The report said Amazon still planned to unveil the assistant on February 26, but pushed its public release to March 31 or later. Amazon did unveil Alexa+ on February 26 and said Early Access would begin in March. As of September 1, 2026, Amazon says Alexa+ is available to all U.S. customers.
What the March delay report said
The Washington Post reported on February 14, 2025, that Amazon had postponed the planned public release of its next-generation Alexa until March 31 or later, while keeping a February 26 unveiling on the calendar. The newspaper said incorrect answers during testing contributed to the delay, citing internal messages and an Amazon employee who spoke anonymously. That explanation was reported context, not a public explanation from Amazon.

Amazon subsequently unveiled Alexa+ on February 26, 2025, and said Early Access would begin in March. The date in the headline therefore refers to a delay reported before launch, not a current postponement.

What Alexa+ is
Amazon presents Alexa+ as a generative-AI assistant designed for natural conversation and tasks such as shopping, planning, reservations, and smart-home control. Amazon says it is built on large language models from Amazon Nova and Anthropic. These are company descriptions of the service and its architecture, not independent performance findings.

Amazon Vice President of Alexa and Echo Daniel Rausch described it as “smarter, more conversational, more personalized, and can get a wide range of things done on your behalf.” That is Amazon’s characterization of Alexa+, not an independent assessment of its capabilities.
Who can use Alexa+ in the United States
In an update dated September 1, 2026, Amazon said Alexa+ was available to all U.S. customers. The access and price options Amazon listed for the United States are:

Amazon lists Alexa-enabled devices, Alexa.com, and the Alexa app as access routes. The U.S. terms above should not be assumed to apply elsewhere: Amazon’s September 2026 international update describes country-specific Early Access programs and pricing.
Do you need a new Echo?
No. In the United States, Amazon lists web and app access as well as Alexa-enabled devices, so buying hardware is not the only route. For device use, however, compatibility is model-specific: Amazon directs customers to check whether their device supports Alexa+ and does not say every Echo generation or model qualifies.

Amazon’s requirements guidance also calls for a supported location and language and a personal Amazon account; Amazon Business and Enterprise accounts are not eligible under the stated requirements. If an invitation does not arrive after those conditions are met, Amazon suggests checking for a software update. Customers considering an Echo speaker or smart display should verify the exact model and market before buying. Amazon also says customers in Early Access markets may purchase an eligible Echo or register a compatible device they already own.
What Amazon’s participation figures do—and do not—show
Amazon said tens of millions of people had joined the Alexa+ Early Access program by 2026, without publishing a precise count. Separately, Amazon reported more than 9 billion Alexa interactions by customers in India in the prior 12 months. That India figure counts Alexa interactions, not Alexa+ users, and should not be treated as a measure of Alexa+ adoption.

The broad availability and prices described above apply to U.S. customers as of Amazon’s September 1, 2026 update. Other markets may have different Early Access arrangements, prices, supported languages, locations, and eligible devices. Check Amazon’s country-specific availability and device guidance for the market and model you intend to use.
