1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can build institutional-quality investment research without making a generative AI system your primary analyst. The most reliable approach combines primary filings for auditability, a structured data platform for normalized coverage, portfolio software for risk and attribution, and Python or R for calculations you can inspect and reproduce. Each component solves a different problem; no single alternative replaces all of them.
What to use instead of generative AI
Choose the tool according to the decision you need to make. A filing database is strongest when you must verify definitions and footnotes. A normalized market-data platform is faster for screening and comparable-company work. Portfolio systems are designed for exposures, attribution, stress testing and reporting. Code is the most flexible option for custom factors and repeatable tests.

| Need | Best-fit alternative | What it contributes | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verify what a company or fund actually disclosed | SEC EDGAR and other primary documents | Original 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, proxy and fund disclosures; definitions, accounting policies, risks and footnotes | Manual extraction and inconsistent terminology |
| Screen securities and compare normalized fundamentals | S&P Capital IQ Pro | Structured corporate, financial and market data for investment and strategic analysis | Coverage, entitlements, exports and pricing must be confirmed for your account |
| Evaluate funds and managed portfolios | Morningstar Direct | Managed-investment due diligence, performance reporting, portfolio analytics and presentation outputs | Depth depends on the subscribed universe, holdings data and report configuration |
| Measure portfolio risk, attribution and liquidity | Bloomberg PORT | Multi-asset risk and attribution models, exposures, reporting templates and scheduled delivery | Implementation, integrations, model transparency and licensing require institutional setup |
| Build custom factors, event studies or diagnostics | Python or R, optionally in Bloomberg BQuant | Explicit formulas, tests, scenario models and versioned code | You must maintain data pipelines, tests, documentation and permissions |
The strongest process uses these options together rather than asking one product to provide data, interpretation, risk measurement and governance at once.
Primary-source research with SEC filings
What filings are good for
SEC filings are the reference point for checking a company’s own definitions and disclosures. A 10-K provides annual financial statements, business descriptions and risk factors; a 10-Q updates quarterly results; an 8-K reports specified events; a proxy explains governance and executive matters. Fund disclosures add holdings, strategy and other information relevant to due diligence.

Use the filing when a vendor field seems surprising, when two providers define a metric differently, or when an investment thesis depends on a footnote. Read the accounting-policy note, segment information, debt terms, share-count reconciliation and liquidity discussion instead of relying only on a headline ratio.
A repeatable filing workflow
- Define the question. Write the exact item you need, such as recurring revenue, debt maturity, share dilution or a fund’s derivatives exposure.
- Locate the period and form. Record whether the document is a 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, proxy or fund filing, its filing date and the reporting period.
- Capture the company’s definition. Copy the relevant table heading, footnote and unit before entering a number in your model.
- Check subsequent events and restatements. A later filing can revise a prior figure or change the interpretation of a metric.
- Store an evidence trail. Keep the document identifier, page or section, extraction date and any transformation applied.
Where a filing-only process falls short
Companies do not use identical labels or fiscal calendars, and important figures can be buried in lengthy documents. A spreadsheet or local script must standardize units, currencies, dates and missing values. Screening thousands of issuers manually is also slow. Add a structured provider when normalization and coverage exceed what your own process can maintain, but retain the filing as the verification layer.
Morningstar Direct for fund and managed-investment due diligence
Morningstar describes Direct as a standalone solution for managed-investment due diligence, product marketing, distribution, performance reporting and presentation generation. Its broader capability description combines Morningstar data and research with analytics, data science and productivity tools.
Use it when your question is fund-centric
- Compare funds or model portfolios across a defined investment universe.
- Review performance, risk measures, holdings and portfolio characteristics in a consistent format.
- Prepare reports or presentations for an investment committee, adviser or client.
- Screen products using the fields and classifications available in your subscription.
Questions to ask before adopting it
- Does the licensed universe include the fund domiciles, share classes and strategies you cover?
- How current are holdings, performance and risk fields for your use case?
- Can you export the data and preserve the methodology behind a report?
- Are attribution, look-through holdings and custom screens deep enough for your mandate?
- Can permissions and report history support compliance review?
Direct is a natural fit for selectors, wealth managers, consultants and asset-management teams. It is less suited to a team that primarily needs bespoke security-level factors or a fully custom event-study engine; those tasks usually belong in code or a quantitative platform.
S&P Capital IQ Pro for normalized company and market data
S&P Global positions Capital IQ Pro as an aggregation of corporate, financial and market data for investment and strategic analysis. Buy-side materials describe standardized data for quantitative models and machine-learning pipelines, along with credit and textual-data products.
Typical uses
- Public-company screening and financial-statement comparison.
- Comparable-company analysis with normalized fields.
- Ownership, estimates, credit and market-data research where those entitlements are included.
- Input data for quantitative models or machine-learning pipelines that require consistent schemas.
Validation requirements
Normalization is useful but not infallible. Compare unusual values with the issuer’s filing, especially after an acquisition, accounting-policy change, restatement or fiscal-calendar change. Ask how the provider handles point-in-time availability, private-company coverage, estimate revisions, source lineage, API limits and export retention. A clean field without its definition is not an auditable investment conclusion.

