Neither format is a universal winner: the beer itself, serving size, local price, freshness, equipment, and handling matter more than the container alone.
For a fair decision, compare the same style and brand in an equal volume, calculate the price per serving, check how the venue maintains its draft system, and confirm what “alcohol-free” means in your market. The evidence available does not establish a general taste champion or a reliable draft-versus-packaged price advantage.

What you are actually comparing
“On tap” means beer dispensed from a keg or other bulk container through a venue’s draft system. The beer is chilled and pushed through lines to a faucet, so the final experience depends on the product, gas system, temperature, glassware, line cleanliness, and the person pouring it.

They are sealed before sale, can be chilled at home or by a retailer, and can be served directly or poured into a glass. Packaging protects the beer from handling after it leaves the producer, but storage temperature, light exposure, age, and transport still affect the result.

At-a-glance comparison
| Decision factor | Draught or on tap | Bottles and cans | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Usually set by the venue and serving size; the draft system, labor, storage, and wastage are part of the operation. | Varies with brand, pack size, retailer, promotions, and whether you buy one unit or a multipack. | No like-for-like price comparison establishes a cheaper format. |
| Choice and availability | Found at selected venues and markets; availability depends on the brand, keg format, and compatible equipment. | Documented for several alcohol-free products and available through retail channels in formats intended for take-home use. | No complete market-by-market inventory of alcohol-free draught was established. |
| Serving experience | Freshly poured presentation, venue glassware, and immediate service. | Ready to chill, carry, store, or pour into a glass on your schedule. | No controlled sensory study proves that one format tastes better. |
| Quality and handling | Depends heavily on product, temperature, pressure, line hygiene, turnover, and staff training. | Sealed packaging limits post-packaging contact; storage conditions and package age still matter. | Non-alcohol beer has specific microbial-stability considerations; do not generalize from them to every keg or package. |
| Venue economics | A small English field trial found lower alcoholic-draught volume after an alcohol-free line was introduced, with no evidence of a total-revenue effect. | The trial did not test packaged beer against draught pricing. | The result is preliminary and specific to the participating venues. |
Cost: compare equal servings, not containers
Why a pint-versus-pack comparison can mislead
A menu price for a draft pour and a retail price for a bottle or can often represent different volumes. A multipack may also receive a promotion that a single bottle does not. Compare the amount of beer you will actually drink, then convert both options to the same volume.
Use this calculation:
Price per equal serving = total price ÷ total volume purchased × the comparison volume.
For a pub visit, use the price printed on that venue’s current menu and the stated pour size. For take-home beer, include the number of units and the volume printed on each package. If a venue serves a smaller or larger pour than you expected, recalculate instead of relying on the word “pint” or “bottle.”
What drives a draft price
- The venue’s rent, staffing, glassware, refrigeration, and cleaning costs.
- Keg size and how quickly the product sells before quality declines.
- Gas, couplers, line-cleaning schedules, and any specialist equipment required for the beer.
- Beer lost through foamy pours, line changes, or an infrequently used tap.
- Local taxes, service charges, and the venue’s overall pricing policy.
These costs mean a draft serving can be priced above or below an apparently similar packaged serving. They do not prove that the format itself is inherently more expensive.

What drives a packaged price
- Single-unit versus multipack pricing.
- Can or bottle size and the total volume in the pack.
- Retailer promotions, deposit schemes, and local taxes.
- Delivery or convenience costs when buying online or from a distant shop.
- How the beer was stored before you bought it.
Retail packaging can be the better value for a drinker who wants several servings at home, but that conclusion must come from the local shelf price and volume. The available evidence does not support a blanket claim that cans or bottles are cheaper.
Choice and availability
Draft is a significant beer format, but not an alcohol-free market share
NIQ and Draftline Technologies reported in 2026 that draft represented 53.1% of all United States on-premise beer sales by volume and 49.9% by value. Its volume share had risen by two percentage points over two years. Those figures cover beer generally; they are not a measurement of alcohol-free beer. They show why a pub may invest in draft service, not how widely alcohol-free kegs are stocked.

