Short answer for U.S. shoppers: no retailer is the universal winner on both returns and clothing selection. Nordstrom’s stated free in-store and mail options are attractive when return convenience is your priority. ASOS and Zara publish clear windows but attach fees or route restrictions in some cases. Amazon.com requires the closest item-level check because its U.S. source is a general policy and marketplace sellers can set different terms. For selection, compare the exact brand, size, fit, style and price you need rather than assuming one store has the broadest useful assortment.
Policies apply to a specific country, order, seller and return route. Read the product page and the order’s return-by date before paying; a retailer’s headline policy is not a guarantee that every clothing listing qualifies.

Nordstrom’s U.S. page says mail returns are processed in 8–12 business days and refunds are expected 3–5 business days after processing. ASOS says it aims to issue a refund within 14 days after the warehouse receives the parcel. These are stated processing expectations, not guaranteed delivery or bank-posting times.

Why “free returns” is not a complete comparison
A return promise has at least six variables: country, retailer, seller, fulfillment method, item category and route. A marketplace listing may be sold by a retailer but shipped by an independent seller. A free store route may coexist with a paid courier route. A policy can also distinguish an unwanted item from a defective one, or a regular-price item from Final Sale merchandise.
Before comparing stores, identify which date starts the clock. ASOS uses delivery or collection for the period shown in its U.S. policy. Zara’s cited U.S. terms use shipment confirmation. Amazon.com’s general page directs you to the order-specific date rather than establishing one clothing-wide deadline. A purchase that arrives late can therefore have a different practical return window from an apparently similar order elsewhere.
Amazon Fashion in the United States
The U.S. Amazon source available for this comparison is the general Amazon Return Policy, not a fashion-specific guarantee. It says some returns can incur variable shipping fees based on factors such as size, weight and handling, and that returning an item to a third-party seller can involve additional fees. That evidence is not enough to promise a uniform U.S. apparel window or free return on every listing.
What to inspect on an Amazon clothing listing
- Read the seller and “Ships from” lines separately. A marketplace seller can control return handling even when the item appears in the same fashion search.
- Open the item’s returns information and record the displayed return-by date for your order, not just a generic help-page statement.
- Check whether the displayed fee applies only to a particular drop-off method or is tied to the seller’s instructions.
- For imported or Global Store purchases, read the distinct timing and cost language; those rules are not evidence of the ordinary U.S. apparel policy.
Amazon’s UK fashion help page is useful only as an example of why listing-level checking matters. It covers clothes, shoes, handbags, jewellery and watches, marks free-return eligibility on the product page and sends seller-fulfilled items back to the seller. It is UK-only and must not be used to promise the same window or fee treatment on Amazon.com.
Nordstrom in the United States
Nordstrom describes free returns in a U.S. store or by mail. The practical advantage is route choice: a shopper can avoid packaging and carrier travel by using a store, or mail an order when no nearby location is convenient. The policy also sets out the processing and refund expectations shown in the table.

Important limits
- Nordstrom says return decisions are handled case by case and that it cannot accommodate every return. Treat “free” as a cost statement for an eligible route, not as “anything can be returned indefinitely.”
- Orders made internationally through Borderfree or ESW use a different process and do not qualify for free returns or merchandise exchanges under the cited page.
- For a third-party seller product, the seller assigns a specific return-by date in order history. Use that date instead of assuming the standard Nordstrom treatment.
For a U.S. shopper who values a free mail option and a physical-store fallback, Nordstrom has the clearest stated route combination in this comparison. You still need to verify seller status and eligibility for the particular order.
ASOS in the United States
ASOS’s U.S. policy is more conditional than a simple “free returns” label. An unwanted item must be in original condition, cannot be marked Final Sale and is subject to Fair Use. Guest checkout returns have the fee shown in the table, while the policy’s refund target begins only after the warehouse receives the parcel.

- Do not remove or damage hygiene seals or labels on products for which those protections apply; the policy can exclude them once opened.
- Look for an ASOS Brand Partner designation. Partner merchandise can use the brand’s own return policy, so the seller’s instructions take precedence over a general ASOS assumption.
- Keep the dispatch receipt and tracking record. The stated refund target is measured from warehouse receipt, not from the day you hand over the parcel.
- If you checked out as a guest, include the stated fee in your cost calculation before deciding that a low-priced item is worth ordering for fit.
Zara in the United States
The cited Zara U.S. terms are a PDF dated September 20, 2024. They describe qualifying online purchases as returnable or exchangeable within the period shown in the table, provided the merchandise remains new, unworn, unwashed and unaltered with internal garment tags intact.
Route changes the price
A qualifying return at a U.S. Zara store is described as having no additional cost. Dropping the prepaid label at the courier location incurs a shipping fee. Select the route only after checking the current amount and the store’s eligibility; the dated PDF may not reflect a later amendment.
Because the available terms carry a 2024 date, verify the live U.S. conditions at checkout. Confirm the shipment-confirmation date, preserve every internal tag and avoid alterations until you are certain the item fits.

