Alternatives to a Tech-Heavy Portfolio: Equal-Weight, Value, and International ETFs

If a few giant technology companies dominate your stock holdings, you can reduce that concentration without abandoning equities. The three approaches in this guide solve different problems: an equal-weight S&P 500 fund spreads exposure more evenly across U.S. large-cap companies; a value fund shifts toward businesses priced more modestly and away from growth-heavy sectors; and an international fund adds developed and emerging markets outside the United States.

These are exposure adjustments, not guaranteed hedges. Each ETF owns stocks, can lose value, and can underperform the portfolio you are trying to diversify. The right choice depends on whether your priority is reducing mega-cap concentration, adding a value factor, or changing your geographic mix.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Choose equal weight when the problem is oversized U.S. mega-cap positions.
  • Choose value when you want a deliberate large-cap value tilt and can tolerate style cycles.
  • Choose international when most of your portfolio is U.S.-only and you want non-U.S. developed and emerging-market exposure.

What each ETF alternative is designed to change

A technology-heavy portfolio can be concentrated in two ways at once. A small number of very large companies may account for a substantial share of a market-cap-weighted U.S. index, and the portfolio may also be almost entirely domestic. Equal-weight, value and international ETFs address those dimensions separately.

ETF approach Main job How the portfolio is built Distinct risk
Equal-weight U.S. large caps (RSP) Reduce mega-cap concentration within the U.S. large-cap universe Uses the same S&P 500 constituents, assigning each company 0.2% at every quarterly rebalance Can lag when the largest companies lead; remains U.S.-only and incurs rebalancing turnover
Large-cap value (VTV) Add a value factor and a different sector mix Tracks the Morningstar US Large Cap Value Index; the cited fact sheet lists 298 stocks Value can lag growth, while financials, industrials and health care create sector and style-cycle risk
International (VXUS) Add developed and emerging stocks outside the United States Tracks the FTSE Global All Cap ex US Index Currency, country, political and regional-market risk accompany the geographic diversification

Because the funds solve different problems, they are not interchangeable. Equal weight changes how U.S. companies are sized. Value changes the characteristics and sector exposures of the companies selected. International changes where the companies are located. A portfolio can use one, two or all three, but adding an ETF without identifying the concentration it is meant to fix can simply create more overlap.

Equal-weight exposure: what RSP changes—and what it does not

How the weighting rule works

The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index contains the same constituents as the capitalization-weighted S&P 500. At each quarterly rebalance, every company receives a fixed 0.2% weight. Between rebalances, market movements cause weights to drift until the next scheduled reset.

This rule transfers some exposure away from the biggest companies toward the smaller members of the same index. It does not replace the S&P 500 with a different collection of businesses, and it does not select companies because they are cheap, profitable or located outside the United States.

Why equal weight can reduce concentration

In a capitalization-weighted index, a company becomes a larger holding as its market value rises. A handful of mega-cap winners can therefore dominate returns and portfolio risk. Equal weighting places a ceiling on each constituent at the rebalance point, so the portfolio is less dependent on the performance of the largest names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The effect is mechanical rather than predictive. If mega-cap technology stocks continue to outperform, a market-cap-weighted index may outperform RSP because it owns more of those winners. RSP’s quarterly rebalance then trims companies that have grown above their target weight and adds to those that have fallen below it. That creates turnover and a built-in tendency to sell relative winners and buy relative laggards.

Equal weight is not equal sector exposure

RSP does not assign every sector the same percentage. Sectors contain different numbers of S&P 500 companies, so a sector with more constituents naturally receives a larger aggregate weight when each company is set to 0.2%. Company prices also move between quarterly rebalances, changing sector totals before the next reset.

Use RSP when your objective is specifically to reduce concentration in the largest U.S. companies. Do not describe it as a sector-neutral or globally diversified fund: it remains tied to the S&P 500 universe and therefore to the U.S. economy and U.S. market cycle.

Questions to check before buying

  • How much of your existing portfolio already overlaps the S&P 500 constituents?
  • Are you prepared for periods when mega-cap growth leads and an equal-weight fund trails?
  • Can your account and tax plan accommodate the turnover associated with quarterly rebalancing?
  • Have you compared the fund’s expense ratio, bid-ask spread and tracking difference with other equal-weight S&P 500 options?

Value exposure: what VTV adds

Index and portfolio profile

VTV tracks the Morningstar US Large Cap Value Index. Vanguard’s fact sheet dated September 30, 2026 lists 298 stocks and a 0.03% expense ratio. The same fact sheet reports sector weights of 21.2% financials, 15.8% industrials, 15.6% health care and 10.6% technology.

