional formats will not make that panel display them. The same principle applies to Atmos: the app, title, subscription, television passthrough, and receiver or soundbar all matter.
Because both products cover the headline 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, and Atmos requirements, selecting one solely for the format checklist leaves important practical differences unresolved. Network design, available storage, installation space, remote ecosystem, and local pricing are more useful tie-breakers.
Networking: Wi-Fi 6E versus built-in gigabit Ethernet
When the Fire TV Stick’s Wi-Fi 6E matters
The second-generation 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K Max supports Wi-Fi 6E across 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands. Wi-Fi 6E can be attractive if your router also supports 6 GHz and the television is within suitable range of that network. The specification alone does not promise a particular streaming speed, lower buffering, or a faster interface; those outcomes depend on your router, interference, distance, internet connection, and household traffic.
If your existing router has only Wi-Fi 5 or earlier, the stick cannot create a 6 GHz network by itself. It will still connect using a compatible band, but the headline 6E feature is most relevant to a household that already has, or plans to install, a 6E-capable router.
When Google’s Ethernet port is the better fit
The Google TV Streamer has a built-in Ethernet port rated at 10/100/1000 Mbps. A wired connection can simplify a setup where the television is close to a router, network switch, or structured home wiring. You do not need a separate Ethernet dongle for the Google device.

- Wi-Fi 6 support - Enjoy smooth 4K streaming, even when other devices are connected to your router.
The Fire TV Stick 4K Max supports Ethernet at 10/100 Mbps only through an external dongle. That adds an accessory, another connection, and a place to route the cable. It may be useful when wireless reception is poor, but it is less integrated than the Google box’s port and has a lower listed link rate.
How to choose your network path
- Choose the Fire TV Stick’s wireless design when the television is away from a wired outlet and you have a Wi-Fi 6E router you can actually use.
- Choose Google’s box when the television is near Ethernet wiring, when you prefer a cable over radio networking, or when you want the port built into the device.
- Do not treat the 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet rating as a measured streaming speed. It is the port’s listed link capability, not a test result for an internet service or an app.
Storage and memory: 16 GB versus 32 GB and 4 GB
Amazon lists 16 GB of storage for the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023). Google lists 32 GB of storage and 4 GB of memory for the Google TV Streamer. The Google box therefore has twice the listed storage and the only explicitly stated memory capacity in this comparison.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Storage is used by the operating system, installed applications, updates, and app data, so the advertised capacity is not the same as free space on first setup. More storage can give a box more room for a larger app library and future updates, but the specification does not establish how much space either device leaves available to the owner or how either platform manages it.
Memory figures also should not be converted into a claim that Google’s interface is faster. RAM capacity, processor design, software optimization, animation, advertising, and app behavior all influence the experience. No comparable performance test was conducted for these products.
Physical design and installation
Fire TV Stick 4K Max: the compact option
The Fire TV Stick 4K Max is designed to plug directly into an HDMI input, making it practical when you want the player hidden behind the television or when cabinet space is limited. Its stick form can also be convenient for moving between televisions, provided each screen has a suitable HDMI input and you can supply power as required by the device.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
Its compactness comes with trade-offs. Wired networking requires the applicable external Ethernet dongle, and the space around a television’s HDMI ports can affect how comfortably the stick fits. Check the physical clearance behind a wall-mounted screen or inside a tightly packed cabinet before buying accessories.

The Google TV Streamer is a box rather than an HDMI stick. Google specifies HDMI 2.1 and says a certified HDMI 2.1 cable is required and sold separately. Plan for a cable run from the box to the television, a nearby power connection, and enough room for the box and any Ethernet cable.
The box format is useful if you want a stable location beside a router or network switch, or if you prefer ports that are easier to access than a device hanging behind the panel. It is less convenient than a stick when the television has no shelf or accessible surface.
Basic setup sequence
- Confirm that the television has an available HDMI input and supports the resolution and HDR formats you intend to use.
- For the Fire TV Stick, insert the stick into the HDMI input and arrange its power connection according to the included hardware. For Google TV Streamer, place the box near the television, connect a certified HDMI 2.1 cable, and connect power.
- Choose wireless networking during setup, or connect Ethernet if you are using the Fire TV Stick’s external dongle or the Google box’s built-in port.
- Complete the on-screen account, network, and software setup prompts, then install only the streaming applications you need.
- Play a known 4K HDR title and check the television’s information panel. If the expected format does not appear, verify the title, app, subscription, television setting, and audio-video chain before blaming the player.
The exact setup screens can change with Fire OS, Android TV OS, app versions, and region. The hardware connection and compatibility checks above are the durable parts of the process.
Fire TV and Google TV ecosystems
Fire TV, Alexa, and Ambient Experience
The Fire TV Stick 4K Max runs Fire OS 8 and is aimed at the Alexa-oriented Fire TV ecosystem. Amazon’s developer overview calls this model its most powerful streaming stick with Wi-Fi 6E support and Ambient Experience. That is Amazon’s product description, not an independent benchmark, so it should not be read as proof of faster menus or playback than Google’s device.

