To stream from a Dockerized encoder on Amazon EC2 to YouTube, install Docker on an Amazon Linux 2023 instance, configure a maintained encoder container with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then test the feed in Live Control Room before starting the event. YouTube recommends RTMPS when your encoder supports it. The exact container image, EC2 size, and encoder command depend on your chosen software and workload; there is no universal configuration.
Before you begin
- An eligible YouTube channel and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- An Amazon EC2 instance running Amazon Linux 2023 for the installation steps below.
- A maintained Docker image for an encoder that supports your chosen video and audio formats, architecture, and YouTube ingest protocol.
- Enough sustained outbound bandwidth and compute capacity for the encoder settings you intend to use.
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the minimum age for streaming is 16. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your event. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Get the YouTube stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a live stream. For an existing stream, open its settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that specific stream.
- In your encoder’s configuration, enter the URL and key in the appropriate server and key fields. Prefer the RTMPS server URL if the encoder supports it.
A stream key is a credential: YouTube describes it as a password and address. Do not publish it in a Docker image, source repository, logs, or a command that may be saved in shell history. Use the encoder’s supported secret or environment-variable mechanism, and restrict access to the host. If you suspect the key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. The ordinary RTMP URL may be displayed by default, so verify the configured URL actually begins with the RTMPS scheme when you intend to use encrypted ingest. The encoder must support RTMPS. YouTube also documents HLS ingest, but HLS requires a compatible encoder and the matching stream-key protocol selection; do not combine HLS settings with an RTMPS configuration. Install Docker on Amazon Linux 2023
AWS documents this host setup sequence for Amazon Linux 2023. Package and OS instructions can change, so confirm the current AWS guide when deploying.
- Connect to the EC2 instance using SSH.
- Update installed packages:
sudo yum update -y - Install Docker:
sudo yum install docker - Start the Docker service:
sudo service docker start - Optionally add the default EC2 user to the Docker group:
sudo usermod -a -G docker ec2-user - If you changed group membership, log out and reconnect. Verify Docker can reach its daemon:
docker info
If docker info reports that the daemon is unreachable, confirm the service started, reconnect after changing group membership, and consider a reboot if the problem persists. Follow the current AWS Docker installation guidance for Amazon Linux 2023.
Choose and run an encoder container
The Docker installation above prepares the EC2 host; it does not install or configure a YouTube encoder. Select a maintained image separately and check its documentation before launching it. In particular, confirm that it supports the EC2 instance architecture, the codecs and ingest protocol you plan to use, and your requirements for persistent files and configuration.

- Supply the YouTube URL and key through the image’s documented configuration mechanism, preferably a secrets facility or protected environment/configuration file.
- Mount any required media or persistent configuration into the container according to the image documentation.
- Use a restart policy or service supervisor only after confirming how the selected image handles failures and reconnects; a restart policy alone does not prove the encoder can resume a YouTube stream correctly.
- Inspect the image documentation and logs for the actual encoder command, output format, and error behavior. There is no single safe Docker command that applies to all encoder images.
Do not assume that a container image will be maintained, compatible, or secure just because it is available in a registry. Review its publisher, update history, supported architecture, and secret-handling guidance.

In this workflow, the encoder on EC2 initiates an outbound connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Do not open a public inbound RTMP port merely because the protocol is called RTMP. Permit the selected endpoint and port through your network controls as required by the encoder and AWS configuration, and limit administrative SSH access to trusted source addresses. The exact security-group rules depend on your setup and are not universal.
If a TLS connection fails, first confirm the URL is the RTMPS endpoint and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance suggests specifying port 443 as a step to try when SSL connections fail.

Set encoder quality and check capacity
Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes
Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the encoder. YouTube says it detects incoming settings and transcodes the feed into output formats, but you still need to choose settings the encoder and EC2 host can sustain. Use YouTube’s current recommendations for the resolution and codec you select rather than copying a bitrate intended for a different format.
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These encoder settings are separate from Docker and EC2 configuration.

YouTube says the total bitrate being streamed cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends a 20% buffer beyond the combined streaming bitrate. Check the instance’s sustained outbound capacity, not the viewer’s download speed. For example, if your combined audio and video bitrate is 10 Mbps, plan for at least 12 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity using YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.

CPU or GPU requirements depend on whether the chosen encoder is encoding in software or using supported hardware acceleration, as well as the codec, resolution, frame rate, and workload. AWS’s Docker installation steps do not identify a suitable EC2 instance size or a universal price. Evaluate the actual encoder under representative load before relying on it for a long event.

- Start the encoder container with the intended media and settings.
- For a scheduled stream, wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room’s preview. Confirm the selected stream is receiving the expected picture and audio.
- Check YouTube’s stream health indicators and test the watch page before the event. Use representative motion and audio; a static or low-complexity test may not reveal bandwidth or encoding problems.
- When the preview is correct, start the live event in Live Control Room. For an immediate stream, follow YouTube’s workflow to start the encoder after entering the URL and key.
- Monitor video, audio, and stream health during the broadcast. To end it, stop the encoder feed; YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

Troubleshoot common failures

Cost and capacity planning
EC2 cost depends on the instance type, AWS region, runtime, and any storage or data-transfer charges applicable to your deployment. The evidence here does not establish a current instance price or a recommended instance size for a particular encoder. Measure the selected container under its real workload, then estimate the full runtime cost using AWS pricing for the region and instance you choose.

If you need continuous operation, account for more than the instance’s hourly charge: plan for host or container recovery, stream reconnection behavior, monitoring, and the time required to maintain the deployment. A Docker container on EC2 is still a system you administer.
