Choose an Echo Show if you want Alexa to be a shared, always-visible household screen. It is built for glanceable weather, recipes, video, calls and compatible camera feeds. Choose a Fire tablet if you also need a general-purpose tablet. Fire tablets can run Alexa hands-free on supported generations, but hands-free Alexa does not mean the tablet supports Show Mode.
The deciding detail is the exact generation and region. Amazon lists Fire HD 10 (13th Generation) for Alexa hands-free use, yet excludes it from the current Show Mode compatibility list. Check the tables below before buying or assuming that a tablet can replace an Echo Show.

The short answer
An Echo Show is the better Alexa device for a kitchen counter, family room or bedside table where people need information at a glance and want a device that is ready to answer without being picked up. A Fire tablet is the better choice when Alexa is only one job among many: browsing, reading, streaming, email, games and other tablet apps.
There is one important exception to the simple comparison. Selected older Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 generations can enter Show Mode, which presents an Echo Show-style interface. Many newer tablets cannot. Alexa hands-free support and Show Mode are separate capabilities maintained on separate Amazon compatibility lists.

What “better for Alexa” actually involves
Alexa hardware decisions usually combine five different needs:
- Voice access: Can the device respond to the wake word while you are across the room?
- Persistent visuals: Does it keep useful cards, clocks or photos visible without opening an app?
- Household functions: Will it handle recipes, timers, calls and camera views from a common screen?
- Tablet work: Can you carry it around and use ordinary Android-based tablet apps?
- Smart-home connectivity: Does the exact model contain the radio or hub needed by your devices?
Echo Show is optimized for the first three. A Fire tablet is optimized for the fourth and can cover the first only on supported models and settings. Smart-home protocol support must be checked separately for either category.
Alexa hands-free support on Fire tablets
Amazon’s Alexa hands-free support list includes the following generations. Hands-free means you can speak to Alexa without tapping the Alexa button after enabling the feature; it does not certify Show Mode.

On a listed tablet, Amazon says to enable or disable hands-free from the Alexa Hands-Free icon in the home-screen quick settings. Microphone permissions, mute controls, software state and regional availability can still affect behavior.
Show Mode compatibility is a different list
Show Mode switches a compatible Fire tablet between the normal tablet interface and an Echo Show-style interface. Amazon’s UK support page describes it as turning a compatible tablet into a visual display that engages with Alexa from across the room. The compatibility list is much narrower than the hands-free list and includes minimum software versions.

Amazon’s same page says Show Mode is not compatible with Fire 7 (7th, 9th or 12th generations), Fire HD 8 (12th generation), Fire Max 11 (13th generation) or Fire HD 10 (13th generation). Therefore, the current Fire HD 10 (13th Generation) can be a useful hands-free Alexa tablet while still lacking the Echo Show-style mode many buyers expect.
On a compatible model, Amazon documents three ways to enter Show Mode: use the quick-settings toggle, select it in the Alexa app, or ask Alexa to turn Show Mode on. Availability can differ by country because the cited compatibility guidance is from Amazon UK; verify the support page for your market.

Why an Echo Show feels more like an Alexa appliance
Persistent, glanceable information
Echo Show devices are designed to keep Alexa-related information visible. Amazon describes weather, recipe instructions, video playback, video calls and viewing compatible security cameras or doorbells as core screen uses. You do not have to unlock a tablet or find the right app before asking for a timer or checking a camera.
Calls and camera views
An Echo Show can serve as a shared calling and monitoring point, but camera and calling capabilities vary by model and generation. Check the camera hardware, supported calling services and framing features for the exact model rather than assuming that every Show is identical.
Accessibility and touch alternatives
Amazon documents Tap to Alexa on supported Show devices for touch-based interaction, along with caption features. Amazon also describes an opt-in hand gesture for dismissing timers on Echo Show 8 (2nd generation) and Echo Show 10 (3rd generation). Those named-generation details should not be generalized to every Echo Show.

Purpose-built placement
The Show range includes models intended for different rooms. Amazon UK’s current device guide describes an Echo Show 8 with an 8-inch HD display and a 13-megapixel camera with auto-framing. Its Echo Show 10 description specifies a 10.1-inch HD screen that moves to stay in view. The guide describes Echo Show 15 as a wall-mountable Full HD display. These are UK descriptions and model-specific specifications, not universal specifications for every market.

