If you want to take a view on a company’s earnings, share price or business outlook without using a yes-or-no event contract, the main alternatives are buying shares or ETFs, trading listed equity options, or using regulated copy-trading and managed services. They differ fundamentally in ownership, payoff, expiry, leverage, liquidity, fees, taxes and investor protection. For most investors seeking an investment rather than a one-time wager, shares or a diversified ETF are the clearest starting point. Options suit experienced investors who understand expiry and premium risk; copy trading suits people willing to delegate execution after checking authorization and controls.
What you are replacing: an event contract, not company ownership
Prediction-market products are commonly called event contracts. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) says these products have existed in U.S. regulated markets for more than two decades. They are derivatives linked to a future event or outcome. In the usual yes-or-no format, the contract settles according to a defined rule: one outcome pays the stated settlement amount and the other pays nothing (subject to the contract’s terms).

Because traders buy and sell the contract, its market price is often read as an implied probability. The CFTC describes this as a “transparent market-driven price” reflecting traders’ perceived probability of the event. European securities regulators use similar language for event contracts with a binary financial outcome dependent on a future yes-or-no event.

An event contract normally gives you no shares, no voting rights, no dividend claim and no continuing participation in the company’s cash generation. It also has a specified event date or settlement window. If your view is broader than one event—for example, that the company will compound value over several years—an ownership or portfolio instrument may express it more naturally.

1. Buy shares when you want the company’s long-term outcome
What a share position gives you
Buying common shares gives you an ownership interest in the company. Your return can come from a higher market price, dividends when the company declares them, and the business’s longer-term ability to generate cash. The position does not expire because an earnings date has passed. You can continue holding, add to it, reduce it or sell it when the market is open.
This is the most direct alternative when your thesis is “the business will be worth more over time,” rather than “a particular announcement will satisfy a binary rule.” Ownership also means accepting outcomes that an event contract does not capture: a company can miss near-term estimates yet create long-term value, or beat estimates while its valuation falls.
How to express an earnings or performance view with shares
- Define the thesis in a time frame: an upcoming quarter, the next year or a multi-year business case.
- Identify the variables that could change the thesis, such as revenue growth, margins, debt, competition, regulation or dilution.
- Choose a position size that you could tolerate if the share price falls substantially. A correct business thesis can still experience large interim drawdowns.
- Decide in advance what would invalidate the thesis and what evidence would justify holding through volatility.
- Review the company’s filings, earnings releases and guidance rather than treating a single headline result as the whole investment case.
Why an ETF may be better than one company
An exchange-traded fund (ETF) spreads exposure across a sector, index or investment theme. If your view is that an industry will benefit but you cannot reliably identify the winner, an ETF reduces the effect of one company’s product failure, accounting issue or management decision. Diversification does not remove market or valuation risk, and an ETF can fall when the entire sector or index declines.

Costs, taxes and protection to check
Share and ETF investors may pay commissions, bid-ask spreads, fund expenses and, in some markets, custody or account fees. Dividends and realized gains can have tax consequences that depend on your country, account type and holding period. Broker insolvency protections, investor-compensation limits and segregation of client assets also vary by jurisdiction. Confirm the rules with your broker and local regulator instead of assuming that an investment account has the same protections as a bank deposit.
2. Use listed equity options for a defined, time-limited view
Calls and puts in plain language
A listed call gives the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy shares at a specified strike price before or at the option’s expiry, depending on the contract style. A put gives the buyer the right to sell at the strike. The buyer pays a premium for that right. The option’s value is affected by the share price, strike, time remaining, expected volatility, interest rates and dividends.
Options can express a directional view with less upfront cash than purchasing the equivalent number of shares. That apparent efficiency is leverage, not a free reduction in risk. If the option expires out of the money, the buyer can lose the entire premium. The option can also lose value even when the share price moves in the expected direction if time decay or a fall in implied volatility offsets the move.
Illustrative call example
Assume, purely as an illustration, that a call covers 100 shares, has a $50 strike and costs $2 per share, or $200 before fees. At expiry, the break-even share price is approximately $52: the strike plus the premium per share. If the share is below $50, the call has no exercise value and the $200 premium is at risk. If the share is $60, the intrinsic value is $10 per share, or $1,000 for the contract; subtracting the $200 premium leaves $800 before fees and taxes. Actual contracts have their own multiplier, settlement terms and trading costs, so read the contract specification.

