On supported Acer computers running Windows, pressing Alt and F10 together while the Acer logo is on screen during startup opens a recovery screen instead of normal Windows. Depending on the model and its recovery setup, that screen is either Acer Recovery Management or the Windows Recovery Environment, and the choices it offers can include resetting Windows and erasing your personal files. Treat Alt+F10 as a recovery procedure with possible data loss, not a harmless keyboard shortcut.
Which Acer computers this applies to
Acer describes Alt+F10 as a startup recovery shortcut for supported Windows computers. Its support articles cover several generations of hardware, and the labels and recovery paths differ between them. The shortcut is not guaranteed on every Acer device, so check your model’s support page if it does not respond as described below. Acer’s Alt+F10 startup recovery article is the primary reference for the timing and choices covered here.

How to press Alt+F10 at startup
- If the computer is stuck or the current startup attempt has failed, shut it down completely. If it does not respond, hold the power button until it switches off. Acer’s guidance includes powering the system fully off before restarting when necessary.
- If the computer’s instructions call for it, connect AC power before you start. Acer’s older recovery guide specifies connecting AC power for this procedure.
- Press the power button to turn the computer on.
- As soon as the Acer logo appears, press Alt and F10 together. Acer’s wording is “as soon as your computer starts booting up,” so the window is short. If you miss it, shut down fully and try again.
- Read the screen that appears before choosing anything. The next screen is either Acer Recovery Management or the Windows Recovery Environment, as described below.
What the shortcut opens
Acer Recovery Management
Acer’s guide on using Recovery Management outside of Windows says that when the computer has a hidden recovery partition, the shortcut leads to Acer Recovery Management. The interface and options in this environment vary by model, so follow the labels on your screen rather than a screenshot from another Acer computer.

Windows Recovery Environment
If there is no hidden partition, the shortcut opens Windows Recovery Environment instead. Acer’s Switching OS guide states: “Note: If there is no hidden partition, the Windows’ Recovery Environment page will appear after pressing <ALT>+<F10>.”

Choosing between Keep my files and Remove everything
On Windows 10 and 11, Acer’s factory reset guide offers reset choices that differ in what happens to your data. The labels below are the ones Acer uses; your screen may word them differently.

Acer’s reset guidance tells users to save personal data somewhere the reset will not erase before proceeding. Because Remove everything deletes personal files, copy anything you cannot replace to a location outside the computer’s internal drive. An external hard drive is one practical option. Acer does not require a particular drive, capacity, or model. Before you start the reset, confirm that the copied files open correctly.

When Alt+F10 does not work
Windows opens normally
- The shortcut may have been pressed after the logo had already disappeared. Shut the computer down fully and try again, pressing Alt and F10 as soon as the logo appears.
- The device may use a different recovery configuration. If repeated attempts still load Windows, Acer’s support page for your exact model is the next place to check.
The recovery environment is missing
- Acer states that replacing the original drive can mean Recovery Management is no longer present. In that case, recovery disks may be needed.
- Look up your exact model in Acer’s support information to see which recovery media are available for it. The Recovery Management guide covers the hidden partition, drive replacement, and recovery media, and includes a data-loss warning.
The screens differ from Acer’s instructions
- Acer’s older recovery instructions say that Windows setup screens follow the recovery process. Complete those prompts after recovery finishes.
- Exact steps and labels vary across recovery versions, so use the choices on your own screen and avoid assuming an option is available because another guide describes it.