General-purpose tablet use
A Fire tablet remains a portable computer. You can hold it for reading, carry it between rooms, watch video away from the charging point and use tablet applications that are outside Alexa’s household-display interface. Amazon does not present an Echo Show as a general-purpose tablet replacement.
Flexible positioning
You can use a tablet flat on a sofa, in a bag or on a stand, then switch back to normal tablet software. That flexibility is useful when the same person wants Alexa at breakfast and ordinary tablet functions later.
Show Mode when the generation qualifies
For the older generations in the compatibility table, Show Mode can provide an Echo Show-like interface while charging. Amazon’s developer documentation describes a Show Mode Charging Dock that props up a compatible tablet and defaults it to Show Mode while charging. The article is older, so treat it as an explanation of the accessory’s function, not confirmation of current stock or compatibility. Confirm the exact dock and tablet combination before purchase.
Smart-home hub support: verify the exact model
Screen type and product family do not tell you which smart-home radios are inside. Amazon’s Alexa FAQ explains that Zigbee devices can connect directly to Echo devices with built-in smart-home hubs and gives Echo Show 10 as an example. Other products may connect over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, or require setup through the Alexa app.

Do not infer that every Echo Show contains Zigbee, or that a Fire tablet can replace a hub simply because it runs Alexa. If your devices require Zigbee or another protocol, check the specification for the exact model and regional version before buying.

How to check a Fire tablet before buying
- Identify the generation. Open the tablet’s device information or check the model details on its packaging and account page. “Fire HD 10” alone is not precise enough.
- Check hands-free eligibility. Match the generation against the hands-free table. If it is absent, plan to use the on-screen Alexa control instead of a wake word.
- Check Show Mode separately. Match the generation and required Fire OS version against the Show Mode table. Do not substitute hands-free eligibility for this check.
- Update Fire OS. Install available updates, then confirm the device meets or exceeds the listed minimum version for Show Mode.
- Check your region. The cited Show Mode list is Amazon UK guidance. Look for the equivalent support page and feature availability in your country.
- Test the microphone and controls. Make sure the microphone is not muted and that the Alexa Hands-Free toggle appears in quick settings.
How to set up Alexa on a supported Fire tablet
- Connect the tablet to Wi-Fi and sign in to the Amazon account you use for Alexa.
- Install system updates and restart if the update process requests it.
- Open quick settings from the home screen and tap the Alexa Hands-Free icon.
- Allow microphone access when prompted, then test the wake word from the intended seating distance.
- If the model is on the Show Mode list, use the quick-settings Show Mode toggle, the Alexa app’s Show Mode control or a voice request to turn it on.
- Place the tablet where the microphone and screen remain unobstructed. A compatible charging dock can provide a more stable stand, but verify its model compatibility first.
How to choose among Echo Show models
For a compact counter or bedside location
Start with the smaller Show form factor and confirm the current generation’s screen, camera and auto-framing specifications. Amazon UK’s guide uses the Echo Show 8 as an 8-inch HD example with a 13-megapixel camera.
For a room where people move around
The Echo Show 10 description in Amazon UK’s guide specifies a 10.1-inch HD display that moves to stay in view. That moving-screen feature is model-specific; it is not a standard attribute of all Echo Shows.
For a shared wall dashboard
The Echo Show 15 is described by Amazon UK as a wall-mountable Full HD display. Confirm mounting requirements, regional configuration and the current generation before treating it as a permanent household dashboard.
For smart-home device pairing
Choose only after checking the protocol requirements of your accessories. If Zigbee is required, verify that the selected Echo includes the built-in hub in your market.

Privacy, placement and reliability considerations
- Microphone control: Both categories rely on microphones for wake-word operation. Use the physical mute control when you need the microphones disabled, and remember that a muted device cannot answer Alexa requests.
- Camera privacy: If you use video calls or camera viewing, place the device where the camera’s field of view is appropriate and use any available shutter or software control.
- Shared accounts: A kitchen or living-room Echo Show may expose calendars, shopping lists, photos or camera feeds to everyone who can address it. Configure household profiles and permissions deliberately.
- Network dependence: Alexa requests, cloud services, camera feeds and many smart-home commands depend on a working internet connection and compatible account setup.
- Screen visibility: Glare, distance and mounting height can make a tablet less useful as a glanceable display even when Show Mode works.
What about the reported 2026 Alexa Tablet line?
Reports dated around October 8, 2026, from Tom’s Guide and TechRadar describe a new Alexa Tablet family, including a 12 Pro and smaller 11- and 8-inch variants, and say Amazon is moving away from the Fire name. Those reports are secondary. No official Amazon product listing confirming the models, launch timing, Alexa capabilities or regional availability was verified for this comparison.
Until Amazon’s live product pages and support documentation confirm the lineup, use the published Fire hands-free and Show Mode lists for purchasing decisions. A reported name change does not establish compatibility, software support or a replacement for Echo Show hardware.
Bottom line
Buy an Echo Show when Alexa is the main purpose: a shared screen for recipes, timers, calls, weather and compatible camera views. Buy a Fire tablet when you need a portable, general-purpose tablet and will accept that Alexa may be an app or hands-free voice feature rather than a permanent household display.