Alcohol-free draught is commercially available in some European markets, but availability is venue-specific. The HEINEKEN Company reported in 2025 that Heineken 0.0 draught had expanded to 10,000 outlets across Europe. The company described 8-litre and 20-litre options as well as systems for higher-volume locations.
That 10,000-outlet figure is a company-reported rollout milestone, not an independent census of every alcohol-free tap. It also does not mean that every outlet carries the beer continuously, that the same equipment is used everywhere, or that comparable options are available in other regions.
HEINEKEN’s Michael Gillane, Regional Global Brands Director Europe, called the milestone evidence that alcohol-free beer had “truly entered the mainstream.” That is a company statement and should be read as such, rather than as independent proof of market-wide adoption.

Packaged formats are easier to find in some situations
Heineken documents 0.0 in both bottles and cans. Anheuser-Busch documents Budweiser Zero in can and bottle formats. These examples establish that packaged choices exist for named products; they do not rank those products or describe the complete alcohol-free market.
Packaged beer is usually more portable because it does not require a venue with a compatible keg, coupler, gas setup, and maintained lines. A retailer can stock it for take-home use, and you can keep a few units available without committing to a full keg. Draft, by contrast, can provide a pub-style experience that packaged beer cannot reproduce exactly.
Does alcohol-free beer taste better on tap?
No controlled sensory comparison in the available evidence establishes a universal taste winner between alcohol-free draught and the same beer in a bottle or can. Taste is affected by the recipe and by service conditions, so “on tap tastes better” is too broad to be reliable.
Why a good draft pour can seem fresher
- The beer is dispensed cold and served immediately.
- A clean glass and a competent pour can create the aroma and texture people associate with a pub beer.
- High turnover can reduce the time a keg spends in service.
- Gas pressure and temperature can be adjusted for the product.
Those advantages depend on execution. A warm line, dirty glass, incorrect pressure, or a keg that has been connected for too long can make a draft serving disappointing.
Why a package can taste better in practice
- The seal prevents contact with a venue’s draft lines after packaging.
- You control chilling, opening time, glassware, and pour speed.
- A can or bottle travels with you and can be stored for a later occasion.
- You can compare the same product from different batches or retailers.
Light, heat, age, and rough transport can still damage packaged beer. A bottle or can is not automatically fresher simply because it is sealed.

The fairest personal test
If the same alcohol-free beer is available in both formats, sample them as close together as practical. Match the serving temperature and volume, use the same type of clean glass if you pour both, and note the package date or best-before information. Treat the result as your preference for that product and those conditions, not as a rule for every alcohol-free beer.
Quality, safety, and microbial stability
Why alcohol-free beer needs careful handling
Removing or reducing alcohol changes some of the protection that conventional beer receives from alcohol and other parts of the brewing process. The Brewers Association describes distinct safety and production concerns for non-alcohol beer and discusses microbial stability in its technical material.
This does not mean that every alcohol-free keg is unsafe, nor that packaged beer is always superior. It means producers and venues need processes appropriate to the product, including correct chilling, sanitation, connection, turnover, and storage.
What pasteurization tells you
The Brewers Association notes that pasteurization can produce food-safe packaged beer. Pasteurization is one documented production approach; it does not remove the need to respect the package’s storage instructions or its date. Nor does the existence of pasteurized packaging prove that every packaged alcohol-free beer is pasteurized.

Questions to ask about a draft tap
- Is the alcohol-free line included in the venue’s normal line-cleaning program?
- Has the keg been kept at the recommended temperature?
- Does staff know the correct pressure and connection procedure for this product?
- Is the tap busy enough that the keg turns over appropriately?
- Will the venue follow the producer’s instructions for storage and service?
A responsible venue should be able to explain its procedures without suggesting that all alcohol-free draft is inherently risky. If the tap looks neglected, the beer is served warm, or staff cannot answer basic handling questions, choose a different serving or venue.