Bloomberg PORT for portfolio risk and attribution
Bloomberg PORT is designed for multi-asset portfolio analysis rather than only security discovery. Bloomberg says PORT Enterprise scales portfolio and risk analytics across teams, with risk and attribution models, multi-asset insights, reporting templates and scheduled delivery. Its buy-side workflow connects research management with holdings, exposures, liquidity, orders and compliance.

What PORT adds after you have positions
- Exposure views across asset classes and risk dimensions.
- Performance attribution to explain where returns came from.
- Scenario and stress analysis for portfolio decisions.
- Liquidity and reporting workflows that can be distributed on a schedule.
Fit and trade-offs
PORT is most appropriate for professional or institutional teams that need shared measurement, attribution, risk oversight and reporting. The buying decision should focus on data entitlements, model transparency, integrations, implementation effort, user permissions and licensing—not merely on the number of dashboards.
Bloomberg BQuant and a code-first workflow
Bloomberg identifies BQuant as a Python-based environment for building, testing and deploying custom analytics with Bloomberg and external data. The key difference from generated prose is that the analyst defines the calculation, preserves the code and can rerun the same test when data or assumptions change.
Good candidates for BQuant or local Python/R
- Custom factor definitions that are not available as a standard vendor field.
- Event studies around earnings, guidance, corporate actions or macro releases.
- Portfolio diagnostics, concentration checks and scenario models.
- Backtests with explicit rebalance dates, transaction assumptions and missing-data rules.
- Automated reports whose calculations must be reviewed or rerun by another analyst.
Python is open source and is widely preferred for alternative and unstructured data analysis, according to an IMF technical note. R remains useful for statistical work and reporting. Either language can use public or licensed datasets outside a terminal; the quality depends on point-in-time controls, tests and documentation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Minimum controls for reproducible analysis
- Pin the data version or record the retrieval timestamp.
- Use point-in-time observations so later revisions cannot leak into an earlier backtest.
- Separate raw inputs, transformed data and final signals.
- Write tests for units, dates, missing values and corporate actions.
- Log every assumption, including fees, turnover, borrow costs and rebalance timing.
- Have another person review the code and reproduce a sample result.
Established quantitative methods that do not require generative AI
Factor models, natural-language processing applied to earnings filings, alternative-data processing and machine-learning signal generation have been part of the quantitative toolkit for more than two decades. They do not require a generative model to invent a narrative. An analyst can specify the features, transformations, training window, validation split and acceptance criteria directly.

