Alternatives to Keeping Bitcoin on a Centralized Exchange: Wallets, Multisig, Custody and ETPs

The safest alternative to leaving bitcoin on a centralized exchange depends on what you need to do with it. A software wallet suits a small spending balance, a hardware wallet is generally the practical choice for long-term self-custody, multisignature storage distributes authorization for larger or shared holdings, regulated custody delegates key management, and a spot bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) provides price exposure without giving you spendable bitcoin. The trade-off is always between direct control, convenience, recovery responsibility, counterparty risk, liquidity and the ability to use bitcoin on-chain.

Why move bitcoin off a centralized exchange?

Bitcoin is controlled by private keys. A wallet application does not contain coins; it stores or accesses the keys that authorize transactions recorded on the Bitcoin network. When an exchange holds the keys, your account balance is a contractual claim on that company rather than direct control of the coins.

Bitcoin.org summarizes the risk this way: “When a third party controls your keys, you rely entirely on their security and honesty, and history has shown that exchanges and online wallets can be hacked, fail, or freeze access to funds.” An exchange can also impose withdrawal reviews, suspend an account, become insolvent, or face a legal order that affects access. Moving bitcoin to another arrangement can reduce some of those dependencies, but it does not remove responsibility or risk; it changes which risks you accept.

Before choosing an alternative, decide whether you need actual on-chain bitcoin that you can send and receive, or merely an investment that tracks its price. That single distinction separates wallets and multisig from custodial accounts and spot ETPs.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Compare the main alternatives

Option Who controls keys or assets What you can do Main strengths Main trade-offs
Software hot wallet You control the keys in an internet-connected signing environment. Send and receive bitcoin on-chain. Low cost, quick access and convenient everyday payments. Greater exposure to malware, phishing and compromised devices; you must create and protect backups.
Hardware or cold wallet You control keys kept offline on a dedicated device. Send and receive after approving transactions on the device. Stronger isolation from online attacks while remaining practical for personal storage. Device management, seed backup, firmware, inheritance and user-error responsibilities remain with you.
Multisignature self-custody A threshold of several independent keys authorizes a spend. Spend and recover as long as the required number of keys remains available. Reduces dependence on one key, device or location. More setup, coordination, documentation and recovery complexity.
Regulated third-party custodian The custodian controls or safeguards the keys under its service terms. Usually account-based transfers; capabilities depend on the custodian. Simpler operations and potentially useful institutional controls. Counterparty, insolvency, legal, withdrawal and fee risks remain.
Spot bitcoin ETP A fund and its custodian hold the underlying bitcoin; you own shares. Trade exposure through a brokerage account. No seed phrase or wallet operation; familiar brokerage and, where available, retirement-account rails. Product fees, market-hour and structure limits, issuer and custodian dependence, and no direct coin withdrawal.

Software hot wallets: convenient self-custody for spending

When a hot wallet makes sense

A software wallet is an application on a phone or computer that signs transactions while connected to the internet. It is usually the least expensive way to control your own keys and is well suited to a balance you expect to spend or move regularly. Keeping only a limited “working balance” reduces the amount exposed if the device or backup is compromised.

Hot wallets are not the same as exchange custody. You hold the recovery material and can broadcast transactions without asking a company to approve a withdrawal. That control comes with a hard requirement: if the seed phrase is lost, a device fails and no usable backup exists, the wallet may be unrecoverable. If the phrase is photographed, typed into a website or disclosed to a scammer, an attacker can take the funds without reversing the transaction.

Safer setup and daily use

  1. Install the wallet from the developer’s authentic distribution channel. Check the application name and publisher carefully; look-alike apps are a common phishing route.
  2. Create a new wallet in a private setting. Write the recovery words on paper or another offline medium exactly as displayed. Never save them in cloud storage, email, screenshots or a password manager unless you fully understand the resulting exposure.
  3. Set a strong device passcode and enable the device’s security updates. Keep the wallet application and operating system current, because updates can address exploitable defects.
  4. Make a small test deposit, then send a small test payment to confirm that addresses, fees and recovery procedures work as expected.
  5. Verify the recipient address on the device you trust, not only in a copied clipboard field. Malware can replace a copied address with one belonging to an attacker.
  6. Keep only the amount needed for near-term use in the hot wallet. Store larger reserves in a better-isolated arrangement.

Typical failure modes

  • Phishing: A fake support page or message asks for your seed phrase. No legitimate wallet support needs those words.
  • Malware: A compromised computer can alter addresses or observe sensitive data. A hot wallet cannot guarantee a clean signing environment.
  • Lost backup: A broken or replaced phone is harmless only if the recovery words are available and legible.
  • Irreversible mistakes: Bitcoin transactions generally cannot be canceled after confirmation. Start with small amounts while learning.

