Amazon Fire TV privacy settings to change before you start streaming

By Freedom251 Team · · 8 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you stream, open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings on each Fire TV device and review the controls for Device Usage Data, Collect App Usage Data, and Interest-based Ads. If you use a Fire TV smart TV with an antenna, check the over-the-air viewing-data option. If your device has a Continue Watching row, also open Manage Sharing From Apps.

These switches have different jobs. They can limit Amazon’s operating-system usage processing, Amazon’s collection of third-party-app open/close and duration information, advertising-ID-based interest targeting, antenna viewing information, and sharing of viewing details between participating apps. They do not create one universal “stop all data collection” mode: device features, Amazon services, and individual streaming apps can have separate processing and privacy controls.

Which Fire TV settings should you change first?

Use this order if you want a fast privacy review before watching:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn off Device Usage Data if you do not want Fire TV operating-system usage data used for customized marketing offers and product improvement.
  2. Turn off Collect App Usage Data if you do not want Amazon collecting information about when third-party apps open, close, and how long they are used.
  3. Turn off Interest-based Ads to tell apps that use Fire TV’s advertising ID not to use that identifier for advertising profiles or interest-based targeting on the device.
  4. On a Fire TV smart TV connected to an antenna, opt out of over-the-air viewing information if you do not want Amazon receiving that viewing data.
  5. On a device with a Continue Watching row, review Manage Sharing From Apps and disable app-sharing or cross-device syncing that you do not need.

Amazon describes these settings as device-specific. If you have a television plus one or more Fire TV sticks or boxes, repeat the review on every device.

How the privacy controls differ

The menu puts several controls together, but each covers a different data type and recipient. Use the table to decide which switches matter for your setup.

Control Data covered Primary recipient or use Where it applies
Device Usage Data Fire TV operating-system and feature use, such as home-screen navigation, device settings, and opening or closing apps Amazon processing for customized marketing offers and product improvement Supported Fire TV products; review separately on each device
Collect App Usage Data When third-party apps open, close, and how long they are used Amazon collection of app-usage information Fire TV products; separate from an app’s own privacy practices
Interest-based Ads Use of a resettable advertising ID by apps on certain Amazon devices Apps using the ID for advertising profiles and interest-based ads Devices and apps that support the advertising-ID control
Over-the-air Viewing Data Content received through an antenna connected directly to a Fire TV smart TV Amazon information about antenna viewing Supported Fire TV smart TVs, not every external Fire TV device
Manage Sharing From Apps App viewing and content information, plus viewing-activity synchronization Participating apps and, when enabled, other Fire TV devices Devices that show a Continue Watching row

Change Device Usage Data

This is the operating-system-level control. Amazon says turning it off stops processing of operating-system device-usage data for customized marketing offers and product improvement. It is not a promise that every Fire TV process stops.

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Choose Privacy Settings.
  4. Open Device Usage Data and switch the setting off. Confirm if Fire TV asks.

Amazon says some processing continues when it is needed to provide device features, including Parental Controls and the Recents row. Marketing offers may still appear, but they can be less relevant. Interest-based advertising is controlled separately, so changing this switch does not also change the advertising-ID setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this option for Fire TV’s own operating-system activity. It does not govern your use of Amazon services such as Prime Video, and it does not replace the privacy controls offered by individual streaming apps.

Change Collect App Usage Data

This setting addresses Amazon’s collection of information about third-party apps on Fire TV Products: specifically, when an app is opened, when it is closed, and the duration of use.

  1. Open Settings on the Fire TV home screen.
  2. Go to Preferences > Privacy Settings.
  3. Select Collect App Usage Data.
  4. Switch the control off and accept the confirmation, if shown.

It is separate from Device Usage Data. Turning it off does not automatically change what a streaming provider collects inside its own app. For example, an app may still have its own account, diagnostics, personalization, or viewing-history controls. Check that provider’s privacy menu or account page for those choices.

Limit Interest-based Ads

Fire TV’s Interest-based Ads control concerns an advertising ID. Amazon describes that ID as a resettable identifier made available to apps on certain Amazon devices for advertising and analytics. The setting tells apps using the ID not to use it to build advertising profiles or target you with interest-based ads on the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings.
  2. Open Interest-based Ads.
  3. Turn the setting off and confirm when prompted.

This does not mean every advertisement disappears. An app can still show contextual or service-related advertising, and turning off this option is not a blanket ban on all advertising-related data handling. It specifically changes how participating apps are instructed to use the advertising ID for interest-based profiling and targeting.

Opt out of over-the-air viewing data on a Fire TV smart TV

If you watch broadcast channels through an antenna plugged directly into a Fire TV smart TV, Amazon lists a separate opt-out for information about that over-the-air content. The option is not documented as a universal setting on every Fire TV Stick, box, or other external streaming device.

