Amazon’s proposed drone-delivery service in Westborough, Massachusetts, has not launched, and there is no firm public start date. The plan would use the existing fulfillment center at 64 Otis Street, but site-plan review and state approval for landing areas were still pending in late September 2026. The proposal also faces questions from residents and state lawmakers about flight routes, hours, noise, safety, privacy, and how many deliveries would be made.
What Amazon is proposing in Westborough
The town’s notice describes a Prime Air Drone Delivery Center at Amazon’s existing fulfillment center at 64 Otis Street. The proposed aircraft is Amazon’s MK30 drone. Westborough’s notice identifies the aircraft and facility, while local reporting describes the proposed service area and operating goals; those details are not a final approved flight plan.
Boston.com reported a proposed delivery radius of 7.5 miles and packages weighing up to five pounds. CBS Boston reported that Amazon’s eventual goal is as many as 1,000 deliveries a day. That figure is a reported long-term goal, not a confirmed day-one volume or an approved operating limit. The final service map, flight frequency, routes, and operating hours had not been settled in the reporting available by October 3, 2026.
WBUR reported that the MK30 is about 80 pounds, measures roughly five feet by five feet, and can travel at speeds of up to 74 mph. These are reported aircraft specifications, not independent testing of flights in Westborough. [WBUR]

Why the proposal is delayed
The project requires more than a local hearing or vote. Westborough’s Planning Board was reviewing site-plan changes for the facility, while state Aeronautics Division approval for landing areas was still awaited in late September. Federal aviation oversight also applies to drone operations in U.S. airspace. A local site-plan decision by itself would not authorize all flight operations.
The Planning Board continued its site-plan hearing to October 7, 2026. Because that hearing had not yet occurred as of October 3 and state approval remained pending, neither a final local schedule nor a launch date had been established in the latest detailed local coverage. Political pressure has added to the dispute. On September 29, State Senator Michael Moore and State Representatives Hannah Kane and Kate Donaghue asked Amazon to pause implementation and provide answers to residents. Their letter said the community could not fairly evaluate the proposal while important details remained undetermined, including flight paths, hours, service range, and daily flight counts. What is known—and still unclear—about flights
Service area and package size
The reported 7.5-mile radius and five-pound package limit describe the proposal, not a finalized service map or a guarantee that every address within that distance will be eligible. The coverage identified nearby communities that could be within reach, but the exact neighborhoods and routes were not established.

Daily volume, hours, and routes
Amazon’s reported eventual goal of up to 1,000 deliveries a day does not answer how many flights would operate on a typical day, how often drones would pass over a given street, or when flights would run. The state lawmakers specifically asked for clarification on those operating details.
Noise
Boston.com reported an Amazon representative’s estimate of about 65 decibels at takeoff and landing. WBUR reported Amazon spokesperson Jack Stelzner’s characterization that the drones fly mostly at higher altitude and that their sound is “comparable to a window fan on low, lasting 30 seconds and typically not heard indoors.” These are company-provided descriptions, not independent measurements of noise at Westborough homes or along proposed routes.

Planning Board vice chair John Gelcich told WBUR that members had received noise information from Amazon but could not know exactly what the experience would be without seeing or hearing the aircraft in person. Residents have also raised concerns about the frequency and effect of flights on neighborhood character. [WBUR]

Residents have asked what happens if a person, animal, or object is near a delivery drop zone and what imagery the aircraft captures. Boston.com reported Amazon’s description of navigation and collision-avoidance cameras and sensors. WBUR reported Amazon’s claim that there is no live camera feed and that captured images are stored on encrypted drives. Those statements describe the company’s account of its system; the local reporting does not establish an independent safety or privacy audit of the Westborough proposal.

The available reporting also does not settle every operational detail, such as which routes would be used or how the company would address a specific concern at a particular property. Residents’ questions therefore remain tied to information the town and company have yet to clarify publicly.
What happens next
The next scheduled local milestone in the latest reporting reviewed was the Planning Board’s October 7, 2026 site-plan hearing. The state landing-area approval was also still pending, and neither step alone should be read as a firm service start date. Amazon said it was working with local officials and exploring opportunities to expand drone delivery in Westborough and elsewhere; it did not announce a confirmed launch date. [CBS Boston]
