Amazon ECS GPU auto repair, EC2 Auto Scaling replacement, and EC2 automatic recovery solve different failures. ECS GPU auto repair uses NVIDIA DCGM health checks on ECS Managed Instances with GPU hardware. When it detects a critical GPU failure, ECS marks the instance impaired and draining, provisions replacement capacity, lets eligible tasks stop gracefully, and then terminates the damaged instance.
EC2 Auto Scaling replaces an instance that its configured health signals classify as unhealthy so the group can maintain desired capacity. EC2 automatic instance recovery instead attempts to move an instance to another host after an underlying AWS infrastructure problem causes a system status-check failure. Choosing correctly depends on which component detects the fault, whether you need a new instance or recovery of the same instance, and whether ECS can drain and reschedule the workload.

What each recovery mechanism actually protects
These features are often grouped together as “AWS auto-repair,” but they operate at separate layers:
| Mechanism | Primary failure signal | What AWS does | GPU-specific? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon ECS Managed Instances GPU auto repair | NVIDIA Data Center GPU Manager (DCGM) health checks reporting a critical GPU failure | ECS marks the host impaired and draining, provisions replacement capacity, allows supported tasks to stop, then terminates the impaired host | Yes |
| EC2 Auto Scaling health replacement | EC2 health plus configured signals such as load balancer, VPC Lattice, EBS, or customer-defined checks | Terminates and replaces an unhealthy InService instance to preserve the group’s desired capacity | No; GPU diagnosis is not its role |
| EC2 automatic instance recovery and AWS Health | An EC2 system status-check failure caused by an underlying AWS host or infrastructure problem | Attempts to recover the instance on another host; AWS Health reports a simplified recovery outcome | No; it is aimed at infrastructure failure |
The practical distinction is replacement versus recovery. ECS and Auto Scaling generally replace a host. EC2 automatic recovery attempts to restore the existing instance after a qualifying infrastructure fault. None of the three is a universal solution for application bugs, guest operating-system failures, arbitrary GPU errors, or every ECS task interruption.

How Amazon ECS GPU auto repair works
1. ECS monitors the GPU through DCGM
GPU auto repair applies to Amazon ECS Managed Instances that use GPU hardware. ECS uses NVIDIA DCGM to monitor GPU health. A critical DCGM failure can cause ECS to classify the instance as impaired. This is a hardware-health path, not a generic test of whether a machine-learning job is producing correct output or whether an application is responsive.
2. The impaired instance enters draining
After a qualifying failure, ECS marks the instance impaired and places it in a draining workflow. For service tasks, the ECS scheduler can stop tasks according to their configured deployment and stop behavior and place replacement replicas on healthy capacity. This is why GPU auto repair is more workload-aware than a bare EC2 termination.
3. ECS provisions replacement capacity
ECS provisions replacement capacity before completing the repair workflow. Your service still needs enough desired task capacity, placement flexibility, and available quota for replacement tasks to start. Auto repair does not guarantee that a replacement host will be ready for every task immediately, particularly when the task requests a scarce GPU shape or has restrictive placement constraints.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute4. Tasks receive a graceful-stop opportunity
Tasks covered by the ECS draining behavior are given an opportunity to stop gracefully. Services can be rescheduled by the ECS scheduler. Standalone tasks started with RunTask are different: draining does not automatically manage them in the same way as service replica tasks. A standalone task may finish on the impaired host or require an operator or automation to stop and relaunch it.
5. ECS terminates the impaired host
Once the draining and replacement process reaches its termination stage, ECS terminates the impaired instance. The sequence is therefore detect critical GPU failure, mark impaired, drain, replace capacity, and terminate—not an in-place repair of the GPU.

How much draining can happen at once?
AWS documents a limit of no more than 20% of the instances belonging to the capacity provider draining at one time. For a capacity provider with fewer than nine instances, the documented limit is at most one instance draining at a time. These are service behavior limits, not availability or downtime guarantees.
What changes when GPU auto repair is disabled?
AWS states that GPU auto repair is enabled by default for ECS Managed Instances using GPU hardware. If you disable the setting, ECS continues to monitor GPU health, but it does not automatically replace an instance that becomes impaired from that GPU signal.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Disabling the setting also disables ECS Managed Daemons auto repair. Treat that as a separate operational consequence: one switch affects both the GPU repair behavior and the related managed-daemon repair behavior. Confirm the setting on the actual capacity provider rather than assuming that a default applies to every ECS launch type.
ECS Managed Daemons are a related, separate signal
ECS can also impair, drain, and replace a host when a critical daemon stops or becomes unhealthy. Daemon criticality is configurable, and the daemon documentation states that critical defaults to true. This path is not the same as DCGM GPU health monitoring:
- GPU auto repair reacts to a critical NVIDIA GPU health failure.
- Managed-daemon repair reacts to the health of a configured daemon.
- Both can lead to host impairment and replacement, but a daemon failure does not prove that the GPU is defective.
Keep the two signals distinct in incident alerts and runbooks so that an application or daemon problem is not misdiagnosed as a hardware failure.

