For a simple station feed, first confirm that your setup combines the radio audio with a still image, visualizer, or video and encodes that audiovisual output for YouTube.
First separate radio playout from YouTube encoding
A radio station workflow can involve two different jobs. Radio automation schedules and plays music or other station audio, including when a DJ is absent. A YouTube encoder takes audio and video, combines or accepts them as an audiovisual program, and delivers a live stream to YouTube. One product may cover both jobs, but do not assume that an AutoDJ or Icecast/Shoutcast encoder can send a video-bearing YouTube stream by itself.

- Radio automation: plays the station’s scheduled audio.
- Visual composition: pairs that audio with a still image, visualizer, or video when needed.
- YouTube encoding and delivery: encodes the audiovisual output and sends it to YouTube Live.
YouTube’s encoder guide describes an encoder as converting video into a digital format for YouTube and notes that external audio and video hardware can be used. YouTube also cautions that its verified encoder products are not made by YouTube: YouTube’s verified encoder list.
Choose an alternative by operating model
| What you need | Approach to consider | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Local control and live production on a computer | Desktop encoder such as Wirecast | You operate and maintain the production computer; radio playout automation may remain a separate component. |
| Continuous or scheduled playback without an always-on local computer | Cloud production or playout service | Schedules, stream limits, accepted input formats, and pricing depend on the provider and need current verification. |
| Unattended station audio | Radio automation or AutoDJ, often cloud-hosted | It may handle station playout without encoding a video stream for YouTube. |
| A dedicated physical encoder | AJA HELO Plus | Specialized hardware may be unnecessary for a simple audio feed with a still image. |
| Distribution to multiple platforms | Multistream distribution service such as Restream | Distribution is not the same as creating the radio program or visual composition. |
Before choosing, check whether the tool accepts your actual audio source, produces a video-bearing stream, supports your desired unattended schedule, and sends to the destinations you need. Also consider what happens if a local computer or internet connection fails; that is a decision to make for your setup, not a reliability conclusion about any particular provider.

OBS alternatives that can send a YouTube stream
Wirecast: desktop software encoder
YouTube lists Wirecast for Windows and Mac and says it can stream directly to YouTube or an RTMP destination. YouTube’s listing also describes API support for managing, creating, and scheduling live streams from the app. This suits a station that wants local production software and accepts responsibility for the computer and connection running it. Confirm current operating-system support and product terms before choosing it.
Cloud services: Upstream and Restream
Upstream describes workflows for continuous streams, multistreaming, scheduled prerecorded streams, and a browser-based live studio. Its FAQ says users can upload videos, arrange or shuffle a playlist, and run it continuously from cloud servers. These are vendor-published feature descriptions, not independent performance tests. Upstream’s page also describes distribution of one feed to supported platforms; verify the current platform list and whether its workflow fits your radio audio and visual output.

When accessed on 2026-10-03, Upstream listed a free plan with one stream and 24 hours of streaming per month. That stated allowance does not support uninterrupted 24/7 use. Its plans and limits are subject to change, so confirm current terms on Upstream’s website before relying on them.

YouTube lists Restream as a cloud broadcasting studio for simultaneous distribution to multiple platforms. That makes it relevant if distribution is your main need; the listing does not establish that Restream replaces radio automation or every OBS production feature. Check whether you still need a separate playout and visual-composition tool.

AJA HELO Plus: standalone hardware
YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus as a compact, standalone H.264 encoder intended for direct YouTube Live streaming and simultaneous recording. It is a hardware route for stations that specifically want a dedicated appliance. For a basic radio broadcast accompanied by one still image, a separate encoder device may be more than the workflow requires. Confirm that your audio and video inputs match the device’s current specifications before buying.
Radio automation: useful, but not automatically a YouTube encoder
Radio automation handles scheduled music and continuity when a DJ is absent; live radio encoding captures a microphone and/or music and sends it to a streaming server. Those roles can be separate. A comparison published by Nobex Radio on 2026-08-26 uses this distinction while promoting its own service, so treat its product comparisons as vendor-authored descriptions rather than an independent ranking. When evaluating any radio tool, confirm that it can feed an encoder or service that creates and delivers the video-bearing YouTube stream you need.

How to connect an encoder to YouTube
- Enable YouTube live streaming in advance. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Complete this before the broadcast date and confirm that live streaming is available to your channel.
- Prepare the station’s audiovisual program. Route the station audio into the chosen encoder and add a still image, visualizer, or video if the audio source does not already include visuals. Confirm the source is audible and that the intended visual appears in the encoder preview.
- Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s current live-control-room flow to create or schedule the broadcast and obtain the stream connection details. Keep the stream key private; anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Connect the encoder. Choose YouTube’s native integration if the encoder provides one, or enter the server/ingestion address and stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Match the selected service or protocol to the values YouTube provides.
- Test before going live. Check audio level, the visual output, and the YouTube preview. Confirm the right stream and key are selected before starting the encoder, then verify the live broadcast from YouTube.
RTMPS settings when manual configuration is required
YouTube documents RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through an SSL connection. If your encoder or service asks you to configure RTMPS manually, use the valid YouTube RTMPS ingestion URL and application path, port 443, and the correct hostname for SNI authentication. The exact values depend on the endpoint YouTube provides; do not substitute a generic server address. A managed YouTube integration may handle these details without asking you to enter them. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.
Copyright and channel checks for radio broadcasts
Before streaming music or other recorded material, confirm you have the rights needed for the YouTube broadcast. Rights for an internet radio stream do not automatically establish permission to transmit the same recordings on YouTube. Also review YouTube’s current channel and live-stream policies, and make sure any visual material is cleared for use. A rights claim or policy restriction can affect a broadcast even when the technical encoder setup is working.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a first-ever YouTube live stream | Live streaming has not finished enabling for the channel. | Enable live streaming early; YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. |
| YouTube receives no signal | The encoder is stopped, the wrong stream key is selected, or the server address/protocol is incorrect. | Check the encoder’s destination and key against the current YouTube live stream settings; for manual RTMPS, verify the provided endpoint, application path, port 443, and SNI hostname. |
| Audio plays, but no picture appears | The radio source provides audio only, or the visual source is not connected to the encoder. | Add and preview a still image, visualizer, or video so the output is a video-bearing stream. |
| Music plays on the station but not on YouTube | The automation output is not routed to the encoder, or the encoder is listening to a different audio input. | Check the audio-routing path and confirm the signal is visible in the encoder’s input meters or preview. |
| The station stops when the computer is turned off | The chosen workflow depends on a local computer for playout, production, or encoding. | Determine which part of the chain must remain running; consider a cloud workflow if the stream must continue without a local machine. |
| A scheduled or continuous cloud stream exceeds its allowance | The selected plan’s monthly stream time or other limits do not match the schedule. | Compare the provider’s current limits with the planned hours before relying on a free or restricted plan. |
