There is no universal runtime winner. Battery model, device load, temperature and the device’s low-voltage cutoff all change the result. In Energizer’s product-specific comparison at a stated 20°C, its Ultimate Lithium AA runs longer than its compared alkaline AA in several device categories. Treat that as manufacturer test evidence, not a guarantee for every AA cell or device. Use lithium primary AA when the device permits it and you need longer intervals between changes or cold-weather performance; use alkaline AA for compatible, modest or intermittent loads.
What “lasts longer” actually means
Runtime is the time a battery can power a particular device until that device decides the voltage is too low. It is not a single capacity number that transfers unchanged from a flashlight to a camera, toy or remote control.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Load: A camera flash or high-rate toy draws current in bursts; a clock or remote may draw very little. The same cell can deliver different usable energy under those two profiles.
- Temperature: Cold changes how a cell delivers current. A battery that works acceptably indoors may reach a device’s cutoff sooner outside.
- Cutoff voltage: Electronics stop at different voltages. Two devices using the same AA cells can therefore report different “empty” times.
- Cell model: “Alkaline” and “lithium primary” are chemistry families, not one standardized cell with one runtime.
For a meaningful comparison, test the exact two products in the exact device, under the temperatures and load pattern that matter to you. A manufacturer chart using a different device category is useful guidance, but it is not a universal capacity ranking.

Energizer’s 2024 Ultimate Lithium AA product sheet compares its Ultimate Lithium AA (L91/FR6) with an alkaline AA under a heading of “Typical Performance at 20°C.” The results are product-specific and were supplied by the manufacturer; they are not an independent laboratory test.

| Device category named in the sheet | Result reported in the comparison | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Digital camera | Ultimate Lithium AA shows longer runtime than the compared alkaline AA | A camera load can favor the lithium product in this manufacturer scenario; your camera’s flash use, firmware and cutoff can change the outcome. |
| Digital audio | Ultimate Lithium AA shows longer runtime | The result applies to the named products and the sheet’s test conditions, not every audio device. |
| High-rate toy | Ultimate Lithium AA shows longer runtime | High current demand is the reason to examine this category, but the exact toy remains decisive. |
| High-intensity lighting | Ultimate Lithium AA shows longer runtime | A bright lamp can draw substantially more current than a remote; use the product sheet as an example rather than a promise. |
| Other categories listed by Energizer | The sheet shows smaller differences between the two products | “Lithium lasts longer” is not equally large in every application. |
The chart’s 20°C label matters. It describes a typical test temperature, not a guarantee at 20°C in every home, and it does not establish that all lithium AA cells outperform all alkaline AA cells.
Energizer also labels the product “Excellent Low Temp Performance” in the sheet and lists an operating range of −40°F to 140°F (−40°C to 60°C) for Ultimate Lithium AA. Those are claims for that named product. They should not be extended automatically to every primary lithium battery.
“Lithium primary” is not one interchangeable battery
Primary means non-rechargeable. Within that group are different chemistries, sizes, terminal designs and voltages. A 1.5 V lithium AA is designed around the AA form factor; it is not interchangeable with every cell marketed as lithium primary.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor example, Panasonic’s CR2450A specification identifies a 3 V primary lithium coin cell. It cannot replace a 1.5 V AA merely because both are lithium primary batteries. A device manual that calls for a CR2450A, an AA, an AAA or another format is specifying more than chemistry: it is specifying physical fit, voltage and electrical behavior.
Likewise, an AA-shaped cell can still be unsuitable if the device requires a particular chemistry or warns against lithium cells. Follow the maker’s instructions rather than inferring compatibility from the letters “AA” or the word “lithium.”
Temperature: when lithium has an advantage, and where the qualification matters
Cold-weather claims must be tied to an exact model. Energizer lists −40°C to 60°C for its Ultimate Lithium AA, which is a wide stated operating range for that product. If a compatible device is used outdoors in winter, in an unheated building or during travel through cold conditions, that specification is a reason to consider the product.
Panasonic’s dry-battery FAQ gives broader guidance for Panasonic primary dry batteries: an optimal operating range of 5°C to 45°C, with performance and lifespan potentially reduced outside that range. This is Panasonic’s guidance, not a universal limit for every alkaline or lithium cell. The specification for the exact battery remains the controlling document.

- Performs in extreme temperatures from -40 degrees F to 140 degrees F to ensure reliable use in all seasons
- These double A batteries are leak proof batteries, guaranteed based on standard use

Temperature is only one part of the decision. A device can still stop early because its electronics require a minimum voltage, because its load is unusually high, or because cells have been stored or installed in a way the manufacturer does not permit.
When to choose lithium primary AA
Demanding or high-rate devices
Choose a compatible lithium AA when the device consumes batteries quickly, draws substantial current or is inconvenient to reopen frequently. Energizer’s camera, digital-audio, high-rate-toy and high-intensity-lighting examples show where its Ultimate Lithium AA produced longer runtime than the compared alkaline AA at 20°C. The result is a reason to evaluate that product, not a promise that every high-drain device will behave identically.
Cold conditions
If the manual allows lithium AA and the device must operate in cold weather, use the exact model’s temperature specification. The −40°F to 140°F (−40°C to 60°C) range belongs to Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA. Do not assume another lithium AA has the same range.
Long storage before use
Energizer’s 2024 sheet claims a 25-year shelf life for Ultimate Lithium AA. That is a product-sheet claim, not a guarantee for all lithium primary cells, and shelf life does not remove the need to inspect packaging, terminals and the device before installation.

