Choose RASCI when specialists actively help the person doing the work. Choose DACI or RAPID when the real failure is slow, disputed, or ownerless decision-making. Technical and business teams often need both views: a task-ownership matrix for execution and a decision-rights model for approvals. Map each row to a concrete outcome—such as architecture approval, security sign-off, release readiness, incident response, benefits measurement, or retirement—then review it with the named people and obtain leadership approval.
Start with the problem, not the acronym
Responsibility frameworks are not interchangeable labels for the same spreadsheet. They answer different questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- RACI: Who performs a task, who is ultimately answerable, who must provide input, and who needs updates?
- RASCI: The same task view, with an explicit Support role for people who materially help the Responsible role.
- DACI: Who drives a decision, who approves it, who contributes, and who is informed?
- RAPID: Who recommends, agrees, performs, provides input, and decides?
The practical choice depends on whether work is stuck in execution or in decision flow. A release can have a perfectly clear person building it while still lacking a clear approver. Conversely, executives may agree on who decides a funding question while no one owns the resulting architecture, testing, or operations work. One matrix cannot reliably express both situations without becoming unreadable.
| Primary problem | Best starting model | What to add or keep separate |
|---|---|---|
| Deliverables have no clear owner | RACI | Use concrete task or outcome rows and one accountable role per row. |
| Many specialists help the person doing the work | RASCI | Use Support for hands-on assistance; reserve Consulted for two-way advice. |
| Approvals or meetings stall | DACI | Keep a separate execution matrix if the work itself also needs assignment. |
| Decisions require a formal recommendation and agreement path | RAPID | Define how Agree and Decide interact, including escalation. |
| Technical and business responsibilities cross a product lifecycle | Combined approach | Use outcome-based RACI/RASCI rows plus DACI or RAPID for consequential decisions. |
What RACI does well—and where it stops
RACI is a responsibility assignment matrix for activities, tasks, or deliverables. The standard vocabulary is:
#1 Best Overall
- [Ultra-Lightweight Ear Buds Designed for Small Ears] Each earbud weighs only 3.7g and features a compact, ergonomic in-ear design made especially for small ears. Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping. The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.
- [Bluetooth 5.3 & Stable Connection] Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast pairing, stable wireless performance, and reduced dropouts as you move around home or office.
- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Responsible: the role doing the work.
- Accountable: the role ultimately answerable for the result.
- Consulted: a person or group that provides two-way input before the work is completed.
- Informed: a person or group kept up to date, usually through one-way communication.
Microsoft Learn’s guidance is straightforward: list the tasks and roles, assign the RACI values, ensure every task has one accountable person, and share the completed matrix with the team. That last step matters because a cell is not an agreement merely because it appears in a document.
For operational clarity, designate one primary Responsible role as well as one Accountable role for each row. If several people are doing substantial work, either split the deliverable into smaller rows or use RASCI so the assistance is visible. Multiple people can be consulted, but multiple competing accountable owners create an escalation problem rather than solving one.
RACI is a poor fit when the key question is “Who has the authority to decide?” A task may list an accountable product leader while architecture, security, finance, and a steering group all believe they can veto it. RACI alone does not define a recommendation process, a binding approval, or a tie-breaker. Add a decision-rights model for those cases.

RASCI: when support is real work, not just advice
RASCI adds S—Support to RACI. The European Commission’s PM² guidance describes RASCI (pronounced “rasky”) as a Responsibility Assignment Matrix and defines Support as helping the Responsible role complete the activity. Consulted remains a two-way input role; Support is active assistance.
This distinction is useful in technical work where a single deliverable depends on several specialists:
- A platform engineer may be Responsible for a deployment pipeline while a security engineer Supports by implementing policy checks.
- A product manager may be Responsible for a business case while finance Supports the cost model and an architecture group is Consulted on feasibility.
- An incident commander may be Responsible for coordinating response while site reliability, communications, and customer support provide Support.
OpenProject’s PM² documentation emphasizes one Responsible person and one Accountable person for a given task. Treat that as a useful discipline even where your organization permits more than one Responsible entry: name a primary owner, then identify other hands-on contributors as Support or as separate sub-rows.

