Amazon EventBridge vs. Amazon SQS for Event-Driven Architectures

Choose Amazon EventBridge when your primary problem is deciding which consumers should receive an event. Choose Amazon SQS when your primary problem is holding work until consumers are ready to process it. EventBridge is an event bus and routing layer: producers publish events, rules match their content, and matching targets are invoked. Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) is a pull-based queue: messages remain available while workers retrieve them at a pace they control. They are complementary rather than interchangeable. A common architecture routes selected EventBridge events into SQS, adding a durable buffer between production and processing.

The fundamental difference: routing versus queued work

Event-driven systems often need two separate capabilities. First, they need to decide which services are interested in an event. Second, they may need to retain work until a consumer has capacity to process it. EventBridge is designed primarily for the first job; SQS is designed primarily for the second.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

With EventBridge, a producer publishes an event to an event bus. Rules evaluate the event’s content and route matching events to one or more targets. The producer does not need to know which consumers exist or how they are implemented. This creates a central integration point for AWS services, custom applications, and supported third-party sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

With SQS, a producer sends a message to a queue. A consumer polls the queue, receives a message, processes it, and deletes it after successful handling. The queue retains messages while workers are unavailable, slow, or intentionally scaled down. Consumers therefore control their retrieval rate instead of being invoked directly by every producer event.

The choice should follow the workload:

  • Content-based fanout, many event sources, or loosely coupled routing: start with EventBridge.
  • A durable backlog, pull-based workers, or producer and consumer rate mismatch: start with SQS.
  • Both selective routing and backlog protection: route EventBridge events to SQS.
  • Required sequence processing: evaluate an SQS FIFO queue and its message-group semantics rather than relying on EventBridge bus ordering.

EventBridge and SQS compared

Decision axis Amazon EventBridge Amazon SQS What it means for your design
Core model Event bus with rules that match events and route them to targets. Pull-based queue whose consumers retrieve messages. Use EventBridge for routing decisions; use SQS for queued work.
Filtering Content-based event-pattern matching in rules. The queue does not choose consumers based on message content. Put routing logic in EventBridge; use separate queues or another routing service when appropriate.
Persistence and pacing Routes events in real time; it is not an SQS-style work buffer. Messages remain until consumed or expired, and workers choose when to poll. SQS absorbs a producer/consumer speed mismatch.
Ordering An event bus does not guarantee ordering. FIFO queues provide ordered delivery within FIFO queue semantics and message groups. Use SQS FIFO when sequence is a hard requirement.
Delivery model At-least-once target delivery; source delivery depends on the source service’s delivery mode. At-least-once delivery, so duplicate messages are possible. Consumers in either design must be idempotent.
Integration boundary Connects event sources to multiple targets through rules. Feeds workers such as Lambda functions or EC2 applications; it can also receive events routed from EventBridge. Choose whether the boundary is an event bus or a worker queue.
Billing dimensions Includes events published and target invocations. Includes API requests and data transfer. Model your actual volume, payloads, requests, targets, and region; neither service is universally cheaper.

When EventBridge is the better starting point

Content-based routing

EventBridge rules can inspect event fields and send only matching events to a target. For example, an order-created event can be routed to an inventory service when its event type is OrderCreated, to an analytics target when its region is relevant, and to a notification workflow when a priority field is high. Producers publish a standard event; consumers subscribe by defining rules rather than asking the producer for custom delivery code.

Many producers and consumers

An event bus is useful when services evolve independently. AWS Prescriptive Guidance describes the benefit this way: “Using an event bus enables you to decouple producers from consumers and consolidate your routing and delivery logic.” A producer can publish without maintaining a list of every interested service, while each consumer owns the rule that expresses its interest.

Real-time notification and integration

EventBridge is a natural integration boundary when an event should trigger several targets promptly and the system does not require a queue to meter worker throughput. It can connect AWS sources, custom applications, and supported third-party event sources to targets such as compute, workflows, APIs, and queues.

What EventBridge does not provide by itself

Do not treat an event bus as a durable work queue. Its primary function is to evaluate and route events. It does not provide the same consumer-controlled backlog model as SQS, and an event bus does not guarantee global ordering. If a target is down or intentionally throttled, design explicit retry and dead-letter behavior rather than assuming events will wait indefinitely in a queue.

When SQS is the better starting point

Durable backlog and independent processing speed

SQS lets production and processing run at different rates. A burst of messages can accumulate while workers process them steadily; workers can scale out when backlog grows and scale down when it falls. Consumers pull messages when they are ready, so a slow downstream dependency does not have to block the producer directly.

AWS’s decision guidance states that SQS messages remain until they are consumed or expire, with retention of up to 14 days. That limit is a service maximum, not a promise that every message will remain available for the full period: the queue’s configured retention and the message’s age determine when it expires. Verify current limits and configuration in the region where you deploy.

Worker-oriented processing

Choose SQS when each message represents work for a worker: generating a document, resizing an image, calling a rate-limited partner API, or updating a database. The worker controls polling, concurrency, visibility timeout, acknowledgment, and retry behavior. This model is often easier to reason about than invoking a target directly for every incoming event.

