Investors comparing China Construction Bank (CCB) with other listed Chinese banks can start with Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), Bank of China (BOC) and China Merchants Bank (CMB). They are comparison candidates, not interchangeable securities or recommendations: their business mix, risks, share classes and valuations need to be checked against current issuer reports.
Which listed banks are worth comparing with CCB?
A useful initial comparison set is ICBC, ABC, BOC and CMB. EY’s Listed banks in China 2024: Review and outlook, published in 2025, covers listed mainland banks and identifies ICBC and CMB among the institutions it considers. Bank of China also maintains an investor-relations site with financial reports. These sources support treating the names as research candidates; they do not establish which is the best alternative for a particular investor.

| Bank | Why include it in an initial comparison | What the available information establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) | A listed-bank peer to investigate | Identified among the institutions considered in EY’s 2024 review, published in 2025. The review’s underlying data generally comes from bank annual reports. |
| Agricultural Bank of China (ABC) | A large listed-bank peer to investigate | Named as a plausible comparison candidate; no dated, comparable performance or valuation data is established here. |
| Bank of China (BOC) | A listed-bank peer with investor reporting available | Its investor-relations materials list 2026 interim and 2025 annual reports, with separate A-share and H-share versions. |
| China Merchants Bank (CMB) | A national joint-stock bank to compare with CCB | Identified in EY’s review. Its different bank type means it should not be assumed to have the same business mix or risk exposures as CCB. |
The table is a starting shortlist, not a ranking. The available material does not provide a same-date peer dataset that would support ranking these banks by risk, performance, valuation or dividend yield.
Why bank type and business mix matter
Comparing banks solely because they offer China banking exposure can conceal meaningful differences. A large state-owned bank and a national joint-stock bank need not have identical business mixes or risk exposures. For each candidate, examine the actual loan portfolio, concentrations, funding and revenue mix in its own filings rather than assuming that a peer’s results describe CCB.
#1 Best Overall
EY’s review discusses performance, operating models and the regulatory environment of listed mainland banks, and says its data generally comes from banks’ annual reports. That makes it useful sector context, but an investor should use the issuers’ own reports for current, bank-specific figures.
How to make a fair comparison
Use the latest available annual and interim reports, and compare banks using the same reporting period wherever possible. A headline ratio without its date, definition and source can make unlike results appear comparable.
Rank #2
- Asset quality: Review non-performing loans, loan concentrations and provisions. Check how each issuer defines and reports the measures.
- Capital, funding and liquidity: Compare capital ratios and funding and liquidity disclosures for the same period; do not treat one ratio as a complete measure of resilience.
- Profitability and revenue mix: Examine net interest margin and profitability alongside the sources of revenue. A similar profit figure can reflect different business models.
- Dividends: Distinguish a dividend declared by the bank from a trailing yield calculated from a share price. A yield is date-dependent and does not establish what a future dividend will be.
- Valuation: Choose a consistent valuation measure and date for all the securities. No current, comparable valuation is established by the information available here.
BOC’s investor-relations listing includes 2026 interim reports and 2025 annual reports in separate A-share and H-share versions. CCB’s investor page lists its 2026 half-year report dated 28 August 2026 and an H-share version dated 28 September 2026. Check the relevant issuer’s investor-relations site for the latest filings before using figures; reporting versions and dates can differ.

Check the share class and market, not just the bank name
CCB’s investor-relations materials identify its Hong Kong H-shares as code 00939 and its Shanghai A-shares as code 601939. These are distinct listed securities. When describing or comparing exposure, name the market and share class rather than referring only to “CCB stock.” BOC’s reporting materials likewise distinguish A-share and H-share versions.

Could a fund be an alternative?
A diversified fund could be another way to seek exposure in principle, but no specific China banking ETF is substantiated here. Before considering a fund, verify it through the issuer’s current factsheet: holdings, weighting method, fees, domicile, share class, currency and investor availability all matter. Without those details, a fund cannot be responsibly compared with the named bank shares.

- Decide whether you want exposure to one bank or a basket of banks, and define the market and share class you can access.
- Download the latest interim and annual reports from each candidate’s official investor-relations site.
- Record the reporting period and definitions for asset quality, capital, profitability, revenue mix and dividends.
- Compare valuation measures using the same date, and separate declared dividends from price-based trailing yields.
- If considering a fund, confirm its current holdings and terms in the fund issuer’s factsheet rather than relying on its name.
