Choose the Fire HD 8 (2024, 12th Generation) if your priorities are a much lower published starting price, Fire OS, or microSD expansion up to 1TB. The Alexa Tablet 8 starts at $229.99 in the announced US configuration, while Amazon’s September 2026 Fire HD 8 article lists the lineup from $99.99. Those are different product families, and the year matters: Amazon also lists a separate Fire HD 8 (2022, 12th Generation).
The comparison below uses Amazon’s published specifications and claims. Prices, stock, regional availability and app support can change, and the battery figures are not results from a controlled head-to-head test.

First, identify the two tablets correctly
Amazon’s naming makes this comparison easier to get wrong than it should be. The newer device is the Amazon Alexa Tablet 8 (2026), a first-generation Alexa Tablet model. The competing Fire device is the Amazon Fire HD 8 (2024, 12th Generation). Amazon also has a Fire HD 8 (2022, 12th Generation), so “12th Gen” by itself is not precise enough when you are checking a listing, case or software article.

The Alexa Tablet 8 figures come from Amazon Developer specifications last updated October 8, 2026 and Amazon’s launch announcement. Fire HD 8 figures come from Amazon’s current Fire HD specifications and its article updated September 1, 2026. Manufacturer “up to” battery numbers use different test descriptions, so they do not establish a one-hour real-world advantage.
What the Alexa Tablet 8 does better
A newer operating system and broader app marketplace
The Alexa Tablet 8 runs Android 16, identified by Amazon as API level 36, and includes full Google Play Store access alongside Amazon applications. That gives it the more current software foundation of the two and makes it the more natural choice if you already depend on an Android app distributed through Google Play.
The Fire HD 8 runs Fire OS 8. Amazon’s specification page uses Android 11/API level 30 as its Android version and API reference for that system. Fire OS is a separate Amazon software environment, so app availability, update behavior and account integration can differ from a conventional Android tablet. Check every must-have app on the exact model and in your country before buying; an app’s availability is not established merely by the tablet’s operating-system label.
Faster wireless hardware on paper
Wi‑Fi 6 gives the Alexa Tablet 8 a newer wireless standard than the Fire HD 8’s dual-band 802.11ac support. A compatible Wi‑Fi 6 router and a busy network are where the newer standard is most likely to matter. It does not increase the speed of an internet connection beyond what your broadband service and router can deliver. Bluetooth 5.3 BLE is also newer than the Fire tablet’s Bluetooth 5.2 LE.
A larger, sharper compact display
The Alexa Tablet 8 has an 8.7-inch IPS panel with 1340 × 800 resolution and a stated 180 pixels per inch. The Fire HD 8 has an 8-inch IPS display at 1280 × 800. The Alexa tablet therefore gives you a little more physical space for reading, video controls and split-screen elements while remaining a small tablet. Neither specification establishes brightness, refresh rate, color gamut or outdoor readability, so do not infer those qualities from resolution alone.
More capable cameras
Amazon lists a 5MP front camera and an 8MP rear camera with autofocus for the Alexa Tablet 8. The Fire HD 8 has a 2MP front camera and a 5MP rear camera, with no autofocus specification listed. The newer tablet should be the safer pick for video calls, document snapshots and close subjects, but megapixel counts do not guarantee better image processing or low-light results.

More modern processor configuration
The Alexa Tablet 8 uses a MediaTek MT8189 with two Cortex-A78 cores at 2.0GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0GHz. The Fire HD 8 uses a MediaTek MT8169A with six Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0GHz. The Alexa model’s newer high-performance cores and 4GB of RAM suggest more headroom for demanding multitasking than the 3GB Fire configuration, but no independent benchmark or hands-on performance test is available here. Treat this as a specification-based advantage, not a measured frame-rate or app-launch claim.

