Occasional flyers who cannot use those airline-specific benefits may have a harder time justifying the card. The current annual fee and full issuer terms were not confirmed in the available official materials, so check the live offer and your account disclosures before applying or deciding whether to keep it.
What changed: the card now carries Atmos Rewards branding
Alaska and Bank of America announced enhanced benefits for the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature in 2023. Alaska later said the card is being rebranded as the Atmos Rewards Ascent Visa Signature. The transition does not mean the card was discontinued: Alaska says existing account numbers and benefits continue. The familiar Alaska Airlines Visa name may still help when searching for the product, while current program materials use Atmos Rewards branding. Alaska’s 2023 announcement and its Atmos Rewards announcement distinguish the older benefit launch from the rebrand.

How the Companion Fare works—and where it applies
The standout benefit for many occasional flyers is a Companion Fare: Alaska’s 2025 announcement described a $99 base fare for a companion, plus taxes and fees starting at $23. The companion is not flying for only $99 in every circumstance; the total depends on applicable taxes and fees and the itinerary. Alaska’s announcement says the fare can be used on Alaska-operated and eligible regional flights, as well as Hawaiian Airlines flights within North America, including Hawaii. It excludes codeshare flights, and booking is through alaskaair.com.
Companion Fare codes are issued to eligible cardholders and may have an annual spending requirement. Alaska says codes are non-transferable and expire one year after issuance. The booking, fare, traveler, routing, and cancellation rules attached to the specific code matter, so read those terms before planning a trip. Alaska’s discount-code guidance explains the general rules; the certificate in your account is the relevant source for its particular conditions.

- Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
- This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
- To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
When it is useful for an occasional flyer
Estimate the benefit using a trip you would actually take: compare the companion’s otherwise-planned fare with the $99 base fare plus taxes and fees, then account for any change or cancellation restrictions in the certificate. A theoretical discount has no value if you cannot travel together, the route is ineligible, or the code expires before you can use it. The available terms do not support a universal savings estimate.
Checked bags: who is covered
Alaska’s April 2026 partnership announcement lists one free checked bag for the cardholder and up to six companions traveling on the same reservation. The benefit is not a blanket waiver for every airline, itinerary, or separately booked traveler. Alaska’s announcement describes the Ascent card benefit.

There is also a specific Hawaiian-operated-flight provision: Alaska’s April 2025 loyalty announcement says Alaska Visa Signature cardholders receive one free checked bag for themselves and up to six guests on the same reservation on Hawaiian-operated flights when they use the card to book. Check the current terms for the itinerary and reservation before relying on the waiver. Alaska’s Hawaiian loyalty announcement sets out that scope.

Current Alaska materials highlight 3x points on eligible Alaska and Hawaiian purchases and a $100 discount on an Alaska Lounge+ membership for Ascent cardholders. The Lounge+ discount matters only if the membership itself suits your travel; it is a discount, not a free membership. The complete current rewards rate table is not established by those materials. A January 2023 announcement described 2 miles per dollar in selected everyday categories, 3 miles per dollar on eligible Alaska purchases, and 1 mile per dollar on other purchases, along with other benefits and a then-current $95 annual fee. Those were terms reported at that time, not verified current card terms; they should not be used as today’s fee, earning schedule, or offer. The announcement is historical.
Is the card worth it if you fly only a few times a year?
Judge it by benefits you can realistically use, not by a headline point multiplier. Since the current annual fee was not confirmed in the available official materials, first check the issuer’s current application disclosures or your account terms. Then consider:

- Companion Fare: Can you use the code before it expires on a trip and route it covers, with a second traveler on the booking?
- Checked bags: Do you pay to check bags on eligible Alaska or covered Hawaiian-operated trips, and do your companions share the qualifying reservation?
- Eligible airfare: Do you buy Alaska or Hawaiian flights often enough to use the stated 3x points benefit?
- Lounge+: Would you buy an Alaska Lounge+ membership without the discount, or does the $100 reduction change your decision?
- Issuer terms: Does the current fee, APR, welcome offer, and eligibility language work for your situation?
Do not count a benefit at its advertised maximum if your travel patterns make it unlikely you will use it. Likewise, do not assign a cash value to points without a current valuation method. If your trips are infrequent, routes are not eligible, or you travel alone and do not check bags, compare the confirmed fee and terms with the benefits you would actually redeem rather than assuming the card pays for itself.
What to verify before applying or keeping the card
Alaska’s published materials establish several travel benefits, but they do not establish the card’s current annual fee, APR, welcome offer, full earning structure, or all application eligibility terms. Confirm those directly in the current Bank of America application disclosures or your card agreement. Also review the terms attached to your Companion Fare and the reservation-specific baggage conditions; announced program benefits are not a substitute for the terms governing your account and booking.