Support should not become a synonym for everyone who attends a meeting. If a group only reviews a proposal and gives advice, use Consulted. If it receives status updates without an action, use Informed. Overusing Support hides the capacity actually required to deliver the work and makes ownership look broader than it is.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDACI and RAPID: decision-rights alternatives
DACI and RAPID are best treated as decision frameworks rather than replacements for every RACI row. Atlassian’s comparison of the models distinguishes their focus from RACI: they clarify who moves a decision forward, who has approval or decision authority, and who contributes information. Exact definitions and governance rules vary, so your organization must write them down before using the letters.
DACI
- Driver: coordinates the decision process, frames the question, gathers evidence, and keeps it moving.
- Approver: gives the binding approval. Decide whether there is one approver or an explicit escalation path; do not leave this implicit.
- Contributors: supply analysis, options, constraints, or recommendations.
- Informed: receives the decision and its implications.
DACI is useful when meetings repeatedly end with “we need to take this away” or when a proposal has many contributors but no person responsible for reaching a decision. The Driver is not automatically the Approver. Keeping those roles separate prevents the coordinator from being mistaken for the authority.
RAPID
- Recommend: develops the proposal and recommendation.
- Agree: confirms specific non-negotiable constraints or gives formal concurrence where required.
- Perform: carries out the decision.
- Input: supplies evidence or specialist judgment.
- Decide: makes the final call.
RAPID can expose a different failure mode: everyone is asked for input, but no one is authorized to decide, or “Agree” is treated as an unlimited veto. Define what agreement covers, what happens when it is withheld, and who resolves a conflict. The Perform role also makes the handoff from decision to execution explicit; you may still need RACI or RASCI to assign the detailed work.
RACI, RASCI, DACI, and RAPID compared
| Model | Primary job | Typical granularity | Distinct vocabulary | Best signal | Maintenance concern |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RACI | Task execution and accountability | One deliverable, activity, or outcome | Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed | Every deliverable has an owner and an accountable role | Rows become stale when teams or responsibilities change |
| RASCI | Task execution with explicit assistance | One deliverable or activity with hands-on contributors | Responsible, Accountable, Support, Consulted, Informed | Support work is visible instead of being mislabeled as advice | Support can spread to too many groups unless contribution is defined |
| DACI | Decision flow and approval | One decision | Driver, Approver, Contributors, Informed | A process has a coordinator and a named approval authority | Approver and escalation rules must be maintained |
| RAPID | Recommendation, agreement, execution, and final decision | One consequential decision | Recommend, Agree, Perform, Input, Decide | The organization can distinguish advice, required agreement, performance, and authority | Definitions vary; ambiguity about Agree or Decide undermines the model |
No official guidance cited here establishes a validated statistic showing that one model consistently outperforms the others. Select according to the failure you can observe, not according to a claim that one acronym is universally superior.

Map outcomes across the technical and business lifecycle
Job titles are too vague for a useful matrix. “Engineering,” “the business,” or “security” may contain several teams with different authority. Write rows as outcomes that someone can deliver, approve, measure, or operate.