Where the Fire HD 8 remains the practical choice
A much lower entry price
Amazon’s Fire HD 8 article, updated September 1, 2026, says the lineup starts at $99.99. That is price context from an Amazon article, not a guaranteed live checkout price, and the least expensive configuration may have less RAM and storage than the model you are comparing. The Alexa Tablet 8 announcement gives a $229.99 starting price for a 4GB RAM, 64GB storage model. Compare the actual configuration and current listing price rather than assuming the two “starting at” figures represent identical hardware.
Storage that can grow later
Fire HD 8 configurations include 32GB/3GB and 64GB/4GB, and Amazon supports microSD cards up to 1TB. That is useful for downloaded video, music, photos and documents when internal storage is tight. The Alexa Tablet 8 is listed with 64GB or 128GB of internal storage and no external-storage option. If you keep large offline libraries, the Fire’s card slot can be more valuable than its lower purchase price.
Amazon does not identify a specific microSD card, speed class or bundled card in the supplied specifications. Confirm card compatibility and the tablet’s storage settings before buying an accessory, and remember that a card’s advertised capacity is not the same as usable free space.
A simpler fit for an Amazon-centered household
Fire OS is designed around Amazon’s own services and interface. If your household already uses that environment and does not require an app that is unavailable there, the Fire HD 8 may meet basic reading, browsing, streaming and casual-use needs at a lower outlay. This is an ecosystem preference, not a claim that every Amazon service or third-party app behaves identically on every Fire model.
Alexa, Alexa+ and Show Mode: the crucial distinction
Alexa+ on the new tablet
Amazon says Alexa+ is built into the Alexa Tablet family, with voice and touch access, live sessions and optional screen intelligence. In the October 8, 2026 launch announcement, Amazon Devices Vice President Kevin Keith described it this way: “Alexa+ is built into the core of every tablet—from a personalized home screen to hands-free live sessions.” That integration is the defining reason to consider the Alexa Tablet 8 over a conventional Fire tablet.

- Fire HD 8 offers an 8" HD display for seamless streaming and gaming, coupled with a 5MP rear facing camera for photos—with a thin, light, durable design.
- Responsive with all day battery life - Includes 3GB RAM (50% more than 2022 release), 32GB of storage, and up to 1 TB of expandable storage (sold separately). Up to 13 hours of reading, browsing the web, watching videos, gaming, and listening to music at home and on-the-go.

- Stream or download your favorite shows, movies, and games (like Minecraft, Roblox, and more). Enjoy your favorite content from Facebook, Hulu, Instagram, TikTok, and more through Amazon’s Appstore (Google Play not supported. Subscription for some apps required).
Amazon also says its on-screen intelligence features are off by default and require deliberate opt-in. According to the announcement, users choose when Alexa listens, sees the screen and remembers. Those controls matter if you want assistant features but do not want continuous screen-aware behavior. Review the current privacy settings during setup, because feature names and controls can change with software updates.
Fire HD 8 is not an Echo Show replacement
Some Fire tablets support hands-free Alexa, but Amazon’s current Show Mode support page explicitly lists Fire HD 8 (12th Generation) among the models that are not compatible with Show Mode. Do not buy the 2024 Fire HD 8 expecting the full Echo Show-style interface or a supported always-on kitchen display. Amazon’s general Alexa documentation does not establish that every Alexa feature works on every Fire model, so verify the behavior you need for the exact model and region.
Storage and configuration decisions
Choose the Alexa Tablet 8 capacity before ordering
Because no external storage is listed for the Alexa Tablet 8, the internal choice is permanent for normal ownership. The 64GB version is the announced base model. Choose 128GB if you expect to keep many downloaded shows, games, photos, large PDFs or offline maps, or if you want more room after system files and updates consume part of the advertised capacity.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- 64GB: sensible for streaming-first use, web browsing, reading and cloud-backed files.
- 128GB: safer for frequent downloads, larger games, camera content and long-term use without a card slot.
Use the Fire’s microSD slot strategically
The Fire HD 8’s up-to-1TB microSD support lets you defer a larger-storage purchase. A 32GB model can be attractive at the lowest price, but its 3GB RAM and smaller internal capacity make it a different proposition from the 4GB/64GB version. If the price gap is modest, compare the 4GB/64GB configuration first, then add the cost of a suitable card if you need local media.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery claims and portability
Amazon claims up to 14 hours of video playback for the Alexa Tablet 8 and up to 13 hours of battery life for the Fire HD 8. These statements are not equivalent test descriptions: one specifies video playback while the other uses the broader phrase “battery life.” Brightness, wireless activity, app mix, audio volume, downloads and standby time can all change actual endurance. There is no independent side-by-side battery result to rank them.
Amazon gives the Alexa Tablet 8 a weight of 329 grams and thickness of 7.95mm. The official material used for this comparison does not provide a directly comparable Fire HD 8 weight, so a portability verdict based on grams would be unsupported. The Alexa model’s 8.7-inch screen is larger, while both devices remain in the compact-tablet class.