Hardware and cold wallets: practical long-term self-custody

What the device changes

A hardware wallet stores private keys in a dedicated device and is designed to keep them away from an internet-connected computer or phone. You prepare a transaction on the host device, review the destination and amount on the hardware wallet’s screen, and approve the signature there. Bitcoin.org describes an offline wallet used with backups and encryption as good practice and calls hardware wallets “the best balance between very high security and ease of use.”

Offline key storage narrows the attack surface; it does not make a wallet hack-proof. Phishing can still trick you into approving a fraudulent transaction, a malicious or counterfeit device can compromise setup, and a lost seed phrase can defeat the device’s security. Treat the hardware device, its firmware and its recovery words as a complete system.

Setup checklist

  1. Buy through a channel you can verify and inspect the package for tampering. Do not use a device that arrives with a pre-written recovery phrase.
  2. Initialize the device yourself and allow it to generate the recovery words. Confirm that the words are shown on the device, not supplied by someone else.
  3. Record the phrase offline, in the correct order, and verify it with the device’s recovery check. Keep the record secret and physically protected.
  4. Set the device PIN and, if supported and fully understood, an additional passphrase. A passphrase creates a separate wallet; losing it can make funds inaccessible.
  5. Install only the wallet software needed to communicate with the device. Verify transaction details on the hardware screen before approving.
  6. Perform a small receive-and-send test, then practice restoring the wallet on a separate device or test environment before transferring a substantial balance.
  7. Record firmware versions, device instructions and the recovery location in your continuity plan. Update firmware only through the manufacturer’s authenticated process and re-check addresses afterward.

Protecting the recovery phrase

The seed phrase is the ultimate authority. Anyone who sees it can usually recreate the wallet without the physical device, while a device that is destroyed can be replaced if the phrase remains intact. Keep the backup away from casual access, fire, water and predictable theft locations. A durable metal seed-phrase backup can help with physical damage, but it must remain secret; durability does not make a disclosed phrase safe.

Do not store the phrase in a bank of photographs, a cloud drive, a support ticket or a web form. Do not read it aloud to a person claiming to provide technical support. Separate knowledge of the location from knowledge of the contents when practical, while ensuring that your future self or chosen heir can reconstruct the procedure.

Multisignature self-custody: distributing authorization

How a threshold wallet works

Multisignature (multisig) requires a defined number of independent keys to authorize a transaction. For example, a two-of-three arrangement needs any two of three keys; the exact threshold is a design choice, not a universal standard. Keys can be stored on separate hardware devices and in separate locations, reducing dependence on one device, one backup or one person.

This model is useful when the balance is large enough to justify planning, when more than one person must approve spending, or when an estate or business needs continuity. It can reduce selected single-point failures, but it cannot remove every failure mode. If you lose too many keys, lose the wallet’s configuration data, or cannot identify which addresses belong to the wallet, recovery may still fail.

Designing a recoverable multisig plan

  1. Choose the threshold based on realistic availability. A higher threshold improves resistance to one lost key but makes holidays, disasters and succession harder to manage.
  2. Use independent devices, backups and locations. Do not keep every key, phrase and configuration file in the same drawer.
  3. Document the wallet policy, derivation details and recovery procedure without placing complete signing authority in one easily stolen document.
  4. Test both ordinary spending and recovery before depositing the full balance. A test should prove that the required keys can sign and that a restored wallet derives the same addresses.
  5. Define who can authorize a transaction and how suspicious requests are verified. For a business, write approval rules; for a family, write an inheritance procedure.
  6. Review the plan after a device replacement, a move, a change in participants or a firmware update.

Multisig adds operational work: every signer needs training, backups need inventory, and heirs need clear instructions. Its benefit appears when a single compromised or unavailable key would otherwise be catastrophic.

Regulated third-party custody: delegated key management

A regulated custodian can hold or safeguard bitcoin for you under an account agreement. This can be appropriate when an organization needs role-based approvals, reporting, segregation of duties or a service desk rather than personal seed-phrase management. It may also suit an individual who understands self-custody but deliberately values delegated operations.

Custody is not the same as eliminating risk. Review who legally owns the assets, whether the custodian can lend or rehypothecate them, how withdrawals are approved, what happens during an outage, and which fees apply. Examine insolvency treatment, insurance language and jurisdiction-specific terms rather than assuming that “regulated” means the assets are guaranteed or immediately available.