Microsoft’s Center of Excellence example applies RACI across strategy and guardrails, funding, backlog priority, architecture standards, building and testing, release approval, production operations, incident response, risk review, value measurement, and retirement. That lifecycle view prevents a common gap: assigning ownership for launch while leaving operations, benefits, or decommissioning unowned.
| Outcome row | Execution view (RACI/RASCI) | Decision view (DACI/RAPID) | Evidence of completion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strategy and guardrails | Accountable business or portfolio owner; Responsible strategy lead; Consulted architecture, security, finance | Driver frames the policy decision; Approver or Decide role is named | Published principles, constraints, and review date |
| Funding and investment | Responsible finance or portfolio analyst; Support from product and delivery teams | Contributors provide options; Approver/Decide role authorizes funding | Approved funding decision with assumptions |
| Backlog priority | Responsible product manager; Support from delivery and data specialists | Driver runs prioritization; contributors provide evidence; decision authority is explicit | Versioned priority list and rationale |
| Architecture standards | Responsible architecture lead; Support from platform teams; Consulted security and operations | Architecture authority is the Approver or Decide role | Recorded standard, exceptions, and expiry |
| Build and test | Responsible engineering team; Support from quality, security, and platform specialists | Use DACI/RAPID only for disputed design or scope decisions | Test evidence and accepted defects or risks |
| Release readiness | Responsible release lead; Accountable product or service owner; Support from operations and security | Driver gathers readiness evidence; Approver/Decide role is named | Release decision, conditions, and rollback owner |
| Production operations | Responsible service owner or operations team; Support from reliability and vendor-management roles | Decision model applies to risk acceptance or major changes | Service objectives, monitoring, and on-call ownership |
| Incident response | Responsible incident commander; Support from engineering, security, communications, and support | Decide who can authorize emergency actions and customer communications | Incident record, actions, and follow-up owner |
| Risk review | Responsible risk owner; Consulted legal, security, compliance, and finance | Approver/Decide role accepts, transfers, mitigates, or rejects risk | Risk decision, treatment, and due date |
| Value measurement | Responsible product or benefits lead; Support from analytics and finance | Decision authority sets success thresholds and response to variance | Benefits measure, baseline, owner, and review cadence |
| Retirement | Responsible service owner; Support from operations, security, records, and customer teams | Approver/Decide role authorizes shutdown and residual-risk treatment | Decommission plan, data disposition, and closure record |
The entries in this table are a pattern, not a universal allocation. Replace role names with roles that can actually perform or approve each outcome in your organization.
How to build a matrix that people can use
- Inventory outcomes and decisions. Start with the lifecycle, deliverables, approvals, and recurring decisions. Do not begin with a department list. Include work after launch and work that ends a service.
- Separate execution from authority. Mark rows that describe work for RACI or RASCI. Mark rows that describe a choice, approval, veto, or risk acceptance for DACI or RAPID. Link the decision row to the resulting execution rows.
- Define the vocabulary in plain language. Write what Responsible, Accountable, Support, Consulted, Informed, Driver, Approver, Agree, Perform, Input, and Decide mean locally. State whether one person or a group may occupy each position and what “approval” legally or operationally means.
- Assign one accountable role per outcome. If two leaders appear equally accountable, split the outcome or establish a superior escalation authority. Do not solve a conflict by adding another accountable cell.
- Name a primary performer or driver. A team can assist, but someone must coordinate the work or decision. Use Support or Contributors for additional effort rather than a vague cluster of Responsible entries.
- Check for empty ownership and excessive consultation. Every row needs a path to completion. A long Consulted or Informed list is a communication burden; remove anyone who does not need to influence or receive the result.
- Validate assignments with the named people. Ask each Responsible, Accountable, Support, Driver, Approver, or Decide role whether it has the authority, capacity, skills, and time implied by the cell.
- Publish where work is managed. Put the matrix beside the roadmap, service catalog, risk register, incident process, or decision log—not in an isolated document that teams cannot find.
- Obtain leadership approval. AWS guidance specifically recommends leadership approval for a completed RASCI chart. Approval makes escalation and cross-team commitments enforceable rather than aspirational.
- Set a review trigger. Revisit the matrix when the operating model, product stage, team boundary, ownership, or governance forum changes. A scheduled review is useful, but event-based review catches the changes that make a matrix inaccurate overnight.
How to handle common technical and business scenarios
Architecture approval
Use a RASCI row for producing the architecture decision record and a DACI or RAPID row for choosing among competing designs. The architect may be Responsible or Recommend, while an architecture authority is Approver or Decide. Security and operations can be Support or Input when they implement controls or provide evidence; they should not become accidental veto holders unless the governance rule says so.
Security sign-off
Separate preparing the threat model and controls from accepting residual risk. The security team may Support the assessment, but the business or service risk owner should be the Accountable role for accepting exposure where policy permits. A decision model should identify who can reject the release, who can grant an exception, and how an unresolved disagreement escalates.
Release readiness
Assign one Responsible release coordinator and one Accountable service or product owner. Use Support for testing, operations, security, documentation, and customer readiness when those groups perform concrete activities. Use DACI or RAPID for the go/no-go decision so attendance at a readiness meeting is not mistaken for approval authority.
Incident response
RASCI is often clearer than RACI during an incident because communications, infrastructure, security, and customer-support teams actively assist the incident commander. A separate decision rule should identify who authorizes emergency changes, public statements, customer notification, and risk acceptance. Keep the matrix short enough to use under pressure and link to detailed runbooks for procedures.