Which online clothing store is better for returns?
The answer depends on the inconvenience you are trying to avoid. Use this priority test instead of assigning one retailer a blanket ranking:

Selection: what can and cannot be established
There is no defensible “widest selection” winner from the available evidence. The sources do not provide comparable current inventory counts, category-breadth measurements, size-range audits or independent brand totals for Amazon, Nordstrom, ASOS and Zara.
Amazon is a marketplace that lists apparel from multiple sellers, while the other services are fashion-focused destinations. That structural difference does not prove that Amazon has more useful choices for your body, budget or style. A large search result can still have few options in your exact size, a long delivery estimate or return terms that make experimentation expensive.
Make selection measurable for your own purchase
Build a short comparison around the product you actually want:
- Brand: Is the label you trust available, and is it sold by the expected seller?
- Size and fit: Is your size in stock now, and does the page provide garment measurements, fit notes or a size chart?
- Style and category: Compare like with like—such as a linen shirt to another linen shirt—not a marketplace’s entire apparel search to a specialist’s curated category.
- Price after return friction: Include shipping, a route fee, a guest fee or a possible seller charge when the item is uncertain.
- Delivery: A theoretically available item is not useful if it arrives after the event for which you need it.
- Policy clarity: Prefer a listing that states the return-by date, seller, condition rules and route in plain language.

A step-by-step U.S. shopping workflow
- Write the non-negotiables. Note the required brand, garment type, size, fit, maximum delivered price and date you must have the item.
- Open the exact variant. Select size and color before reading the policy. A policy shown for one seller or variant may not govern another.
- Identify the seller and fulfillment. Record the seller name, who ships the parcel and whether the page labels the item as a partner, marketplace or Final Sale product.
- Locate the return-by date. Save the date displayed for the order. Also note whether the clock starts at delivery, collection or shipment confirmation.
- Price the return route. Record any guest, courier, seller or variable shipping charge and whether a free store route is realistically accessible.
- Check condition rules. Keep tags attached, leave hygiene seals intact and avoid washing, altering or wearing the garment outside a careful indoor fit check.
- Compare equivalent offers. Put the same brand, size and style into a small table across retailers. Include delivery date and return friction, not only the ticket price.
- Save evidence. Keep the order email, policy link, seller details and a screenshot or PDF of the listing terms in case the page changes.
- Plan the try-on. Set a calendar reminder for the earliest relevant deadline and leave enough time for the parcel to reach the correct warehouse or seller.
- Start the return through the supplied path. Use the retailer’s order page or the marketplace seller’s instructions; do not mail an item to an address found elsewhere.
Return troubleshooting
The label shows an unexpected charge
Recheck the route you selected. A paid courier option can coexist with a free store option, and a guest checkout or marketplace seller can add a separate deduction. Save the label screen and contact the party named in the order rather than assuming the charge is a system error.

The seller, not the retailer, is handling the return
Follow the seller-specific instructions and deadline in the order record. Marketplace and Brand Partner items are not automatically governed by the host retailer’s standard route. Keep tracking until the seller or warehouse confirms receipt.
The return is rejected for condition
Review whether the item was marked Final Sale, whether tags or hygiene seals were removed, and whether washing, alteration or visible wear violates the policy. Photograph the item and packaging before dispatch when the condition could be disputed.
The refund has not appeared
First verify carrier delivery and warehouse receipt. Then allow the policy’s stated processing target plus your bank or card issuer’s posting time. If the target has passed, provide the order number, tracking proof and return authorization to the retailer or seller.
The displayed date conflicts with the policy page
Use the order-specific date and ask customer service to clarify the conflict before sending the parcel. The listing, seller and route can control the applicable terms, while a general help page may describe a different category or country.

Do not plan a present-day apparel purchase around Amazon’s Try Before You Buy program. The Associated Press reported on January 13, 2025, that January 31, 2025 was the last day eligible customers could place orders. An Amazon spokesperson, quoted by the AP, said: “Given the combination of Try Before You Buy only scaling to a limited number of items and customers increasingly using our new AI-powered features like virtual try-on, personalized size recommendations, review highlights, and improved size charts to make sure they find the right fit, we’re phasing out the Try Before You Buy option.”
That announcement does not establish that every current U.S. apparel listing has free returns. Check the live item and order terms instead. Read the Associated Press report.
Bottom line for a U.S. shopper
Choose the retailer whose exact listing gives you the return route, deadline and cost you can realistically use. Nordstrom is the strongest fit when its stated free mail or store route matches your order. Zara can work well if you can use its qualifying store route and meet the condition rules; its courier option is not cost-free in the cited terms. ASOS requires attention to checkout type, Final Sale and partner status. Amazon.com can offer relevant marketplace choices, but the U.S. evidence supports item-by-item verification rather than a blanket fashion promise. For selection, decide from the brands, sizes, fits and styles on your own shortlist—the evidence does not support a universal assortment champion.
