AllHere Education developed Ed, an AI chatbot intended to help Los Angeles Unified School District students and families find academic guidance and district information. The project ended after the company reported financial distress and furloughed most of its staff. Separately, federal prosecutors charged AllHere founder Joanna Smith-Griffin with securities fraud, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, alleging investor deception and misuse of some investor funds. Those charges are allegations, not a conviction; the Justice Department described a home down payment and wedding expenses, not a mansion.
What was Ed, the chatbot AllHere built for LAUSD?
Ed was a student-and-family support project developed by AllHere Education for Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The chatbot was promoted as an AI-enhanced student adviser that could provide academic guidance and help families navigate district information. The Los Angeles Times reported on the project and its eventual end.

Ed’s promised role was to make district guidance easier to access; it was not a general-purpose consumer chatbot. The available reporting establishes the intended function, but does not establish that the project achieved its goals or provide a basis for measuring its effectiveness.
Why did the project end?
LAUSD’s project ended after AllHere furloughed most of its staff and reported financial distress, according to the Los Angeles Times. That explains the reported end of the vendor project; it is distinct from the later federal criminal charges against Smith-Griffin.

How much did LAUSD pay AllHere?
The Los Angeles Times reported that the original contract was valued at up to $6 million over five years and that the district had spent about $3 million before the project ended. The first figure is a contract ceiling, not proof that LAUSD paid the full amount; the second is the reported approximate spend. These district contract figures should not be conflated with investor funds mentioned in the federal allegations.
What are the federal allegations against Joanna Smith-Griffin?
On November 19, 2024, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced charges against Smith-Griffin: securities fraud, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Prosecutors alleged that she deceived investors and used some investor money for personal expenses, including a down payment on a home in North Carolina and wedding expenses. The Justice Department announcement sets out the charges and allegations.

Prosecutors also alleged that investor-facing claims about AllHere’s finances and customers were false or misleading. According to the Justice Department, in spring 2021 Smith-Griffin told prospective investors the company had about $3.7 million in 2020 revenue, about $2.5 million in cash, and major school-district customers including New York City and Atlanta Public Schools. The announcement attributes those figures to statements made to investors; they are not established here as verified company results.

A criminal charge is not proof of guilt, and the allegations must be distinguished from an adjudicated outcome.

Was the money spent on a mansion?
The Justice Department announcement reviewed for this account says prosecutors alleged a down payment on Smith-Griffin’s North Carolina home and wedding expenses. It does not describe the home as a mansion. The available source therefore does not substantiate the headline’s “mansion” wording, and it would be inaccurate to present that characterization as an established fact.