Terms you must understand before trading
- Strike: the contractual price used to determine exercise value.
- Expiry: the date or time after which the option ceases to exist. A short-dated option has less time for the thesis to work.
- Premium: the price paid by the buyer or received by the seller. It is not a refundable deposit.
- Assignment and exercise: an option seller may be assigned an obligation; an option buyer must understand how and when exercise or automatic exercise occurs.
- Liquidity: a wide bid-ask spread or low trading volume can make entering or exiting expensive.
- Contract multiplier: the number of shares or units represented by one contract. It determines the actual exposure.
When options are a reasonable substitute
Options can be useful when you want a defined maximum loss as a buyer, a hedge against an existing holding, or a structured income strategy. Investor education from CIBC notes that options can serve portfolio risk-management and income purposes. Those uses are more demanding than simply predicting whether an earnings number will be above or below an estimate.
Before placing an order, determine the maximum possible loss, the break-even price, the effect of a volatility change and what happens if the option is exercised or assigned. Selling uncovered options can create losses far beyond the premium received and is not an appropriate first substitute for an event contract. Many brokers require approval levels, financial information and options education before allowing particular strategies.
Earnings announcements add special risk
Options around earnings often reflect elevated expected volatility. After the announcement, that volatility can fall sharply even when the share moves in the predicted direction. This “volatility crush” can reduce an option’s price. An earnings trade should therefore specify not only “beat” or “miss,” but also the magnitude and timing of the expected price move, the chosen expiry and the premium paid.
3. Use copy trading or managed exposure when you want to delegate decisions
What copy trading does
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) defines copy trading as automatically copying another investor’s trades. Instead of selecting the company exposure yourself, you allocate money to a strategy or account whose trades are replicated in your account, subject to the service’s settings and execution rules.

