Start with Story Mode, build a six-unit team around clear roles, and treat every currency differently. In the original [OG] All Star Tower Defense on Roblox, you summon units, place them to stop enemy waves, and spend battle-earned Cash on upgrades. The official game listing from Top Down Games identifies Story Mode and the infinity tower as core activities. Community guides also describe Regular Infinite, Progressive Modes, Category Raids, and Gauntlet, but the live lobby is the authority for which modes, banners, events, and rewards are currently available.
What the original All Star Tower Defense loop looks like
This guide is for the original experience labeled [OG] All Star Tower Defense, not the separate All Star Tower Defense X experience. The distinction matters because the games do not necessarily share banners, refresh schedules, units, or progression rules.
The official Roblox description gives the basic loop: “Use your units to fend off waves of enemies.” You summon units through the Summon Gate, deploy them before or during waves, and upgrade them as a battle progresses. Units have individual abilities, and upgrades can unlock new attacks. You can play Story Mode cooperatively or test endurance in the infinity tower.
That means a beginner is solving two different problems:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Account progression: obtaining and improving a useful collection of units.
- Battle economy: earning and spending Cash efficiently during each match.
Do not confuse those systems. Gems, Gold, Stardust, Tokens, and Candy are account or lobby currencies described by a community-maintained guide. Cash is the temporary battle currency used to upgrade units during a run, and the guide says it resets when the battle ends.
Your first session: a practical starting route
- Confirm that you are in the original experience. Read the full Roblox experience title and developer listing before you spend time learning the systems. All Star Tower Defense X is a separate game.
- Enter the lobby and inspect the live interface. Check the Summon Gate, current banners, shops, event notices, and the mode portals. The official listing says new items appear in the original game’s Summon Gate and Emote Shop every hour; the lobby and its update board provide the current details.
- Make a first summon using the currency the banner requests. Do not assume that every banner takes Gems. Gold and Stardust are reported as separate summon currencies, and banner costs or availability can change.
- Assemble a six-slot team before queuing. Start with one leader, one principal damage unit, one economy unit, one buffer, and two support or utility slots. These are role-based beginner guidelines from a fan resource, not a permanent tier list.
- Play an early Story Mode stage. Story is the clearest place to learn placement, targeting, attack range, upgrade timing, and how much Cash each wave supplies. If a friend is available, cooperative Story Mode can make the first lessons less punishing.
- Place your cheapest reliable unit first. A unit that can cover the opening path is usually more useful than saving all of your Cash for a high-cost unit that cannot be deployed in time.
- Watch the next wave before buying every upgrade. Upgrade when the additional range, damage, attack speed, area coverage, or new attack solves the immediate threat. Avoid spending the entire balance on one unit if another lane or enemy type is about to become a problem.
- After the match, return to the lobby. Review which units contributed, which upgrades arrived too late, and whether your team lacked economy, damage, slowing, or coverage. Adjust one slot at a time so you can tell what improved.
How to build a beginner six-unit team
A six-unit roster is a useful planning limit because it forces you to cover different jobs instead of filling every slot with the same type of attacker. The community recommendation is functional rather than prescriptive: the exact best six units depend on the mode, current balance, availability, and the upgrades you actually own.

