Amazon and Constellation announced a 20-year power purchase agreement for electricity from Maryland’s Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant on September 30, 2026. The agreement covers 690 megawatts, including an approximately 190-megawatt capacity increase expected in 2030–2032, and the companies say it will enable more than $3 billion in Maryland infrastructure investment. The plant’s output will continue flowing to PJM’s regional grid; the deal does not establish a dedicated physical power line to an Amazon data center. The “axed data center” in the headline cannot be identified from the available published details, and there is no evidence here that a cancellation caused the agreement.
What Amazon and Constellation agreed to
The September 30, 2026 announcement describes two linked arrangements: a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) supporting investment and expansion at the Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center, and a retail electricity supply arrangement for Amazon operations across the 13-state PJM market. The companies say the PPA covers 690 MW in total, including planned additional capacity. Approximately 190 MW of new generation is expected to come online between 2030 and 2032. Constellation and Amazon say the agreement will enable more than $3 billion in Maryland infrastructure investment, including improvements to the existing plant.
Those investment and schedule figures are company-announced plans, not completed construction or independently verified results. Constellation says the long-term commitment will provide revenue certainty as it pursues relicensing for another 20 years; the announcement does not mean relicensing or the planned work has already been approved or completed. Constellation and Amazon’s announcement provides the agreement terms.
What the megawatt figures mean
Constellation identified Calvert Cliffs’ existing capacity as 1,790 MW. The 690 MW covered by the agreement includes the planned capacity increase; it should not be read as 690 MW of new generation. The approximately 190 MW expected in 2030–2032 is the announced incremental capacity. The companies have not described that increment as already operating.

A PPA is a commercial arrangement for electricity, not proof that a generator is physically wired to a particular customer. The companies say all electricity generated at Calvert Cliffs will continue to flow to the PJM regional grid. Amazon’s retail supply arrangement covers its operations in the PJM market, but the announcement does not say that Calvert Cliffs will serve one specific Amazon data center through a dedicated connection.
What the deal means for Calvert Cliffs and Maryland
Calvert Cliffs is in Lusby, Maryland, on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay. Constellation described it as Maryland’s only nuclear plant and largest clean-energy source. The company said the facility produces about 80% of the state’s clean energy, supplies the equivalent of more than 1.3 million homes, employs more than 800 people, and contributes about $21 million a year in taxes. These are figures attributed to Constellation in its announcement, rather than independently audited impact findings.

The stated investment case is to support improvements at the existing 1,790 MW plant and a planned capacity increase while Constellation pursues a new operating license. The agreement’s 20-year term and the company’s stated relicensing objective are relevant to that plan, but neither guarantees regulatory approval or completion of the announced work.
What “axed data center” does—and does not—establish
The headline phrase “axed data center” refers to a cancellation that is not identified in the available published details. They do not establish the project’s name, location, capacity, cancellation date, or reason. Nor do they show that the cancellation caused Amazon and Constellation to sign the Calvert Cliffs agreement. It would be inaccurate to fill in those particulars or present a causal link as fact.

Likewise, the word “fuels” in the headline is market framing, not proof that the agreement caused a share-price move. A market snapshot listed Constellation Energy (CEG) at $257.49, down 0.55% at the close on October 2, 2026. That dated observation does not establish what drove the price change, and a stock quote can change quickly. Yahoo Finance’s CEG chart is the cited source for that snapshot.

Amazon’s Calvert Cliffs agreement is distinct from other announced deals involving technology companies and nuclear plants. Their capacity, timing, power arrangements and regulatory status differ, so they are not interchangeable measures of one data-center power buildout.

| Amazon and Constellation at Calvert Cliffs (2026) | 20 years; 690 MW including planned uprate capacity; approximately 190 MW of new generation expected in 2030–2032 | Output continues to flow to PJM; includes a retail supply arrangement for Amazon operations in the 13-state PJM market. Company announcement |
| AWS and Talen at Susquehanna (reported by EIA in 2024) | EIA reported 960 MW of contracted capacity, planned increases in 120 MW increments, and an option for AWS to cap its commitment at 480 MW | Separate Pennsylvania plant and agreement. EIA noted uncertainties in data-center construction, the pace of demand growth and efficiency gains; these are historical observations from 2024, not a current demand forecast. EIA overview, October 1, 2024 |
| Microsoft and Constellation at Crane (2024) | Constellation’s November 2024 SEC-filed results estimated about $1.6 billion in capital spending from operations for the then-planned restart and targeted 2028 for service | Separate Three Mile Island Unit 1 project, renamed the Crane Clean Energy Center; the target was subject to regulatory approvals and NRC safety and environmental review. | Meta and Constellation at Clinton (2025) | Meta said its 20-year agreement would begin in 2027 and cover 1,121 MW, including 30 MW of incremental capacity | Separate Illinois plant and customer. Meta announcement |
The comparisons show why it helps to check each agreement’s term, contracted capacity, treatment of planned increases, expected start date, grid arrangement and approval status rather than treating every nuclear deal as a direct power connection to a data center.