Factor models
Define factors such as value, quality, momentum, size or low volatility with written formulas and a stated rebalance schedule. Test exposures, turnover, capacity and drawdowns, then examine whether the factor is actually driving returns rather than a hidden sector or market beta.
Text and alternative data
Natural-language processing can classify filing language or measure changes in tone using a documented vocabulary or statistical model. Alternative data can add behavioral or operational signals, but licensing, representativeness, revisions and privacy constraints must be recorded before it enters a portfolio process.
Statistical and scenario analysis
Regression, time-series models, Monte Carlo simulations and historical stress periods are transparent when their inputs and assumptions are saved. They are not automatically reliable: unstable relationships, short samples and regime changes require sensitivity analysis and out-of-sample checks.
How to assemble an end-to-end process
Step 1: Define the decision
State whether the output is security selection, fund due diligence, asset allocation, risk monitoring, performance attribution or a report. A fund-selector workflow needs different data and controls from a derivatives-risk workflow.
Step 2: Establish a primary-document and point-in-time policy
Record filing dates, reporting periods, restatements and issuer definitions. Decide which date makes an observation eligible for a historical test and how you will handle revised vendor fields.
Step 3: Add structured data only where it saves material effort
Use a normalized platform when universe coverage, screening or cross-company comparability exceeds your spreadsheet or local codebase. Keep source-document links or identifiers beside imported values so an analyst can investigate an exception.

Step 5: Compare independent outputs
Reconcile a sample of vendor figures to filings and compare portfolio results with an independent calculation. Document disagreements instead of silently selecting the more convenient number.
Step 6: Add governance before automation
Review permissions, audit trails, data-retention rules and handoffs into orders or reporting. Define who can change a model, approve a release and investigate a failed data check.

Cost, access and implementation questions
Current comparable prices were not stated in the cited materials. Treat licensing, user seats, data entitlements, API or export rights, implementation services and ongoing support as separate cost lines. A free filing source can still require substantial analyst time and engineering effort; a commercial platform can reduce manual work but add permission and integration constraints.
Before signing, request a written specification for markets, exchanges, fund domiciles, history length, update frequency, point-in-time availability, redistribution rights, retention, sandbox access and cancellation terms. Using one vendor score as the investment thesis
A score compresses assumptions and may hide missing data. Inspect the underlying fields, compare the result with primary documents and state what would falsify the thesis.
Best Value
Mixing dates in a backtest
Combining today’s classifications or revised fundamentals with historical prices can create look-ahead bias. Enforce an eligibility date and retain historical versions.
Ignoring definitions and units
Revenue, operating income, assets under management and free cash flow can be defined differently. Store the unit, currency, fiscal period and transformation with every imported value.
Automating without an audit trail
A scheduled report is not governed merely because it runs reliably. Log input versions, code commits, model parameters, approvals and exceptions so a reviewer can reconstruct the output.
Creating correlated strategies
The IMF warns that shared datasets and methodologies can increase correlated investment strategies and herding behavior. Diversify not only holdings but also signal sources, model assumptions and validation methods; monitor cross-strategy exposures before treating several apparently independent signals as independent.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the primary decision clearly defined?
- Can every material number be traced to a document or licensed dataset?
- Are filing dates, restatements and point-in-time eligibility recorded?
- Are calculations explicit, tested and reproducible in Python, R or a controlled workbook?
- Does the chosen platform provide the required universe, holdings, estimates and update frequency?
- Can the portfolio workflow explain performance, exposures, liquidity and stress outcomes?
- Are permissions, data-retention, audit and handoff requirements documented?
- Have independent sources been used to challenge—not merely confirm—the result?
Bottom line: build a stack, not a substitute chatbot
The best alternative to generative AI for investment research is a layered process. Start with SEC filings for what the issuer actually reported, add Morningstar Direct for managed-investment due diligence or S&P Capital IQ Pro for normalized company data, use Bloomberg PORT for portfolio risk and attribution, and put custom analysis in Python or R (including BQuant when its data environment fits). This division of labor gives you breadth, auditability, portfolio context and reproducibility while preserving independent judgment.