VTV figure Reported value and date How to interpret it
Number of stocks 298 (September 30, 2026 fact sheet) A broad large-cap collection, not a handful of individual holdings
Expense ratio 0.03% (September 30, 2026 fact sheet) An annual fund expense expressed as a percentage of assets; verify the current figure before trading
Financials 21.2% (September 30, 2026 fact sheet) The largest of the sector weights cited for this date
Industrials 15.8% (September 30, 2026 fact sheet) Provides a different mix from a technology-dominated portfolio
Health care 15.6% (September 30, 2026 fact sheet) Adds another substantial non-technology allocation
Technology 10.6% (September 30, 2026 fact sheet) Lower than the technology share commonly found in growth-heavy U.S. indexes, but not zero

Value is a factor bet, not a neutral diversification tool

A value allocation deliberately favors large companies that meet the index’s value criteria. Its returns can diverge from the broad market for long periods. When investors favor rapidly growing companies, value stocks may lag. When economically sensitive or financially oriented companies recover, value can lead. Neither outcome is guaranteed on a particular schedule.

The sector mix matters as much as the label. With 21.2% in financials, 15.8% in industrials and 15.6% in health care on the cited date, VTV introduces meaningful exposure to interest-rate conditions, credit losses, business investment and health-care policy. Those exposures may reduce technology concentration, but they replace part of it with other sources of risk.

When a value ETF fits

VTV is most directly aligned with an investor who wants to keep a U.S. large-cap allocation while tilting its characteristics toward value. It is less suitable as a solution to a geographic shortfall because it does not add foreign stocks. It is also not a cash substitute or a defensive guarantee; a value ETF remains an equity investment whose price can fall during market-wide or sector-specific declines.

Before using VTV as a satellite position, compare its holdings with your existing broad-market and dividend funds. Overlap can be substantial even when fund names differ. Review the current fact sheet rather than relying on the September 30, 2026 snapshot, because sector weights, holdings and index classifications change.

International exposure: what VXUS contributes

Geographic construction

VXUS tracks the FTSE Global All Cap ex US Index. “Ex US” means the fund adds developed and emerging-market stocks outside the United States, giving it a geographic role that neither RSP nor VTV can provide.

Vanguard’s product result reported technology at 17.00% as of July 31, 2026. That figure is a dated snapshot, not a permanent ceiling: country weights, sector weights and company sizes move as markets change and the index is reconstituted.

Why international stocks can diversify a U.S.-only portfolio

Companies outside the United States operate under different economic conditions, currencies, interest-rate policies and market valuations. Their returns will not always move in step with U.S. stocks. Adding them can reduce reliance on a single country’s market, currency and policy environment.

Diversification does not remove risk. Currency movements can raise or reduce the dollar value of overseas holdings. Political decisions, capital controls, accounting differences, market closures and regional recessions can affect prices and trading conditions. Emerging markets may have higher volatility and different investor protections than developed markets. These risks are part of the reason international exposure can behave differently from U.S. exposure.

When VXUS is the relevant lever

VXUS is the clearest fit when your portfolio is overwhelmingly invested in U.S. companies and you want a single broad vehicle for non-U.S. developed and emerging markets. It does not specifically target value stocks or equalize the weights of U.S. mega-caps. If your concern is only that a few technology companies are too large, adding VXUS changes geography but does not directly resize those U.S. holdings.

Comparing the three approaches on the decisions that matter

Decision RSP VTV VXUS
Primary concentration addressed U.S. mega-cap size concentration Growth-versus-value and sector concentration U.S.-country concentration
Geographic scope United States United States Developed and emerging markets outside the United States
Index or selection rule Same S&P 500 constituents; 0.2% per company at quarterly rebalance Morningstar US Large Cap Value Index FTSE Global All Cap ex US Index
Current cited data 0.2% per constituent at rebalance 298 stocks; 0.03% expense ratio; 10.6% technology; 21.2% financials; 15.8% industrials; 15.6% health care (September 30, 2026) 17.00% technology (July 31, 2026)
Main trade-off May underperform when the largest U.S. companies lead; quarterly turnover Value and sector cycles can produce long stretches of underperformance Currency, country, political and regional-market variation

The table shows why there is no universal “best” alternative. RSP and VTV can both reduce the relative weight of technology compared with a growth-heavy portfolio, but they leave the country exposure essentially U.S.-based. VXUS addresses the country problem, yet its technology allocation was still 17.00% on July 31, 2026, so international exposure should not be described as a technology-free portfolio.

A practical framework for choosing one or combining several

Step 1: Name the concentration you want to fix

  1. Oversized U.S. companies: investigate an equal-weight approach such as RSP.
  2. Growth-heavy characteristics or sectors: investigate a large-cap value allocation such as VTV.
  3. Too much United States: investigate a broad ex-U.S. fund such as VXUS.