FIFO ordering requirements

SQS FIFO queues are the relevant option when processing order is a business requirement. FIFO semantics apply within the queue’s supported rules, including message groups; they are not a statement that every message across every group is globally serialized. Design a message-group strategy that matches the entity whose events must remain in sequence, such as one group per account or order.

Standard SQS delivery is at least once. Even with FIFO, consumers should safely handle retries and duplicate deliveries according to the queue’s documented behavior. Persist a deduplication key or use an idempotent update so a repeated message cannot apply the business action twice.

Three architecture patterns

Pattern 1: EventBridge directly to targets

  1. Define the event envelope and the fields that consumers will need for matching.
  2. Publish events to an EventBridge event bus from producers or integrated AWS sources.
  3. Create a rule with an event pattern that selects the intended event types, attributes, or sources.
  4. Attach one or more targets to the rule and set target retry and dead-letter behavior deliberately.
  5. Make every target idempotent because target delivery is at least once.

This pattern minimizes moving parts when events should trigger actions promptly and no consumer needs a long-lived backlog. Separate rules let teams add or remove consumers without changing the producer.

Pattern 2: SQS as the primary work queue

  1. Create a standard queue for parallel work or a FIFO queue when ordered processing is required.
  2. Set message retention, visibility timeout, receive wait time, and redrive behavior for the expected processing time and failure rate.
  3. Have producers send work messages directly to the queue.
  4. Run workers that poll, process, and delete messages only after the business operation succeeds.
  5. Monitor queue depth, age of the oldest message, receive count, and failed processing so capacity can be adjusted before the backlog becomes an outage.

This pattern is appropriate when the queue itself is the integration contract. It does not select different consumers by message content; if distinct workloads need isolation, use separate queues or add a routing layer before the queues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pattern 3: EventBridge routed to SQS

  1. Publish a domain event to EventBridge.
  2. Use an event pattern to select the subset intended for a particular worker class.
  3. Configure the matching rule to send the event to an SQS queue.
  4. Let workers poll that queue at a safe rate and acknowledge messages after successful processing.
  5. Scale workers and queue settings independently of the event producers.

This combination separates two decisions: EventBridge decides which work stream should receive an event, and SQS decides when that stream’s workers process it. It is useful when events arrive in bursts, consumers have variable capacity, or downstream systems impose rate limits.

Delivery guarantees, duplicates, retries, and dead-letter queues

At-least-once means idempotency is mandatory

The AWS decision guidance describes at-least-once delivery for both EventBridge and SQS. A timeout, acknowledgment failure, or retry can therefore result in the same logical event being delivered more than once. Design handlers so repeating an operation is harmless: record an event or request identifier, use conditional writes, make updates naturally idempotent, or separate a one-time side effect from a repeatable state update.

EventBridge has separate source and target stages

Reliability begins before EventBridge receives an event. AWS services can deliver to EventBridge on a best-effort or durable basis, depending on the source integration. After ingestion, EventBridge applies the configured target-delivery retry policy and can send an undeliverable event to a configured SQS dead-letter queue. These are different stages; a target retry policy cannot turn a best-effort source delivery into a guaranteed source delivery.

Target retry settings are configurable

The EventBridge User Guide configuration consulted for this comparison lists a default of five attempts or 300 seconds, and configurable ceilings of 185 attempts and 86,400 seconds of maximum event age. Those figures describe the documented target-delivery configuration, not a universal default for every EventBridge feature or integration. Set limits based on how long the target can be unavailable and how late an event remains useful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dead-letter queues are a recovery path, not a substitute for monitoring

When retries are exhausted, a configured SQS dead-letter queue can retain the failure record for investigation and replay. Without a DLQ, the event may be dropped after the retry policy ends. Alert on DLQ arrivals, preserve the original event and error context, and define an operator procedure for correcting the target before replaying messages. A DLQ that is never monitored simply delays discovery.

SQS failure handling

SQS consumers normally use a visibility timeout: a received message is temporarily hidden while processing. If the worker fails to delete it before the timeout, it can become visible again and be delivered again. Configure the timeout to exceed normal processing time, extend it for legitimately long jobs, and use a redrive policy to move repeatedly failing messages to an SQS dead-letter queue. The consumer still needs idempotency because a failure can occur after the business action but before deletion.

Ordering: what is guaranteed and what is not

EventBridge event buses do not guarantee ordering. Two related events can arrive at a target in a different order, and multiple targets can observe them at different times. If the business rule is “update state only after event A and then event B,” encode sequence information and handle out-of-order arrivals, or move the ordered work to a service designed for it.

SQS FIFO is the direct option for ordered queue processing. Assign messages to a message group representing the entity whose sequence matters. AWS also documents a specific EventBridge Pipes behavior for FIFO input: SQS delivers messages within a group to the pipe in order, and the pipe processes one batch at a time for a group. The queue’s visibility timeout must allow enough time for processing and retries. This Pipes behavior should not be generalized into an ordering guarantee for EventBridge event buses.