Modest or intermittent loads
Alkaline AA remains relevant for compatible everyday devices whose power demand is modest or intermittent, such as equipment that is used briefly and often. In these situations, the practical choice depends on the device manual, local purchase price and how often replacement is acceptable.
Devices that specify alkaline
If the manufacturer specifies alkaline AA, follow that instruction. A lithium AA may fit physically yet still be inappropriate because the device’s voltage limits, charging circuit, temperature assumptions or safety instructions were designed around alkaline cells.
When replacement convenience is unimportant
If changing cells is easy and the device is used near room temperature, the longer runtime shown in a product-specific lithium comparison may not justify choosing a different chemistry. Compare the total cost and replacement frequency for your own use rather than assuming one chemistry is cheaper overall.

Check compatibility before substituting lithium for alkaline
Use this sequence before installing a different chemistry:
- Read the device label and manual. Confirm the required size, nominal voltage and permitted chemistry. Look for warnings such as “alkaline only,” “do not use lithium,” or a prohibition on rechargeable cells.
- Verify the physical format. AA, AAA, coin and specialty cells are not interchangeable. Check terminal orientation and that the door closes without force.
- Confirm the cell is primary. A non-rechargeable lithium AA must never be placed in a charger or a device that charges its installed batteries.
- Use a matched set. Replace all cells in a multi-cell device at the same time. Do not combine old and new cells or different chemistries.
- Check the operating environment. Compare the exact product’s temperature specification with the conditions in which the device will run.
- Observe the first run. If the device displays an error, shuts down immediately or becomes unusually warm, remove the cells and consult the device and battery instructions instead of forcing operation.
Sharing an AA shape does not establish electrical compatibility. Size, voltage, chemistry and the device’s cutoff behavior all have to agree.
Compare total value, not a generic “cheaper” label
No current, location-specific price comparison is established here, so it would be misleading to declare alkaline or lithium cheaper in every case. Prices, pack sizes and replacement rates vary by country, retailer and date.
For a device that permits both chemistries, record the price of a complete set and the runtime you actually obtain. A useful calculation is cost per usable hour = price for the installed set ÷ hours until the device’s normal cutoff. Also record how many times per year you replace the set and the cost or inconvenience of access. A higher-priced set can cost less per hour if it lasts substantially longer; a low-drain device may not show that advantage.
| Comparison axis | Question to answer | Evidence to use |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime | How long does the exact device run before its normal cutoff? | Your device’s results or a manufacturer test that matches its load; Energizer’s chart is an example at 20°C. |
| Temperature | Will the cells work in the intended hot or cold environment? | The exact battery model’s operating specification, not a generic chemistry label. |
| Purchase and replacement cost | What is the dated local price and how often will a set be replaced? | Current local prices plus your measured replacement interval. |
| Compatibility | Does the device explicitly allow the size and chemistry? | The device maker’s label and manual. |
| Storage and disposal | How should unused or depleted cells be stored and discarded? | The battery maker’s instructions and local waste rules. |
How to make a fair at-home comparison
If the manual permits both chemistries, a simple log can answer the runtime question for your actual use. Start with two fresh, matched sets of the same size. Note the date, room or outdoor temperature, device settings and the kind of activity being performed. Install one chemistry at a time rather than combining cells, and use the device until its normal low-battery warning or shutdown. Record the hours or number of operating cycles, then repeat on another occasion if the result is surprising.
Keep the test conditions as similar as practical: the same brightness setting for a light, the same pattern of play for a toy or the same number of flash-heavy sessions for a camera. A short indoor test cannot establish cold-weather performance, and a result from one device cannot be transferred to another with a different cutoff. The goal is a decision for your device, not a universal ranking.
When calculating value, use the price of all cells installed together, not the price of one cell from a multipack. Include the time and inconvenience of changing batteries, especially if the equipment is mounted, outdoors or used where access is difficult. Keep the log with the product name and purchase date so a later pack can be compared on equal terms.

Common mistakes that produce disappointing results
- Assuming every lithium cell is an AA substitute: A 3 V coin cell and a 1.5 V AA have different dimensions and electrical requirements.
- Reading a room-temperature chart as a winter guarantee: Energizer’s comparison is labeled typical performance at 20°C, while each model has its own temperature specification.
- Changing only one cell: A multi-cell device should receive a complete matched set; mixing ages or types can cause uneven discharge.
- Putting primary cells in a charger: Non-rechargeable batteries are not designed to be recharged.
- Calling shelf life runtime: Energizer’s 25-year figure concerns storage life for Ultimate Lithium AA, not how long a cell powers a particular device.
- Assuming the cheapest pack has the lowest operating cost: Replacement frequency and usable hours determine cost for your situation.
- Treating disposal advice as universal: US household-trash guidance does not automatically apply in another country or municipality.
Safe handling and storage practices
Duracell’s battery-care guidance says: “Use the correct size and type of battery specified by the manufacturer of your device.” It also instructs users to replace batteries in a device at the same time, avoid mixing old and new batteries or different types, remove depleted batteries promptly and never attempt to recharge non-rechargeable batteries.
These rules apply whether the cells are alkaline or primary lithium. Mixing can create unequal discharge, leakage or unexpected device behavior. If a cell is damaged, leaking, swollen or hot, stop using the device, keep the material away from skin and follow the product and local hazardous-material instructions.