  1. On the Fire TV smart TV, open Settings.
  2. Select Preferences, then Privacy Settings.
  3. Look for the over-the-air viewing-information option and choose the opt-out.
  4. Read the confirmation text before accepting it; the wording can identify the antenna-viewing data covered by the switch.

If you do not see this control, your device may not be a supported Fire TV smart TV, or it may not expose the option in the current interface. Do not treat its absence on a streaming stick as evidence that antenna viewing is being shared; the documented control is tied to supported smart TVs.

Review Manage Sharing From Apps

Manage Sharing From Apps is documented for Fire TV devices that have a Continue Watching row. It handles viewing and content information shared by participating apps, rather than the operating-system usage data covered by the first two switches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings.
  2. Select Manage Sharing From Apps.
  3. Review the participating-app list and change apps individually if you want a selective setup.
  4. Review the control for sharing app viewing and content information across supported apps.
  5. Review the option to stop syncing viewing activity across Fire TV devices, and disable it if you do not want activity carried between devices.

The individual-app controls let you avoid an all-or-nothing choice. You might allow sharing for an app whose Continue Watching integration you use while blocking another app. Disabling cross-device synchronization is a separate decision from allowing one app to share information with other supported apps on the same device.

Content Personalization is a separate, opt-in feature

Amazon’s developer documentation describes Content Personalization as opt-in. When enabled, shared viewing activity and watchlist data can support features such as resuming playback and making recommendations. That description is different from the privacy switches that opt out of operating-system usage processing, app-usage collection, or advertising-ID targeting.

If you want fewer recommendations or less resume functionality, inspect the personalization choice presented by Fire TV or the relevant app. Do not assume that switching off Device Usage Data also withdraws content-personalization consent; the controls serve different purposes.

What these settings do not cover

  • Amazon services: Use of services such as Prime Video can involve service-specific data processing outside the Device Usage Data switch.
  • Third-party app collection: Apps and services may collect information under their own privacy notices and account settings. Fire TV’s menu cannot rewrite those policies.
  • Every type of advertising: Interest-based Ads changes use of the advertising ID for profiling and targeting; it does not guarantee an ad-free interface or app.
  • Every Fire TV model: Amazon does not publish one complete model-by-model menu map in the referenced help material. Labels and availability can differ by device and software version.
  • Other household devices: A change on one Fire TV does not automatically apply to another. Amazon’s FAQ states that these settings are device-specific.

A sensible privacy setup sequence

For a household with several Fire TV products, use this repeatable process rather than assuming one account-level switch controls everything:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pick one device and note whether it is a Fire TV smart TV or an external Fire TV stick or box.
  2. Open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings and record which controls are actually present.
  3. Set Device Usage Data, Collect App Usage Data, and Interest-based Ads according to your preferences.
  4. If the device is a smart TV with a directly connected antenna, check the over-the-air viewing-data opt-out.
  5. If a Continue Watching row appears, open Manage Sharing From Apps and review both participating apps and cross-device syncing.
  6. Repeat the process on every other Fire TV device in the home.
  7. Open the privacy or account settings inside each streaming app you use, because those controls govern app-specific collection.

What to check if a setting is missing or seems ineffective

The menu label is different

Amazon’s documented path is Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings, but interface labels can vary by model and software version. Look for the closest equivalent under Preferences rather than assuming the control does not exist. Avoid following a menu path from a different device family without checking the wording on your screen.

Manage Sharing From Apps is not listed

Check whether the device has a Continue Watching row. Amazon documents this sharing menu for devices with that feature; it is not presented as universal across all Fire TV products.

You still see recommendations or ads

That result is expected after changing only one switch. Recommendations can use content-personalization choices or an app’s own account data, while advertisements can be contextual or governed by a service’s separate systems. Recheck the relevant control instead of treating the result as proof that the Fire TV setting failed.

An app still shows viewing history

Collect App Usage Data concerns Amazon’s information about app opening, closing, and duration. It does not erase an app’s own viewing history. Use the app’s privacy, history, or account controls for that record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A second Fire TV behaves differently

Review it independently. Settings are device-specific, so a choice made on one television or stick should not be assumed to have propagated to another.

Final pre-streaming checklist

  • Device Usage Data reviewed and set intentionally.
  • Collect App Usage Data reviewed separately.
  • Interest-based Ads reviewed separately from both usage controls.
  • Over-the-air viewing-data opt-out checked when using a supported Fire TV smart TV with an antenna.
  • Manage Sharing From Apps reviewed when Continue Watching is available.
  • Content Personalization choice understood as a separate opt-in feature.
  • Privacy settings inside each streaming app reviewed.
  • Every Fire TV device in the household checked.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