How EC2 Auto Scaling health replacement differs
Its goal is desired group capacity
EC2 Auto Scaling considers an instance healthy unless it receives an unhealthy indication from one of its configured health sources. When an InService instance is judged unhealthy, Auto Scaling replaces it to maintain the group’s desired capacity. The feature is therefore a capacity-management controller, not a GPU diagnostic system.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Health sources are configurable
Depending on the group configuration, health information can include EC2 health and signals from an Elastic Load Balancing target group, VPC Lattice, EBS, or customer-defined checks. The health-check type, grace period, and integration choices determine how quickly an instance is declared unhealthy and whether a transient startup condition is ignored.
An Auto Scaling group can replace a GPU host even when no GPU-specific signal was involved. Conversely, a GPU can be malfunctioning while the group’s configured signals remain healthy, in which case ordinary Auto Scaling health replacement may not occur.
ECS integration is possible, but diagnosis remains separate
ECS capacity providers backed by Auto Scaling groups can use ECS managed draining for Auto Scaling replacement and other supported termination paths. That integration helps ECS coordinate task shutdown and rescheduling, but it does not turn Auto Scaling into a DCGM monitor. You still need an ECS Managed Instance GPU repair path or a separate health signal if the failure you care about is GPU-specific.
What EC2 automatic instance recovery and AWS Health recovery do
Recovery targets an underlying host or infrastructure fault
EC2 automatic recovery addresses a failed EC2 system status check caused by an underlying AWS infrastructure problem. Rather than intentionally replacing the instance because a group considers it unhealthy, EC2 attempts to move or recover the instance on another host. This is useful when the guest workload is intact but the physical or virtualized infrastructure hosting it is impaired.

It is not a general GPU or application repair
A system status-check recovery does not establish that the NVIDIA GPU is healthy, that the operating system is functioning correctly, or that an ECS task can resume safely. It is not a substitute for GPU-aware replacement, application-level health checks, service replication, or a restart strategy for failed tasks.
Simplified recovery and action-based recovery have different conditions
AWS documents simplified recovery as enabled by default on supported instances, subject to instance eligibility and conditions. A CloudWatch action-based recovery configuration has its own prerequisites, including that the instance be running and that capacity be available for the instance type. Check support for the specific instance configuration before relying on either mode.
AWS Health reports the outcome
AWS Health Dashboard events provide a simplified view of recovery outcomes. They are useful for operational awareness, but an AWS Health event does not replace ECS task monitoring, service health checks, or application-level failover.
Will ECS move tasks before replacing an unhealthy instance?
For supported ECS draining workflows, service tasks can be stopped gracefully and rescheduled before the impaired host is terminated. The guarantee is not universal:
- Service replica tasks are handled by ECS scheduler behavior during draining.
- Standalone
RunTasktasks are not automatically managed like service replicas; they may need to finish or be stopped and relaunched by your own automation. - Task placement can still fail if no healthy host has the required GPU, CPU, memory, networking, or placement attributes.
- Draining can remain in progress for up to 48 hours under the documented ECS managed-instance draining behavior for EC2-backed ECS capacity providers.
A long draining period is not evidence that repair succeeded or failed. It can indicate that tasks have not exited, replacement placement is constrained, or the scheduler is waiting for the configured termination behavior.