Filtering and fanout choices

EventBridge is the stronger fit when routing depends on event content. A single event can match multiple rules, allowing independent consumers to receive the same logical event without the producer knowing their identities. Keep patterns precise: match on stable fields such as source, detail type, and explicit business attributes rather than incidental text that may change.

An SQS queue does not perform consumer selection based on message content. If several worker types poll one queue, each worker may receive messages intended for another type unless the message contract and dispatch logic account for that. For classic publish-and-subscribe fanout or filtering combinations, AWS guidance also identifies Amazon SNS with SQS as a pattern to consider. Select the service that matches whether you need an event bus rule, a topic fanout, or a single work queue.

Consumer control, scaling, and back-pressure

EventBridge-first workloads

Direct targets receive delivery attempts according to EventBridge’s target policy. This is convenient for event-triggered actions, but the target must be prepared for bursts and transient retries. Apply target-side concurrency limits, rate controls, or an intermediate queue when a dependency cannot absorb the event rate.

SQS-first workloads

Workers pull only as many messages as their concurrency and downstream capacity allow. Queue depth and oldest-message age become operational signals: a rising backlog indicates that production exceeds processing capacity or that a dependency is failing. Scaling workers changes consumption without changing producers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Combined workloads

Routing into separate queues can isolate workloads with different priorities, retry policies, or processing times. For example, a high-priority event rule can feed a dedicated queue while a broad analytics rule feeds another. This prevents a slow analytics consumer from competing directly with latency-sensitive work.

Cost: compare the workload, not the service names

AWS identifies different billing dimensions. EventBridge costs depend on factors including events published and target invocations. SQS costs depend on API requests and data transfer. A design that sends one event to several EventBridge targets can incur multiple target invocations; a queue-based design can generate receive, visibility, and delete requests in addition to sends. Payload size, batching, retry volume, cross-region or cross-service transfer, and the number of consumers all affect the result.

There is no evidence-based universal winner. Build a regional estimate using expected events per second, average payload size, number of matching targets, queue sends and receives, batch sizes, retries, and data-transfer paths. Recheck current regional rates and quotas before committing because service pricing and limits change.

A practical selection checklist

  • Do rules need to inspect event content? Choose EventBridge as the routing layer.
  • Will multiple independent consumers subscribe to the same event? EventBridge provides the event-bus boundary; add queues where individual consumers need buffering.
  • Must work wait while workers are unavailable or throttled? Choose SQS or route EventBridge into SQS.
  • Should consumers pull at their own pace? Use SQS.
  • Is ordered processing a hard requirement? Evaluate SQS FIFO and message groups; do not rely on EventBridge bus order.
  • Can the consumer safely process duplicates? Make it idempotent before production.
  • What happens after repeated failure? Set retry limits intentionally and configure a monitored DLQ where recovery matters.
  • Are source and target guarantees understood separately? Confirm the source’s EventBridge delivery mode and the target’s retry policy.
  • Have costs been modeled with regional rates? Count events, target invocations, requests, payloads, retries, and transfer rather than comparing headline service prices.

Decision examples

One customer event, several interested services

A customer-profile-updated event must reach search indexing, audit storage, and a notification workflow. EventBridge is the natural first layer because each consumer can define its own matching rule. If search indexing needs protection from bursts, route that rule to an SQS queue while the other targets remain direct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Image processing with a slow external dependency

Uploads create processing jobs faster than an external image API can accept them. SQS should hold the jobs, and workers should poll at a rate the API permits. EventBridge is useful only if several event types must first be filtered into separate work queues.

Account ledger events that must remain in sequence

When applying transactions in order is essential, use an SQS FIFO design with message groups chosen around the account or ledger whose sequence matters. Do not assume that publishing the transactions to an EventBridge bus preserves their order.

Events from many AWS services with a shared policy

When multiple AWS sources must trigger a consistent set of routing rules, EventBridge provides a centralized event boundary. Add SQS behind individual rules when a consumer needs a backlog, independent scaling, or a replay and redrive workflow.

Limits and maintenance considerations

Service details are not static. The 14-day SQS retention maximum is identified in the AWS Decision Guide updated in November 2025. The EventBridge retry figures above come from the EventBridge User Guide configuration accessed in 2026. Confirm current quotas, retention limits, integration behavior, pricing, and regional availability in the AWS documentation for your deployment before launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Document the event schema, ownership of each rule and queue, idempotency key, retry policy, DLQ retention, replay procedure, and ordering assumptions. Those operational contracts matter more than choosing a service by brand or by a generic “serverless” label.

Bottom line

EventBridge answers “which consumers should receive this event?” SQS answers “how can this work wait safely until a consumer is ready?” Use EventBridge for content-based routing and broad event integration, SQS for durable pull-based processing and FIFO ordering, and both together when a routed event also needs a buffer. Treat delivery as at least once, separate source reliability from target retries, configure DLQs deliberately, and compare costs using the workload’s actual event, request, target, payload, and regional-traffic profile.