Store spare cells in their original packaging where terminals cannot contact metal objects. Do not carry loose cells with keys, coins or other conductive items. For exact storage temperature, humidity and terminal-isolation requirements, use the battery maker’s label; Panasonic’s guidance specifically directs users to follow local disposal laws and isolate terminals for its cited products.
Disposal depends on where you live
For the United States, the US Environmental Protection Agency says: “In most communities, alkaline and zinc carbon batteries can be safely put in your household trash.” The qualification matters: check your state, municipality or local recycler before discarding cells, because rules and collection programs differ.
Do not turn that US guidance into a worldwide rule. Outside the United States, follow the applicable local collection instructions. Some jurisdictions or retailers accept batteries through dedicated take-back programs, and the battery or device maker may require terminals to be covered before transport. When in doubt, use a local household-battery recycler or your government’s waste guidance.

| Your situation | Starting choice | Reason and check |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible camera, high-rate toy or bright light that drains AA cells quickly | Consider lithium primary AA | Energizer’s 20°C product comparison reports longer Ultimate Lithium AA runtime in these named categories. Verify your device permits lithium. |
| Compatible device used outdoors in cold conditions | Consider the lithium model with a suitable specification | Energizer lists −40°C to 60°C for Ultimate Lithium AA; confirm the exact product and device requirements. |
| Remote, clock or other modest/intermittent load that specifies alkaline AA | Alkaline AA | Follow the manual; measure whether longer lithium runtime would justify its local price. |
| Manual does not identify permitted chemistry | Do not substitute yet | Obtain the device maker’s instructions. Matching the AA shape alone is insufficient. |
| Device contains mixed ages or chemistries | Replace the complete set with matched cells | Duracell advises replacing batteries together and not mixing old, new or different types. |
| Cells are depleted | Remove them promptly and follow local disposal rules | US EPA guidance covers alkaline and zinc-carbon in most communities; local rules control, especially outside the United States. |
Bottom line for the choice
Pick the battery by device, not by the word “lithium” or “alkaline” on the package. A compatible lithium primary AA is the stronger candidate when you need long intervals, face demanding loads or operate in cold conditions and the exact model supports those conditions. Alkaline AA is still a sound option for compatible, modest or intermittent devices. Check size, voltage and chemistry first, then compare dated local cost and real replacement frequency.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do lithium AA batteries last longer than alkaline AA batteries?
Sometimes. Energizer’s 2024 Ultimate Lithium AA sheet reports longer runtime than its compared alkaline AA in digital-camera, digital-audio, high-rate-toy and high-intensity-lighting categories at a typical 20°C. The result is specific to those products, devices and test conditions; load profile and cutoff voltage can change the outcome.

Are lithium AA batteries better in cold weather?
A compatible model may perform better in cold conditions, but check its own specification. Energizer lists −40°F to 140°F (−40°C to 60°C) for Ultimate Lithium AA. Panasonic gives 5°C to 45°C as an optimal range for its primary dry batteries and warns that performance and lifespan may decline outside it.
Can I use lithium AA batteries instead of alkaline AA?
Only when the device maker permits the size, voltage and chemistry. An AA shape alone does not prove compatibility. Read the label and manual for warnings such as alkaline-only, do-not-use-lithium or charging restrictions before substituting.
Can primary lithium batteries be recharged?
No. Primary batteries are non-rechargeable. Never put a primary lithium AA or alkaline cell in a charger or a device that charges installed batteries; use only the rechargeable chemistry and charger specified by the manufacturer.
Should I mix lithium and alkaline batteries in one device?
No. Use a complete matched set. Duracell advises replacing all batteries at the same time and avoiding combinations of old and new cells or different types. Mixing can produce uneven discharge and unexpected device behavior.
Is lithium AA cheaper than alkaline AA?
There is no universal answer. Compare dated local prices, the cost of a complete installed set and your measured runtime. Cost per usable hour is the set price divided by hours until normal device cutoff; replacement frequency and access inconvenience also matter.
How long can Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries be stored?
Energizer’s 2024 product sheet claims a 25-year shelf life for Ultimate Lithium AA. That claim applies to that named product, not every lithium primary cell. Keep cells in their packaging, inspect them before use and follow the label’s storage guidance.
Can alkaline batteries go in household trash?
In the United States, the EPA says alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries can be safely put in household trash in most communities, but advises checking state and local rules or a recycler. Disposal requirements differ by location, so do not apply the US guidance automatically elsewhere.
