Alan Ritchson is being reported as Jason Momoa’s replacement in Sony’s live-action Helldivers movie, but the available coverage does not establish that Sony or PlayStation has officially confirmed the casting. TheWrap first reported Ritchson was “in talks” for a role as one of the Helldivers; later coverage described him as Momoa’s replacement.
Which movie is Alan Ritchson reportedly joining?
The project is a live-action adaptation of Helldivers, the satirical science-fiction shooter franchise developed by Arrowhead Game Studios. Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are producing it, and Justin Lin is directing. The games follow soldiers known as Helldivers as they fight alien threats on behalf of Super Earth. The film’s specific plot and characters have not been established in the reports cited here.

- June 8, 2026: TheWrap reported that Momoa had departed the film and that casting continued. Its report did not give a reason for his exit. Read TheWrap’s report on Momoa’s departure.
- September 18, 2026: TheWrap reported Ritchson was in talks to play one of the Helldivers. At that point, the report listed the film’s release date as November 10, 2027. Read TheWrap’s report on Ritchson’s talks.
- October 1, 2026: GamesRadar described Ritchson as replacing Momoa and reported a revised release date of June 9, 2028, citing Sony’s schedule update and Deadline’s report. Read GamesRadar’s update.
- October 6, 2026: The Direct used “officially replaces” in its headline, but its article attributed the casting and date information to other outlets rather than presenting a direct Sony or PlayStation casting announcement. Read The Direct’s article.
Has Sony officially confirmed Ritchson?
The reports reviewed do not include a direct casting announcement from Sony or PlayStation. TheWrap’s September wording was that Ritchson was “in talks”; later entertainment coverage called him Momoa’s replacement. Those are meaningful reports, but they are not the same as an on-the-record studio confirmation. “Reportedly replaces” is therefore more precise than “officially replaces” based on the cited coverage.
When is the Helldivers movie expected to arrive?
The latest reported theatrical date in the cited coverage is June 9, 2028, as reported by GamesRadar on October 1, 2026. TheWrap’s September 18 report had listed November 10, 2027, so the later date reflects a reported schedule change. Release plans can change; Sony’s schedule update is the basis for the newer date, not a guarantee that it will remain fixed.

What is known about the game’s audience?
TheWrap reported that Helldivers 2 had sold more than 12 million units across PlayStation 5 and PC in its first four months after launch in 2024. That is an early-sales figure, not a current lifetime total. Readers who want to try the source material can look for Helldivers 2 on PlayStation 5; the game listing also identifies the platform. This does not establish a movie tie-in product.