Questions to ask before depositing

  • Who controls the private keys, and are they held in segregated wallets?
  • Can you withdraw to any Bitcoin address, or are transfers limited by an internal account system?
  • What identity, transaction-size or timing checks can delay a withdrawal?
  • What happens if the custodian becomes insolvent, loses access to a key, or receives a legal order?
  • Which fees apply to custody, deposits, withdrawals and network transactions?
  • How are heirs or a business successor authorized to access the account?

Use a custodian because its processes solve a specific operational problem, not because it offers the same control as a personal wallet. You remain exposed to the company’s security, solvency and policies.

Spot bitcoin ETPs: price exposure without a wallet

A spot bitcoin ETP is a brokerage-traded security whose fund and custodian hold underlying bitcoin while you own shares. It can be useful when your objective is investment exposure through an existing brokerage or retirement account and you do not need to spend, receive or withdraw bitcoin on-chain.

An ETP is not a wallet and is not spendable bitcoin. You cannot normally send its shares to a Bitcoin address or request the fund’s coins for personal use. Your result depends on the product’s structure, fees, trading venue, market hours, issuer and custodian. Availability, account eligibility and tax treatment vary by jurisdiction and can change, so read the current prospectus and brokerage terms.

When an ETP is the better fit

  • You want exposure to bitcoin’s market price rather than payment capability.
  • You already use a brokerage account and do not want seed-phrase, device or inheritance procedures.
  • Your account type or institutional policy does not permit direct wallet operations.

What to check

  • The annual expense ratio and any trading or account fees.
  • How closely the shares are intended to track the spot price and how creation, redemption and liquidity work.
  • The fund’s custodian, custody arrangements and disclosures about loss or theft.
  • Trading hours, bid-ask spreads and the possibility that shares trade at a premium or discount.
  • Whether your account can hold the product and how local tax rules apply.

Choose an ETP only when the distinction between financial exposure and direct ownership is acceptable. It removes wallet operations, not all counterparty or market risk.

Priority Usually points toward Reason
Frequent payments and low balance Software hot wallet Fast access and low setup cost outweigh the larger online attack surface for a limited amount.
Long-term ownership and on-chain control Hardware or cold wallet Offline key isolation limits routine internet exposure while preserving direct spending ability.
Large balance, shared approval or estate planning Multisignature self-custody Several independent keys can reduce the impact of one loss or compromise.
Delegated operations and institutional controls Regulated custodian Account procedures and service processes may be more practical than personal key management.
Price exposure only Spot bitcoin ETP You use brokerage rails and avoid direct wallet handling, while accepting product and issuer dependence.

Many people use a combination: a modest hot-wallet balance for spending, a hardware wallet for savings, and a separate ETP allocation when brokerage exposure is the objective. Keep the roles distinct so you do not mistake an investment share or a custodial balance for spendable bitcoin.

Backups, inheritance and emergency recovery

Build a written recovery plan

A recovery plan should tell a trusted successor what exists, where the relevant device or backup is located, which software is required, and how to verify that a restoration produced the correct addresses. It should not expose the seed phrase to unnecessary people. Consider splitting knowledge between a secure location and a trusted person, provided the arrangement remains understandable and survivable.

Test before an emergency

Restore a small test wallet or a copy of the wallet on a spare device. Confirm that the recovery words, passphrase, multisig policy and address format produce the expected balance. A backup that has never been tested is an assumption, not a recovery system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for changes

Update the plan when you move, replace a device, add a signer, change a custodian or revise your heirs. Remove obsolete copies and record which devices are active. For multisig, preserve the wallet configuration needed to identify the correct keys and addresses; the seed phrases alone may not be enough to reconstruct the intended policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Moving everything at once: Send a small test transaction first and confirm the destination.
  • Confusing a PIN with a backup: A device PIN protects the device; it does not replace the recovery phrase.
  • Entering words into a website: Support agents, forms and “validation” pages that request the phrase are theft attempts.
  • Ignoring address verification: Read the destination on a trusted screen before signing.
  • Keeping one copy only: Fire, water, loss or an unreadable record can destroy a single backup.
  • Overengineering too soon: Multisig without documentation and testing can be less recoverable than a well-managed hardware wallet.
  • Assuming an ETP is withdrawable bitcoin: Shares provide financial exposure, not a private key or an on-chain UTXO you can spend.
  • Assuming regulation equals a guarantee: Read the custody, insolvency, withdrawal and fee terms for the specific service.

Bottom line

For most individuals who want direct ownership, a properly initialized hardware wallet with a tested, protected backup is the practical starting point. Use a software wallet for a deliberately limited spending balance, consider multisig when the value or shared-control requirement justifies its documentation burden, use regulated custody when delegated operations are more important than sole key control, and choose a spot bitcoin ETP only when brokerage-based price exposure is enough. The right alternative is the one whose recovery process, security duties and access limits you can understand and maintain over time.