Cameras and everyday tasks
For video calls, the Alexa Tablet 8’s 5MP front camera has a clear specification advantage over the Fire HD 8’s 2MP front camera. The rear camera is 8MP with autofocus on the Alexa model versus 5MP on the Fire, with autofocus not listed for the Fire. Those differences make the Alexa tablet more suitable for scanning a page, photographing a nearby object or joining calls where front-camera detail matters.

Neither product should be selected as a dedicated camera. Amazon’s published specifications do not state sensor size, stabilization, flash behavior, maximum video resolution or low-light performance. Treat the camera numbers as capability indicators rather than guarantees of image quality.
Price, launch timing and regional availability
The Alexa Tablet 8’s announced US starting price is $229.99 for the listed 4GB/64GB model. Amazon announced US purchase availability for October 13, 2026, with shipping scheduled for October 14, 2026. The Fire HD 8 article updated September 1, 2026 says the lineup starts at $99.99 and describes it as available.
Prices and inventory are volatile. Check the live listing for your country, the exact RAM/storage configuration, delivery date, included accessories and any temporary discount before making a decision. Amazon lists the Alexa Tablet 8 marketplace availability across the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Canada, Mexico, France, Italy, Spain and Australia, but regional launch timing, pricing, configuration and app availability can differ. The specific October 2026 shipping sequence in the announcement applies to the United States, Mexico and Canada first, followed by the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
Which tablet should you buy?
Buy the Amazon Alexa Tablet 8 when these priorities matter
- You want Android 16 and Google Play Store access rather than Fire OS.
- You rely on Alexa+ voice, touch, live-session or optional screen-intelligence features.
- You prefer the 8.7-inch display and newer Wi‑Fi 6 wireless standard.
- You make frequent video calls or want the higher-resolution cameras and rear autofocus.
- You can spend about $229.99 for the announced 4GB/64GB starting configuration.
- You are comfortable choosing 64GB or 128GB up front because no external storage is listed.
Buy the Fire HD 8 (2024) when these priorities matter
- You need the lowest published entry price and are willing to verify the live configuration.
- You want microSD expansion up to 1TB for local media and documents.
- You prefer Fire OS and an Amazon-centered tablet experience.
- You do not need Show Mode or assume that hands-free Alexa works like an Echo Show.
- Your app requirements are confirmed on Fire OS 8 for the exact model and region.
Use this final decision sequence
- Write down your must-have apps. Confirm each one in the relevant store for the exact tablet and country before comparing discounts.
- Decide whether expandable storage is essential. If yes, the Fire HD 8 is the straightforward choice because the Alexa Tablet 8 has no listed external-storage support.
- Set your Alexa expectation. Pick the Alexa Tablet 8 for built-in Alexa+; do not count on Show Mode with the Fire HD 8 (12th Gen).
- Compare like-for-like prices. Match RAM and storage, include a microSD card if needed, and check the current listing rather than relying on an archived “starting at” price.
- Choose for the screen and camera needs you actually have. The Alexa model has the larger display and higher camera specifications, but no independent image or display test establishes the size of the real-world advantage.
Important limitations before purchase
- No independent benchmark, hands-on test, battery test or app-by-app compatibility audit is established for this comparison.
- Amazon’s battery figures are manufacturer estimates with different wording, not a controlled contest.
- Amazon does not publish a comparable Fire HD 8 weight in the material used here, so portability should not be judged by an assumed weight difference.
- Storage capacities are advertised totals; available space will be lower after the operating system and preinstalled software.
- Regional software, pricing, stock, launch dates and app catalogs can differ from the US context described above.
- Confirm the model year when purchasing accessories: Fire HD 8 (2022) and Fire HD 8 (2024) both use the 12th-generation label.
Bottom line
The Alexa Tablet 8 is the stronger technical and software choice: Android 16, Google Play, Wi‑Fi 6, a larger 8.7-inch panel, more capable listed cameras and Alexa+ integration justify its higher announced price for buyers who will use those features. The Fire HD 8 (2024) is the value-and-storage choice: its published starting price is far lower, and a microSD card can expand local capacity to 1TB. Decide first whether you need Google Play and Alexa+ or expandable storage and a lower entry cost; that single choice usually determines the right compact tablet.