This can be useful if your objective is to follow a documented process rather than make each trade manually. It is not the same as outsourcing responsibility for risk. Your result can differ from the displayed strategy because of execution timing, slippage, minimum trade sizes, fees, market closures or different leverage.
Regulatory status is part of the product
Depending on its structure, a copy-trading service may be treated as portfolio management or another regulated investment activity. Do not infer authorization from an app’s popularity, a performance chart or a social-media following. Verify the legal entity, license and permitted services with the regulator in your country.
- Check whether the provider is authorized to manage or arrange investments for residents of your jurisdiction.
- Confirm how client money and securities are held, and what investor-compensation or custody protections apply.
- Read the complete fee schedule, including performance fees, spreads, subscription charges, withdrawal fees and currency-conversion costs.
- Find out whether the strategy uses margin, CFDs or other leveraged instruments, and whether leverage can change without your separate approval.
- Review maximum drawdown policies, stop-copy settings, position limits and what happens when the lead account closes or changes strategy.
- Check the provider’s conflict-of-interest disclosures and whether the displayed record includes all accounts or only selected results.
Questions to ask before copying a strategy
Ask what instruments are traded, how positions are sized, how long the track record covers, and whether returns are shown before or after all fees. A past return is not a forecast. A strategy that has never experienced a severe market move may carry more risk than its recent chart suggests. Also establish whether you can close individual positions yourself or only stop copying the whole strategy.
4. Treat CFDs, spread bets and binary options as high-risk alternatives
Leveraged contracts without ownership
Contracts for difference (CFDs) and financial spread bets can provide price exposure without transferring ownership of the underlying shares. They commonly use leverage, so a small move against you can consume your margin quickly. Availability, tax treatment and legal status differ by country. They should not be presented as a simpler version of buying stock.
Best Value
Read the margin rules, overnight financing charges, close-out policy, guaranteed-stop limitations and counterparty disclosures. A product that appears to require little cash may create a larger economic exposure than the account balance suggests.
Binary options and all-or-nothing payoffs
Binary options generally pay a predetermined amount if a condition is met and nothing if it is not. That payoff resembles an event contract, but the platform, jurisdiction, pricing and conflict-of-interest arrangements matter. ASIC’s Moneysmart material reports that an ASIC review found about 75% of retail clients lost money trading binary options; the page does not state the review year. A separate binary-options warning reports that 74–77% of active retail binary-option investors lost money, again without stating the year on the page.
Those figures are not a universal forecast for every product or country, but they are a clear warning that a simple interface does not make an all-or-nothing trade simple or safe. Verify authorization, understand the settlement formula and do not deposit money you cannot afford to lose.
Fraud and rule-risk checks
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has warned about fantasy-stock websites promising real returns and described enforcement involving contracts tied to pre-IPO company liquidity events. Separately, European regulators have reminded firms that existing binary-option product-intervention obligations can apply as prediction markets expand. Use the official domain of a licensed provider, confirm the legal entity and be wary of guaranteed returns, referral pressure or unclear settlement language.
How to choose the right alternative
Choose shares or an ETF when these statements describe you
- You want exposure that can remain open after the next earnings date.
- You value ownership, potential dividends and participation in the company’s long-term cash generation.
- You prefer an unlevered position and can tolerate ordinary market volatility.
- You want diversification because your thesis concerns a sector or index rather than one company.
Choose listed options only when these statements describe you
- You can state the expected price move, time window and maximum loss in advance.
- You understand strike, expiry, premium, assignment, contract multiplier and liquidity.
- You have a specific reason to use a nonlinear payoff or hedge rather than simply own shares.
- Your broker has approved the strategy and you understand exercise and settlement procedures.
Consider copy trading or managed exposure when these statements describe you
- You want another person or team to select and execute positions.
- You accept manager, execution and strategy-change risk.
- You have verified authorization, custody arrangements, leverage limits and total fees.
- You can monitor drawdown and stop the service without relying on promised performance.
Step back when the proposition depends on a binary payout
If the attraction is mainly a quick, fixed payout and the product’s rules, licensing or counterparty are unclear, do not substitute a different name for the same risk. A binary structure can produce a total loss on one decision, while leverage can magnify that loss. Clarify whether your real objective is investing, hedging, learning about markets or short-term speculation; the appropriate instrument changes with the objective.
A practical pre-trade checklist
- Write the thesis: state what you expect the company to do, by when and why.
- Match the payoff: decide whether you need ownership, a capped-risk option, delegated execution or only a short event exposure.
- Measure the full exposure: include contract multipliers, leverage, margin, currency conversion and correlated positions.
- Calculate the worst case: for a share, option, managed account or event contract, identify the maximum plausible loss and whether it can exceed the initial cash.
- Check liquidity and exit rules: review spreads, trading hours, early closure, exercise, assignment and settlement procedures.
- Verify the provider: confirm the legal entity, regulatory authorization, client-asset arrangements and official contact domain.
- Account for costs and taxes: include commissions, spreads, fund expenses, financing, performance fees and local tax treatment.
- Set a review trigger: decide what evidence changes your view and when you will reassess rather than reacting to every price move.
What is the safest way to take a view?
There is no universally safe instrument. For a long-term, non-leveraged view, a diversified ETF generally avoids the single-event and single-company concentration of a binary contract, although it can still lose value. For direct conviction in one business, shares preserve the open-ended investment horizon but expose you to company-specific and valuation risk. Options can cap the buyer’s loss at the premium while adding expiry, volatility and liquidity risk. Copy trading replaces selection risk with manager, execution and leverage risk.
The sound choice is the one whose ownership status, payoff, time horizon, leverage, liquidity, fees, taxes and investor protections you can explain before committing money. If you cannot explain how and when the position settles—or who is legally responsible for holding your assets—do not treat it as a straightforward substitute for owning a diversified investment.