If more than one description fits, rank the problems. Changing three exposures at once can make it difficult to tell which allocation is helping or hurting, and it can produce unintended duplication.

Step 2: Measure your starting portfolio

List each fund’s country, sector, market-cap and style exposures. An overlap tool or spreadsheet can identify whether a proposed ETF owns many of the same companies already in your portfolio. Look through the fund level: replacing one broad U.S. fund with RSP and VTV may still leave most assets in the same S&P 500 companies, while adding VXUS can introduce companies that were previously absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Compare implementation costs

Check the current expense ratio, bid-ask spread, tracking difference and rebalance schedule. The 0.03% expense ratio cited for VTV belongs to the September 30, 2026 fact sheet; do not assume that figure applies to RSP or VXUS or remains unchanged. A low stated expense ratio does not guarantee the lowest total cost if spreads are wider or the fund tracks its index less closely.

Step 4: Decide how you will maintain the allocation

Set a review rule before purchasing. You might direct new contributions to the underweight holding or rebalance at a predetermined interval rather than reacting to headlines. For RSP, remember that the index itself rebalances quarterly; your own portfolio still needs a separate plan for drift among the ETFs you hold.

Step 5: Check account and tax implications

ETF shares trade through a brokerage account during market hours and can trade above or below their net asset value. Use limit orders when the spread or market conditions make execution price important, and confirm the quoted price, spread and trading volume at the time of the order. Review the tax treatment that applies to your account and jurisdiction with a qualified professional; the funds’ labels do not determine your personal tax result.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Calling equal weight a sector hedge

Equal weighting companies does not equalize sectors. RSP still reflects the number and performance of companies in each S&P 500 sector. If your objective is to reduce a particular sector, inspect sector data directly instead of inferring it from the word “equal.”

Assuming value always beats growth after a purchase

VTV’s value tilt can lag for extended periods. The 10.6% technology weight and larger financial, industrial and health-care allocations describe one dated portfolio snapshot, not a promise of future returns. Buy the exposure only if you can hold through a value cycle that looks unfavorable.

Treating international diversification as a guaranteed cushion

VXUS can decline along with U.S. stocks, and currency or regional shocks can increase losses in dollar terms. Its purpose is to diversify the source of returns, not to guarantee a smaller drawdown.

Comparing only headline expense ratios

Fund costs also include the price paid when buying or selling, the difference between the ETF’s market price and net asset value, tracking quality and turnover. Compare these features under the same market conditions and use dated fund documents.

Ignoring overlap

Adding several ETFs can leave you with many of the same holdings in different wrappers. Review the underlying constituents and sector allocations before concluding that a second fund has created new diversification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to implement an ETF change carefully

  1. Write the objective in one sentence: for example, “reduce U.S. mega-cap concentration,” “add a value tilt,” or “add non-U.S. stocks.”
  2. Record the current allocation: include each fund’s U.S. share, international share, sector mix and largest holdings.
  3. Read the latest official fact sheet and index description: verify holdings, expense ratio, rebalance rules and the date of every figure.
  4. Compare trading conditions: check the live bid, ask, spread and market price relative to net asset value in your brokerage account.
  5. Choose a contribution or rebalance method: direct new money, make a one-time change, or combine both according to your account and tax circumstances.
  6. Document the reason and review date: judge the ETF against the objective you set, not against whichever style happened to lead most recently.

Which alternative is most appropriate for common situations?

“A few U.S. technology giants dominate my stock allocation.”

Start with the equal-weight question. RSP keeps the S&P 500 companies but assigns 0.2% to each at the quarterly rebalance, directly reducing the influence of the largest constituents. If you also want less growth exposure, a value allocation may address a second issue, but it introduces a factor bet rather than simply spreading S&P 500 weights.

“I want a cheaper-looking, more economically oriented U.S. mix.”

Examine VTV’s value characteristics and sector exposures. The September 30, 2026 fact sheet’s 21.2% financials, 15.8% industrials, 15.6% health care and 10.6% technology illustrate the kind of shift involved. Decide whether you can accept the possibility that value trails growth for years.

“Nearly all of my investments are in U.S. funds.”

VXUS addresses the geographic gap by tracking an ex-U.S. global index covering developed and emerging markets. Its 17.00% technology weight as of July 31, 2026 shows that international diversification changes the country mix without eliminating technology exposure. Assess how much currency and regional risk you are willing to accept.

Bottom line for a tech-heavy portfolio

Use the tool that matches the problem. RSP is for reducing mega-cap concentration inside the S&P 500; VTV is for adding a large-cap value factor and a different U.S. sector mix; VXUS is for adding developed and emerging markets outside the United States. Compare costs, spreads, tracking, rebalance rules and overlap, and treat all three as equity exposures that can lose money rather than as guaranteed protection.