Choose this platform when your household already uses Alexa-oriented controls and Fire TV interfaces, or when the stick form is more important than a built-in wired port. The cited specifications identify Bluetooth 5.2 plus BLE, which supports the device’s wireless accessory connectivity.
Google TV, Google Home, Matter, and Thread
The Google TV Streamer runs Android TV OS and adds features beyond video playback. Google documents a customizable remote button, Find My Remote, Google Home and Matter hub features, and a Thread border router. These are meaningful reasons to choose the box if it will sit in a Google Home-centered household or participate in compatible smart-home routines.
Thread and Matter support describe the device’s role in a compatible smart-home network; they do not make every accessory interoperable. Check that your intended devices support the relevant standard and that your home account and network are configured for it.
Google lists Bluetooth 5.1, HDMI 2.1, USB-C, and the built-in Ethernet port. The presence of a port or standard does not by itself establish support for every peripheral, storage device, controller, or accessory you may want to connect.

Buy the Google TV Streamer when these priorities match
- You want a box rather than a device hanging from the HDMI port.

- You value 32 GB of listed storage and 4 GB of listed memory.
- Your household uses Google TV, Google Home, Matter, or Thread features.
- You want a customizable remote button and Find My Remote.
This is a feature-match recommendation, not a claim that the Streamer is faster in a controlled test.

Buy the Fire TV Stick 4K Max when these priorities match
- You want the smallest, easiest-to-hide stick form.
- You have a Wi-Fi 6E router and want a player that supports 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz wireless bands.
- You prefer the Alexa-oriented Fire TV ecosystem and Fire OS 8.
- You may need to move the player between televisions and do not want to place a box on a shelf.
- You are comfortable adding the applicable external Ethernet dongle if wireless networking is unsuitable.
Make sure the listing is specifically the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen), released in 2023. Earlier or later Fire TV products can have different specifications, and the Max name alone is not enough to identify this model.
If your only requirement is 4K HDR streaming
Both devices list the core capabilities most buyers mean by 4K streaming: 4K HDR output, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. Use your television and audio equipment as the first compatibility check, then choose based on the installation, network, ecosystem, and storage differences described above. Do not pay a premium solely for a format that your television, service, or favorite titles cannot deliver.
Price and value in October 2026
Google’s comparison page showed a US-model price of $99.99 when it was accessed. That figure is a listed price from the page, not a guarantee of the current sale price, availability, taxes, or pricing in another country. The cited specification set does not establish a comparable current price for the Fire TV Stick 4K Max.
For that reason, a timeless price winner cannot be stated. Check the exact model name, seller, local currency, delivery cost, warranty terms, and current discount for both devices before deciding. A sale can reverse the value calculation, especially when the Google box also requires a separately sold certified HDMI 2.1 cable and the Fire stick may need an Ethernet dongle for a wired setup.
Important limitations before you decide
- No independent speed result: the published material provides specifications and vendor descriptions, not a matched test of startup time, app launch speed, buffering, picture quality, advertising load, or long-term reliability.
- Format availability varies: a listed HDR or audio format still depends on the television, receiver or soundbar, app, service plan, and specific title.
- Wireless conditions vary: Wi-Fi 6E is useful only when your router and location make the 6 GHz band practical; Wi-Fi 5 can still be adequate for many homes, but the specification alone cannot predict your result.
- Accessories affect the total setup: Google identifies a certified HDMI 2.1 cable as sold separately, while Amazon identifies Ethernet through an external dongle.
- Software changes: prices, stock, remote functions, app support, and operating-system behavior can change after the official pages were accessed on October 13, 2026.
Bottom line
For a wired, expandable set-top-box setup with Google smart-home features, choose the Google TV Streamer. For a compact HDMI stick with Wi-Fi 6E and Alexa-oriented Fire TV, choose the second-generation 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K Max. When both fit, compare the current local prices and required accessories rather than assuming one is universally faster or better.
