All-Terrain Tire Treadwear: What the Ratings and Tests Really Show

There is not enough comparable evidence to name 12 all-terrain tires with the best treadwear ratings. A UTQG treadwear grade is a comparative manufacturer-assigned measure, not a mileage estimate, and warranty mileage is a separate coverage promise—not a tire-wear test. To choose a long-lasting all-terrain tire, compare the exact size and market’s grade and warranty, then weigh those figures against independent safety results for the conditions where you drive.

Why a treadwear rating cannot tell you how many miles a tire will last

In the United States, the Uniform Tire Quality Grading (UTQG) system assigns tires grades for treadwear, traction, and temperature. Consumer Reports describes treadwear grading as manufacturer-graded and imprecise; it is useful as a relative comparison, not a precise prediction of service life. Consumer Reports explains the UTQG system.

Toyo Tires’ March 2025 OE Warranty Booklet says UTQG treadwear is based on wear rate on a specified government test track and cautions against translating that grade into expected mileage: “It is wrong to link treadwear grades with your projected tire mileage.” Read Toyo’s warranty booklet.

Actual wear depends on factors beyond the grade, including vehicle, inflation, alignment, rotation, load, driving style, road surface, and climate. A higher UTQG number alone therefore does not establish that one all-terrain model will last longer than another in your use.

UTQG grade, mileage warranty, and measured tread life are different

  • UTQG treadwear grade: a comparative grade, not a guaranteed distance or a direct forecast for your vehicle.
  • Mileage warranty: the manufacturer’s stated coverage under specified terms and exclusions. It is not proof that the tire will reach that mileage, nor a measurement of wear in a controlled comparison.
  • Measured tread life: an observed result from a defined test or owner-use sample. It applies to the tested tire, size, vehicle, and conditions—not automatically to every version of a model.

Tyre Reviews’ 2026 all-terrain comparison explicitly uses warranty-based figures in its life comparison; that is not a wear test. Its included models are Falken Wildpeak AT4W, Nitto Recon Grappler AT, Pirelli Scorpion XTM AT, BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO3, and Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac RT. The comparison is useful context, but it does not establish a measured treadwear ranking or a verified top 12. See the 2026 Tyre Reviews comparison.

What independent all-terrain testing can—and cannot—tell you

Longevity is only one part of choosing an all-terrain tire. Wet braking, snow grip, dry-road handling, gravel performance, off-road capability, noise, and fuel economy can differ. A long warranty does not tell you how safely a tire will stop in rain or snow.

In ADAC’s 2025 test of eight tires in size 225/65 R17, as reported by Tyre Reviews, the Falken Wildpeak A/T AT3WA had the shortest wet-braking distance among the tested all-terrain tires: 39.7 m from 80 km/h. The BFGoodrich Trail Terrain T/A had the shortest snow-braking distance: 10.9 m from 30 km/h. These are braking results, not treadwear measurements. Read the reported ADAC test results.

The tested group consisted of Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015, Falken Wildpeak A/T AT3WA, General Grabber AT3, Matador MP72 Izzarda A/T2, Pirelli Scorpion A/T+, Toyo Open Country A/T III, Bridgestone Dueler A/T002, and BFGoodrich Trail Terrain T/A. The report says the all-terrain tires had weaker on-road safety than the all-season reference and that no tested all-terrain tire earned an ADAC recommendation. That finding is limited to this group, size, and test conditions; it is not a verdict on every all-terrain tire or size.

Do not transfer these European 225/65 R17 results automatically to a similarly named tire sold in another market or to a different size. Model generations, specifications, and availability can vary. Consumer Reports lists tested tread life, warranty, and UTQG as distinct comparison fields for all-terrain truck tires; its full ratings may require access. View Consumer Reports tire ratings.

How to compare tires for your vehicle

  1. Start with the exact fitment. Use the tire size, load index, and speed rating specified for your vehicle or approved by its manufacturer. Compare tires in the same size and intended load category; a model name alone is not a complete specification.
  2. Check the current UTQG grade for that version. Look at the tire’s sidewall and the manufacturer’s current product information for the exact size and market. Do not assume a grade listed for another size, generation, or regional variant applies.
  3. Read the warranty terms, not just the mileage headline. Confirm the covered tire and size, required maintenance and rotation, prorating or replacement terms, and exclusions. Treat the number as a coverage condition, not a promise of measured tread life.
  4. Match test evidence to your driving. Prioritize wet and snow braking if those conditions matter most. Check whether a snow certification is appropriate for your needs, and consider how much time you spend on pavement versus gravel or trails.
  5. Compare total value only after verifying fit and performance. A warranty-based cost calculation can help frame the price, but it cannot substitute for measured wear data or safety results in the conditions you encounter.

Why a verified “top 12” treadwear list is not supportable

The available comparisons do not provide a defensible set of 12 all-terrain tires with directly comparable, current UTQG grades and warranty figures for matching sizes and markets. The 2026 comparison’s warranty-based life analysis is not a measured wear ranking, while the 2025 ADAC test evaluates safety and other performance in one size rather than treadwear. Combining those lists into a ranked dozen would mix different models, generations, markets, and kinds of evidence.

For a credible model-by-model shortlist, verify each candidate’s exact size, current UTQG grade where listed, warranty mileage and exclusions, regional availability, and relevant test results. Without those like-for-like details, calling any tire a treadwear winner would overstate what the evidence shows.