| Role | Job in a battle | What to look for | Common beginner mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leader | Provides a leader effect that complements the rest of the squad. | A bonus that helps your chosen damage plan or makes the team easier to deploy. | Choosing a leader for rarity alone while its effect does little for the team. |
| Main damage dealer | Handles the largest share of enemy health over the run. | Reliable damage, useful range, and an upgrade path you can afford in the selected mode. | Bringing several expensive attackers without enough early defense or Cash. |
| Economy unit | Improves the resources available during a battle, where the unit’s rules allow it. | A contribution that pays back before the stage’s important waves. | Buying economy too early when the opening lane is not yet secure. |
| Buffer | Improves allied performance through a team or nearby-unit effect. | A buff that reaches the units you actually use and remains valuable after upgrades. | Taking a buffer whose range or timing makes it impossible to apply consistently. |
| Slow or control support | Buys time by slowing, interrupting, or otherwise controlling enemies. | Consistent coverage of the path and a control effect that matters against the stage’s threats. | Assuming control replaces damage; stalled enemies still need to be defeated. |
| Flexible utility | Fills the gap left by the map or mode: extra area coverage, a second damage source, detection, or another support effect. | A unit that solves a specific weakness in the other five slots. | Leaving the slot undefined and then discovering that every unit performs the same job. |
Use this framework when you are still learning. Once you understand a map and its enemy waves, you can deliberately break the pattern—for example, replacing economy with another damage unit for a short challenge, or carrying extra control in a mode where surviving late waves matters more than fast clears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to evaluate a unit without relying on a “best unit” list
- Availability: Can you summon it from the current banner, or is it locked behind an event or rotation?
- Opening value: Can it be placed and upgraded before the first dangerous wave?
- Scaling: Does its upgrade path remain useful as enemy health increases?
- Coverage: Does it reach the path, air or ground targets where relevant, and the lanes your map uses?
- Team interaction: Does it benefit from your leader and buffer, or does it duplicate another unit’s effect?
- Mode fit: Is it designed for short progression stages, long endurance runs, restrictions, or a particular event?
These checks are safer than copying an old tier list. Community balance advice can age quickly when units, banners, and modes change.
Understanding every currency
The following six-currency breakdown comes from a fan-maintained All Star Tower Defense guide. It is a description of the reported system, not a guarantee that every banner, shop, event, threshold, or earning method will remain unchanged. Read the current in-game label before spending.
| Currency | Reported purpose | How to think about it as a beginner | What may change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gems | Hero Summon pulls. | Save them for a banner whose available units fit your team rather than spending automatically on the first screen. | Pull costs, rewards, banner contents, and pity rules. |
| Gold | Secondary Hero Summon currency. | Check the current summon interface to see which banner accepts it and whether the resulting units fill a role you lack. | Summon availability, exchange rules, and costs. |
| Stardust | Special Summon and Dual Starhunt banners. | Treat it as a specialist banner currency; do not assume a regular summon can use it. | Banner schedule, eligibility, costs, and featured units. |
| Cash | Upgrading units during a battle. | Budget it wave by wave. The community guide says it is earned during waves and resets at battle end. | Income rules, upgrade prices, wave rewards, and mode-specific behavior. |
| Tokens | Lobby purchases and shops. | Open the relevant shop first. A token balance has no universal value outside the current shop rules. | Shop inventory, event rotations, and purchase limits. |
| Candy | Emote Shop and event-related purchases. | Spend it only after confirming that the associated event shop or emote inventory is active. | Event availability, eligible items, earning methods, and expiry behavior. |
Cash is not the same as your lobby currencies
Cash appears inside a battle and pays for unit placement or upgrades according to the stage’s rules. It is not a bank balance you carry from one run to the next. If you finish a stage with unspent Cash, do not expect it to become Gems, Gold, Stardust, Tokens, or Candy.
The other currencies are visible in the lobby and are associated with summons, shops, or events. Because those systems rotate, the safest routine is:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open the banner or shop that interests you.
- Read its displayed currency and cost.
- Check the featured units or items and any expiry notice.
- Spend only when the purchase addresses a role or objective you have identified.
Avoid treating old code lists, farming routes, pity targets, or event-expiry claims as evergreen instructions. The available material does not establish a permanent code, universal fastest farm, or fixed pity threshold for every current banner.
Battle economy: spending Cash without collapsing your defense
Cash management is a sequence of decisions, not a single “upgrade the strongest unit” rule.

Secure the opening
Deploy a unit that can attack the first enemies at a reasonable cost. If the first wave reaches the exit, a later high-level unit cannot repair that lost defense. Place for path coverage and range, not merely for visual proximity to the spawn point.
Buy the upgrade that changes the next wave
Prioritize an upgrade when it adds the property you need: enough damage to defeat an enemy before it leaves range, enough range to cover a bend, area damage against a group, or a new attack that addresses the current threat. A small statistical increase can be correct when it prevents a leak; a large upgrade can be wasteful when the map is already safe.

Protect your next deployment
Do not spend down to zero if the next wave requires a second lane, a support unit, or a response to a faster enemy. Keep a mental reserve for the next decision rather than treating the current wave as the only problem.
Use economy only after it pays back
An economy unit is valuable when it has time to produce more value than its deployment and upgrade cost. On a short or already-failing stage, spending on immediate defense may be better. On a longer run, economy can create the budget needed for late upgrades. Test the timing in Story Mode before relying on it in endurance play.

Separate placement errors from unit errors
If a unit underperforms, ask whether it was placed outside the path, lacked buff coverage, was upgraded too late, or faced a countered enemy type. Replacing the unit is not always the solution.
Game modes: what to play and when
The official Roblox listing specifically names Story Mode and the infinity tower. A fan-maintained community resource additionally labels Regular Infinite, Progressive Modes, Category Raids, and Gauntlet. Those additional names and their rules should be treated as community terminology until you confirm the current portal descriptions in the live lobby.
| Mode or label | Best beginner question | What is established | What to verify in the lobby |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story Mode | Can I learn the core loop and progress through stages? | The official listing identifies it as a playable mode, including cooperative play. | Stage availability, map requirements, current rewards, and recommended difficulty. |
| Infinity tower | How long can my team survive against continuing waves? | The official listing names the infinity tower as part of the game. | Wave structure, entry requirements, reward milestones, and whether the current version uses a separate portal label. |
| Regular Infinite | Do I want repeatable endurance play with a standard ruleset? | The community resource uses this label. | Current wave rules, rewards, restrictions, and whether it is separate from the infinity tower portal. |
| Progressive Modes | Can I handle a mode that changes difficulty or rules as I advance? | The community resource lists this category. | How progression works, what changes between stages, and the displayed rewards. |
| Category Raids | Can my roster meet a category-based restriction? | The community resource lists this label. | Allowed unit categories, entry conditions, party size, and current reward table. |
| Gauntlet | Do I want a challenge format built around a sequence of fights? | The community resource lists this label. | Run length, modifiers, checkpoints, failure rules, and rewards. |
A sensible order for new players
- Story Mode first: learn placement, targeting, upgrades, and wave pacing on a mode whose purpose is progression.
- Cooperative Story Mode next: use a teammate to observe different roles and see how two squads cover a map.
- Infinity or the current Infinite portal: move into endurance play after your team can reliably clear early waves without emergency spending.
- Progressive, raid, or Gauntlet labels: enter after reading the portal’s restrictions. These formats may reward a specialized roster rather than your general Story team.
There is no supported universal claim that one mode is always the best farm. Rewards, restrictions, and even the active mode roster can change, so compare the values displayed in the lobby for your immediate goal.