Business outcomes and benefits
Do not stop assigning responsibility at delivery. Name an Accountable benefits owner and a Responsible analyst or product lead for measuring adoption, revenue, cost reduction, risk reduction, or another agreed outcome. A RAPID or DACI row can define who changes scope or funding when results miss the threshold.
Service retirement
Retirement needs its own row because the owner may differ from the launch team. Assign responsibility for data retention, customer communication, contract closure, infrastructure shutdown, security review, and evidence of completion. The final shutdown decision should have one explicit Approver or Decide role.
Failure modes and repairs
Every cell says “Consulted”
Symptom: meetings are crowded, decisions are slow, and no one knows whose input is binding. Repair: move people who do hands-on work to Support, move the authority to Accountable or Approver/Decide, and leave Consulted only for input that can change the result.
Several people are accountable
Symptom: conflicting instructions are escalated sideways. Repair: divide the outcome into independently owned rows or designate one accountable role with named consultation and escalation rights.
The approver is confused with the driver
Symptom: the person organizing a proposal is treated as having final authority. Repair: use DACI’s Driver and Approver separately, or RAPID’s Recommend and Decide separately, and record the approval boundary.

Best Value
The document is correct but unused
Symptom: people discover the matrix only after a dispute. Repair: publish it in the system where the work occurs, reference it in decision records and runbooks, and review it with stakeholders before leadership approval.

Symptom: former teams remain listed, or a role has authority in theory but no capacity in practice. Repair: trigger a review whenever team boundaries, product stage, operating model, or governance forums change.
A practical operating pattern for mixed portfolios
Many organizations do not need to choose one acronym for everything. A workable pattern is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Maintain an outcome-based RASCI matrix for lifecycle execution.
- Attach a DACI or RAPID record to each material decision, such as architecture approval, funding, risk acceptance, release, or retirement.
- Link the decision record to the execution rows it creates or changes.
- Use one accountable role for each outcome and one approval or decision authority for each consequential choice.
- Review both views together when a product moves from discovery to delivery, delivery to operations, or operations to retirement.
This keeps the execution map readable while giving leaders a precise way to resolve authority disputes. It also makes changes traceable: a new decision authority can be updated without rewriting every task row, and a team change can be reflected in execution assignments without silently changing who may approve risk.
Decision checklist
- Is the row a deliverable or activity? Start with RACI or RASCI.
- Is the row a decision, approval, veto, or risk acceptance? Use DACI or RAPID.
- Does someone provide hands-on assistance? Use Support rather than stretching Consulted.
- Can you identify exactly one accountable role for the outcome?
- Can you identify who has final approval or decision authority?
- Are technical and business roles tied to observable lifecycle outcomes rather than broad departments?
- Have the named people confirmed their authority and capacity?
- Has leadership approved the governance arrangement?
- Is the matrix published where the work and decisions are managed?
- Is there a trigger to revisit it when teams, products, or operating models change?
Bottom line for choosing an alternative
Keep RACI for a stable set of deliverables with unclear ownership. Upgrade to RASCI when support work is substantial and must be distinguished from advice. Choose DACI or RAPID when the central problem is stalled approval or unclear decision authority, and retain a separate task view when execution still needs assignment. For technical and business portfolios, map both views to lifecycle outcomes, validate them with stakeholders, and secure leadership approval before treating them as governance.
