Alex Tuch scored twice in the first period of his Washington Capitals debut, helping Washington beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-2 in Raleigh on Friday, October 2, 2026. Carolina had lost its first two games, but its official record after this one was 0-1-1 because its opening loss came in overtime.
How the Capitals built their lead
Tuch opened the scoring at 6:33 of the first period. Pierre-Luc Dubois stripped Carolina goalie Brandon Bussi of the puck behind the net and fed Tuch in front. Cole Hutson made it 2-0 at 11:33, finishing a pass from Ilya Protas. At 14:23, Tuch scored his second goal after Tom Wilson’s shot trickled through Bussi.
Jakob Chychrun extended Washington’s lead to 4-0 with a power-play goal at 1:36 of the second period. Carolina’s Sebastian Aho scored on the power play, but Ryan Leonard answered eight seconds later to make it 5-1. Dylan Stankoven scored Carolina’s final goal in the third period. NHL.com’s game recap lists the final score as Washington 5, Carolina 2.
Tuch’s first game with Washington
The two-goal first period made Tuch the second player in Capitals history to score multiple goals in the opening period of his team debut, according to NHL.com. Brian Bellows was the first, doing so on March 28, 1998.

Goalies and other Washington contributions
- Washington goalie Logan Thompson made 31 saves. NHL.com’s game feature says he stopped 14 of 15 shots while the Capitals were short-handed.
- Carolina goalie Brandon Bussi made 22 saves.
- Chychrun finished with a goal and an assist; Dubois and Dylan Strome each recorded two assists.
Why Carolina’s record was 0-1-1, not 0-2
Carolina had lost both games it had played, so “0-2 start” describes its number of losses. The NHL record shown after the Capitals game was 0-1-1: one regulation loss and one overtime loss. Under the league’s standings format, an overtime loss earns a point, which is why the record does not read 0-2-0. The distinction is also noted in the Associated Press report.
