Amateur Spacewatcher Uses 14-Inch Telescope to Spot China’s Secretive Shenlong Spaceplane

An Austrian amateur space watcher has captured rare images of China’s Shenlong reusable spaceplane in orbit. Felix Schöfbänker used a 14-inch telescope mirror, automated satellite-tracking equipment and video stacking to record the vehicle during its third reported mission. The pictures reveal a broadly aircraft-like shape, but they do not establish the spacecraft’s exact dimensions, the identity of its apparent appendages or what the mission was doing.

How an amateur observer photographed Shenlong

Felix Schöfbänker, an experienced observer in Upper Austria, recorded Shenlong during a flyover. His setup could automatically track a fast-moving satellite and keep it centered while the telescope collected video.

He then selected the clearest frames, averaged them together and sharpened the result. As Schöfbänker explained to Space.com, “I make these images by taking a video during the flyover and then stacking (averaging out) and sharpening the best frames.” This process can make a faint, blurred target easier to study, but it cannot recover details that the telescope, lighting and viewing angle did not capture.

What the images show—and what they cannot prove

The processed frames show a grainy, aircraft-like object in low Earth orbit. A group of features appears at one end, but their identity is unresolved. Schöfbänker said they could be solar panels, an antenna or another structure, and that the spacecraft’s orientation and illumination might conceal other features.

  • The apparent appendages are not confirmed solar arrays.
  • The images do not reveal a reliable wingspan or detailed surface design.
  • They show general form, not the spacecraft’s instruments, experiments or mission payload.

Estimated size and orbit

Schöfbänker estimated the vehicle at about 30 feet (10 meters) long, while cautioning that the estimate could be wrong. That figure is an amateur observation, not an official Chinese specification, and he could not determine the wingspan.

When Space.com reported the sighting on 5 August 2024, the spacecraft had recently lowered its orbit to roughly 217 miles (350 kilometers) above Earth. Orbital altitude changes over a mission, so this was a reported position at that time rather than a permanent operating altitude.

Which Shenlong mission was photographed?

The 2024 sighting report identified the photographed vehicle as Shenlong’s third flight, launched on 14 December 2023 by a Long March 2F rocket. Public mission records remain difficult to reconcile because a later Space.com chronology published in February 2026 lists a different sequence:

Mission listing in the February 2026 report Launch date Reported duration
First September 2020 Approximately two days
Second May 2023 276 days
Third September 2024 266 days
Fourth 6 February 2026, from Jiuquan Not stated in the cited report

The December 2023 launch identification and this later chronology are not fully consistent in the publicly cited reporting. China has disclosed too little about the program to independently resolve every mission designation. The duration figures above are the values attributed to Space.com’s February 2026 summary, not independently released spacecraft specifications.

What is Shenlong?

Shenlong is a robotic, reusable Chinese spaceplane that launches vertically on a rocket and is designed to land on a runway. Space.com has described its overall design as broadly resembling the U.S. Space Force’s X-37B. That resemblance does not establish equal size, performance, equipment or mission purpose.

China has released few technical details. Xinhua, quoted by Space.com, said the program “will pave the way for more convenient and affordable round-trip methods for the peaceful use of space in the future.” That is a general stated purpose, not a public description of the experiments carried on the photographed flight.

What might the spacecraft be doing?

The mission objectives of the photographed flight have not been publicly disclosed in the cited reporting. There is evidence that Shenlong has performed more than simple point-to-point flight, but each observation needs to be kept separate from speculation about intent.

Reported object release and proximity operations

The CSIS Aerospace Security Project’s 2024 assessment said LeoLabs observed Shenlong’s second mission release an object and conduct formation flying, docking and recapture operations. Those are technically significant orbital capabilities. CSIS also wrote, “There are no indications that China’s spaceplanes would act as counterspace weapons.”

CSIS cautioned that rendezvous and proximity operations, object releases, docking and capture are capabilities relevant to an orbital anti-satellite capability. Relevance is not proof of a weapon, a hostile mission or a Chinese decision to use the vehicle that way.

A later LeoLabs observation

LeoLabs reported another unexplained event near Shenlong’s fourth mission in 2026. According to Space.com, its New Zealand radar detected an unknown object at 02:30 UTC on 22 June. After additional observations, LeoLabs assessed with high confidence that the object had been released from Shenlong.

The report does not establish the object’s design or purpose, and it was not presented as a public Chinese confirmation. It therefore adds evidence of an observed release, not an explanation of what the released object did.

Why the sighting matters

Space-based surveillance normally depends on government sensors and specialist tracking networks. Schöfbänker’s observation shows what a highly capable amateur setup can contribute: a time-stamped view of a classified or sparsely documented spacecraft that may otherwise be represented mainly by launch footage and orbital data.

  • 9x50 FINDERSCOPE INCLUDED: Center objects perfectly in the eyepiece with a high-quality finderscope with 9x magnification.

It also demonstrates the limits of optical observation. Even with a 14-inch mirror and automated tracking, the result is a small, noisy image. Processing improves contrast and consistency across frames; it does not turn an uncertain silhouette into a verified engineering drawing.

What can be said with confidence

  • An Austrian amateur observer recorded Shenlong during an orbital pass using a 14-inch telescope mirror, automatic tracking and stacked video frames.
  • The spacecraft has a reusable, runway-landing spaceplane design and was launched on a Long March 2F rocket for the flight described in the 2024 sighting report.
  • The images show an aircraft-like outline and unresolved features at one end.
  • The roughly 10-meter length is an observer’s estimate, not an official specification.
  • China’s public statements and the cited reporting do not disclose the photographed mission’s objectives.
  • Reported releases, rendezvous and docking demonstrate observed capabilities, but do not by themselves prove an anti-satellite mission or hostile intent.

Could an ordinary telescope reproduce the image?

The report names no consumer telescope model or complete equipment list. Its directly supported hardware detail is the 14-inch mirror, together with automated satellite tracking and post-processing. A smaller, manually operated telescope may record a moving point of light, but there is no evidence that it would produce comparable resolved imagery. Atmospheric conditions, target brightness, viewing geometry, tracking accuracy and image-processing skill all matter.