Configuration checklist before enabling a repair path
For ECS GPU auto repair
- Verify the capacity-provider type. Confirm that the workload runs on ECS Managed Instances with supported GPU hardware. Do not apply the Managed Instance default to an unrelated ECS launch configuration.
- Confirm GPU health monitoring. Ensure NVIDIA DCGM is part of the supported host configuration and that your team knows which alerts represent a critical failure.
- Check the auto-repair setting. It is enabled by default for the stated Managed Instance GPU scenario, but verify the deployed setting. Remember that disabling it also disables Managed Daemons auto repair while monitoring continues.
- Design services for replacement. Use service replica counts and placement rules that allow tasks to run on more than one healthy GPU host when the workload permits it.
- Account for scarce capacity. Validate GPU quotas, instance availability, task resource requests, and placement constraints so replacement capacity can actually launch.
- Define standalone-task recovery. If you use
RunTask, create an explicit completion, timeout, and relaunch policy instead of assuming draining will move the task.
For an Auto Scaling-backed ECS capacity provider
- Select the health signals intentionally. Decide whether EC2, load balancer, VPC Lattice, EBS, or custom checks should make an instance unhealthy.
- Set the grace period for startup. Give a new GPU host enough time to initialize drivers, agents, and task prerequisites before health checks can trigger replacement.
- Enable ECS managed draining where supported. This lets ECS coordinate task shutdown for Auto Scaling replacement and other supported termination events.
- Keep desired capacity realistic. Auto Scaling preserves the group’s configured number of instances; it cannot create capacity beyond quotas, limits, or unavailable instance types.
For EC2 automatic recovery
- Check instance eligibility. Confirm that the instance type and configuration support the recovery mode you intend to use.
- Verify the status-check scope. Recovery is for underlying infrastructure failures that produce a system status-check failure, not for every unhealthy application or GPU.
- Review action-based prerequisites. For CloudWatch action-based recovery, the instance must be running and capacity for its instance type must be available.
- Pair recovery with application failover. AWS recommends a high-availability design that can shift traffic to healthy instances; relying on instance recovery alone does not create application-level resilience.
Failure scenarios and the right response
| Observed problem | Most relevant mechanism | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A critical NVIDIA GPU health failure is reported on an ECS Managed Instance | ECS GPU auto repair | DCGM is the detection source and ECS can drain and replace the impaired host |
| A service instance fails a configured load-balancer health check | EC2 Auto Scaling replacement, with ECS managed draining if configured | The group health signal identifies an unhealthy member; this is not necessarily a GPU fault |
| The EC2 system status check fails because the AWS host or infrastructure is impaired | EC2 automatic instance recovery | The mechanism is designed to recover the instance from an underlying host problem |
| A standalone GPU task hangs during host draining | Task-specific automation | Standalone tasks are not managed like ECS service replicas during draining |
| There is no healthy GPU capacity for replacement placement | Capacity and placement remediation | Repair can start the replacement workflow, but quotas, availability, and placement constraints still govern whether a task can run |
| An application crashes while EC2 and GPU health remain normal | Application or service restart policy | None of the infrastructure mechanisms is an application correctness monitor |
How to choose for a production GPU service
Use ECS GPU auto repair as the GPU-host safety net
If your architecture uses ECS Managed Instances with GPU hardware, GPU auto repair is the mechanism aligned with a critical GPU failure. It combines GPU-specific detection with ECS draining and replacement. Keep it enabled unless you have a deliberate external remediation process and understand the effect on Managed Daemons auto repair.
Add Auto Scaling health replacement for group-level failures
An Auto Scaling-backed capacity provider is useful when instance health must include load-balancer reachability, EBS problems, VPC Lattice signals, or custom checks. Configure those signals to reflect the failure modes that matter to your service, and enable ECS managed draining so task shutdown is coordinated during replacement.
Enable EC2 recovery for infrastructure faults
Automatic recovery is complementary when the failure is an AWS host or infrastructure problem that appears as a system status-check failure. It should sit alongside, not instead of, service replication, ECS task replacement, and GPU-aware health handling.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Build for more than one failure path
A resilient GPU service normally needs all of the following: a GPU-specific response, group health replacement, infrastructure recovery where supported, enough spare capacity to place replacement tasks, and an application-level strategy for failed or stalled work. No single controller can infer every failure from one health signal.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “auto repair” means the GPU is repaired in place. ECS GPU auto repair replaces the impaired capacity; it does not repair the physical GPU inside that instance.
- Treating Auto Scaling as a GPU monitor. Auto Scaling reacts to its configured health inputs and may never see a GPU failure.
- Using EC2 recovery for a task failure. Recovery targets infrastructure system-check failures, not an unhealthy container or a failed model process.
- Expecting every task to move during draining. ECS service replicas and standalone tasks have different behavior.
- Ignoring the 20% draining limit. A large repair event may be serialized by the documented capacity-provider limit, and a provider with fewer than nine instances is limited to one draining instance at a time.
- Assuming replacement capacity is automatic and unlimited. Quotas, instance availability, GPU scarcity, and placement constraints can prevent immediate scheduling.
- Applying Managed Instance defaults to every ECS provider. Verify the provider type, health configuration, supported instance conditions, and service settings in the deployed architecture.
Bottom line for architecture decisions
Start with the failure signal. A critical DCGM GPU failure on an ECS Managed Instance belongs to ECS GPU auto repair. An unhealthy member of an Auto Scaling group belongs to the group’s health-replacement policy. An EC2 system status-check failure caused by AWS infrastructure belongs to automatic instance recovery. Configure ECS managed draining when you need service tasks coordinated during replacement, and create explicit handling for standalone tasks. Combining these mechanisms gives broader coverage, but each remains limited to the failure class it can actually detect.