What the venue trial actually shows
A randomized crossover trial in 14 English venues examined what happened when one alcoholic draught beer was replaced with an alcohol-free draught beer. Across eight weeks, the intervention was associated with a 4% reduction in alcoholic draught volume.
The adjusted difference in total-drinks revenue was an increase of £61 per week, with a 95% confidence interval from a decrease of £328 to an increase of £450. Because that interval spans both directions, the authors found no evidence of an effect on revenue. They described the findings as preliminary.
This is useful evidence for a venue considering an alcohol-free tap, but it is not a guarantee of sales performance. The study involved 14 English venues, measured a specific intervention, and did not compare packaged beer with draught beer on price or taste. Results elsewhere may differ with local drinking patterns, menu prices, brand selection, season, and tap placement.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How to choose when you are ordering at a pub
- Check the exact beer. Ask for the brand, style, and whether the tap is currently pouring the alcohol-free version rather than a similarly named product.
- Confirm the serving volume and price. Compare the menu’s stated volume with the volume of a bottle or can you could buy elsewhere.
- Look at turnover. A busy tap is more likely to receive regular use, but turnover alone does not prove correct sanitation.
- Observe the pour. The glass should be clean, the beer should arrive at an appropriate temperature, and staff should not need repeated attempts to control excessive foam.
- Ask about storage if you are unsure. Staff should follow the producer’s handling instructions and venue cleaning schedule.
- Decide whether the setting is part of the value. A freshly poured beer with table service may be worth more to you than the lowest per-volume price.
How to choose bottles or cans for home
- Compare equal volume. Divide the full pack price by the total volume, then compare it with the draft serving you would otherwise buy.
- Check the label. Confirm the alcohol statement, package size, storage guidance, and date information that apply in your jurisdiction.
- Inspect storage conditions. Prefer stock kept cool and away from strong light; avoid visibly damaged or swollen packages.
- Plan your use. Buy a size you can consume while the beer is at its best rather than choosing a larger pack solely because its unit price appears lower.
- Serve consistently when comparing products. Chill each beer similarly and use the same glass if you want to judge aroma and texture.
What venues should evaluate before adding a tap
Equipment and operations
- Confirm that the proposed keg or container fits the venue’s coupler, refrigeration, gas, and dispense system.
- Obtain the producer’s written storage, temperature, pressure, cleaning, and connection instructions.
- Set a line-cleaning schedule that includes the alcohol-free product rather than treating it as an exception.
- Train every shift on identification, pouring, glassware, and changeover procedures.
- Track wastage, complaints, repeat orders, and sales by serving size.
Menu and pricing
- Show the alcohol-free option clearly instead of making customers ask whether a tap is available.
- Price it against the venue’s actual pour cost and the value of the service, not against an unrelated retail multipack.
- State the serving size so customers can make an honest per-volume comparison.
- Review performance over enough weeks to account for events, seasonality, and staff changes.
The English trial suggests that an alcohol-free draught option can coexist with alcoholic beer without demonstrated total-revenue damage in the participating venues. It does not supply a universal business case, so each venue should use its own sales and handling data.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using general draft-beer statistics as alcohol-free statistics. The 53.1% volume and 49.9% value figures describe all United States on-premise beer sales, not alcohol-free beer.
- Treating a rollout announcement as a global inventory. The 10,000 European outlets figure is reported by HEINEKEN and does not establish availability in every country or venue.
- Assuming the container determines taste. Recipe, age, temperature, glassware, pressure, and handling can outweigh the difference between a tap and a package.
- Comparing unlike serving sizes. A draft pour, bottle, and can may contain different volumes.
- Declaring every keg unsafe. The relevant issue is whether the product and venue follow appropriate microbial-control and sanitation procedures.
- Assuming sealed means perfect. Packaged beer can still suffer from heat, light, age, or poor transport.
- Ignoring local labeling rules. Alcohol-free terminology and thresholds vary by jurisdiction.
A practical decision framework
Choose draught when
- You value a pub setting and an immediate pour.
- The venue can explain its handling and cleaning practices.
- The beer you want is available on a well-maintained, active tap.
- The per-serving price is fair for the stated volume and service.
Choose bottles or cans when
- You need portability, storage, or a reliable supply at home.
- No trusted local venue offers the style you want on tap.
- You want to compare several products at the same temperature and serving volume.
- The local retail price per equal serving is better for your budget.
Choose by sampling when
- You can buy the same beer in both formats.
- You care more about flavor and texture than the setting.
- You are willing to control temperature, glassware, and timing so the comparison is fair.
Bottom line for shoppers and venues
For drinkers, the best format is the one that delivers the beer you want at a fair local price per equal serving, with convenient availability and trustworthy handling. A good draft setup can make alcohol-free beer feel like a normal pub order; a well-stored bottle or can can offer greater control and portability. For venues, the evidence supports testing an alcohol-free tap carefully rather than promising a guaranteed sales lift. Measure the real response of your customers, maintain the system rigorously, and keep the product and serving size clear on the menu.