If your goal is testing endurance
Choose the currently available infinity or Infinite option and build for scaling: dependable damage, enough economy for late upgrades, and control that continues to matter as waves become tougher. Record where the run fails rather than judging the team only by its final wave.
If your goal is an event item or shop currency
Read the event panel and the mode’s displayed reward before starting. Candy and Tokens are reported as shop or event currencies, but the available evidence does not establish a permanent reward route. Follow the active event text rather than an old guide.
If your goal is a challenge clear
Inspect category or Gauntlet restrictions first, then rebuild the six slots around what is permitted. A normally excellent unit is irrelevant if the current rule excludes it.
Rotation timing and the OG-versus-X trap
The official listing for the original game says that new things appear in the Summon Gate and Emote Shop every hour. The official listing for the separate All Star Tower Defense X experience says its Summon Gate refreshes every 30 minutes. Do not use the X schedule to predict the original game’s rotation, and do not infer that the same units or currencies appear in both games.
Best Value
Because the original listing and in-game banners can be updated independently, check the timer displayed at the Summon Gate when you are ready to spend. A guide written before the current rotation may describe a banner that is no longer visible.
Common beginner mistakes and fixes
- Joining the wrong experience: Confirm the full [OG] title before following a guide. The X game is separate.
- Using all six slots for damage: Replace at least one duplicate attacker with economy, buff, slowing, or another utility role if your runs fail from poor timing rather than insufficient final damage.
- Saving for a late unit while the opening leaks: Deploy an affordable defender first and preserve the run.
- Spending Cash as soon as it appears: Wait long enough to identify the next wave’s threat and keep a reserve for a second deployment.
- Assuming rarity equals usefulness: Evaluate range, upgrade timing, coverage, and interaction with your leader and buffer.
- Treating a community tier list as official: The role advice and mode labels come from fan-maintained resources. Verify current balance and restrictions in the game.
- Confusing currencies: Read the banner or shop’s currency label. Cash is battle-only according to the community currency guide; Gems, Gold, Stardust, Tokens, and Candy serve other reported purposes.
- Spending event currency immediately: Inspect the complete event shop and its end notice before buying. Event rules can rotate.
- Assuming a reward table is permanent: Compare the current lobby display with any outside guide before farming.
- Buying equipment because a guide sounds incomplete: No physical product, accessory, replacement part, or paid item is identified as necessary for the beginner progression described here. The game systems are in Roblox.
A repeatable improvement checklist
After each failed or inefficient run, answer these questions in order:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Which wave first became unsafe?
- Did the first unit arrive early enough and cover the path?
- Would a range, damage, area, or control upgrade have solved that wave?
- Did an economy unit pay back before the failure point?
- Were the main damage unit and buffer actually within useful coverage?
- Did the team lack a role, or did a role arrive at the wrong time?
- Is the current mode imposing a restriction that invalidates the normal team?
- Would changing one slot address the observed failure better than replacing the whole roster?
Make the smallest change that answers the failure. This keeps your own results interpretable and prevents chasing a new unit every time a run ends.
What the official information does—and does not—tell you
The official game description establishes the wave-defense loop, unit abilities and upgrades, Story Mode, cooperative play, the infinity tower, and the original game’s hourly Summon Gate and Emote Shop statement. It does not provide a complete permanent reward table, mode restriction chart, current banner schedule, or universal beginner tier list.
The community resources fill in useful role and currency terminology, but their detailed earning rates, thresholds, codes, event behavior, and balance recommendations are time-sensitive. Use them as orientation, then confirm the live game before committing scarce currencies or building a team around a restricted mode.

- Check each banner’s required currency before spending Gems, Gold, or Stardust.
- Check whether Tokens or Candy shops and events are currently active.
- Move to Infinity or other community-listed modes only after reading their live rules.
