MFA would block or disrupt many password-based attacks, but it cannot stop exploitation of an unpatched VPN appliance, router or backup server. Defenders need both phishing-resistant MFA and rigorous patching, exposure reduction, monitoring and tested recovery.
How Akira gets initial access
FBI and cybersecurity researchers documented several routes rather than a single Akira “入口.” The April 18, 2024 advisory identified VPN services without MFA, externally reachable RDP, spearphishing and valid credentials. The November 13, 2025 update retained those methods and described SonicWall VPN exploitation, brute force and password spraying, SSH access, and exploitation of unpatched backup infrastructure, including Veeam systems.

| Access path | What fails | Relevant protection |
|---|---|---|
| VPN without MFA | A stolen or sprayed password is sufficient to authenticate | Phishing-resistant MFA, strong identity controls and VPN logging |
| Vulnerable VPN, router or firewall | An appliance flaw can provide access without defeating a user’s second factor | Emergency firmware and software patching, vulnerability management and restricted administration |
| Externally exposed RDP | Internet-facing Windows remote access becomes a target for password attacks or exploitation | Close unused listeners; put required RDP behind a controlled gateway, enforce MFA and lockouts |
| Compromised backup infrastructure | An unpatched backup server can become an entry point and undermine recovery | Patch backup products, isolate management interfaces and protect backup copies from tampering |
What MFA does—and does not—solve
MFA adds a second proof of identity, so a password obtained through phishing, credential theft or password spraying is less useful by itself. CISA’s ransomware guidance specifically calls for phishing-resistant MFA on email, VPNs and accounts that reach critical systems. Passwordless methods can use two or more factors, such as a device PIN, fingerprint or cryptographic key.

It can resist common phishing and credential-replay techniques, but it does not patch a vulnerable appliance, close an exposed port, detect an attacker who already has a session, or restore encrypted files. MFA should therefore be treated as an identity control inside a layered program, not as a substitute for updates and network restrictions.

Why RDP remains dangerous after the first breach
Akira uses RDP in two distinct ways. An internet-facing RDP service can provide initial access. Once inside, attackers can use RDP for lateral movement between Windows systems, while SSH and stolen Kerberos authentication tickets provide additional movement options. A server that is “protected” by an internal address can still be risky if an intruder has already reached the network.
Inventory every RDP listener and remove public exposure that is not operationally required. For necessary access, use a controlled gateway or equivalent segmentation, require MFA, apply account lockout and rate-limit policies, and retain successful and failed login telemetry. Review dormant administrator accounts and restrict which systems may initiate remote sessions.

What changed in the 2025 Akira activity
The November 2025 update describes a broader operational toolkit and faster encryption. Operators used RDP, SSH and stolen Kerberos tickets for lateral movement; Ngrok, SystemBC and STONETOP in command-and-control or deployment activity; and FTP, SFTP and cloud services to move stolen data. The Akira_v2 encryptor was reported to encrypt faster and further inhibit recovery, reducing the time available for containment once deployment begins.
Priority actions for defenders
- Require phishing-resistant MFA. Apply it first to VPN, privileged accounts, email and systems containing critical data. Prefer hardware-backed or platform cryptographic credentials where supported.
- Patch the edge and backup layers. Put VPN, firewall, router, network-infrastructure and backup-product updates on an emergency timetable. Prioritize known exploited vulnerabilities named in the advisories, including CVE-2024-40766 and the listed Cisco, Veeam and other CVEs.
- Reduce RDP exposure. Identify every listener, close unused ports and route required sessions through controlled gateways. Enforce lockouts and collect login events centrally.
- Detect identity and remote-access abuse. Alert on password-spraying patterns, unusual VPN or SSH sessions, unexpected domain-account creation, anomalous Kerberos-ticket use and remote tools or tunnels that do not match normal administration.
- Protect exfiltration paths. Monitor unusual FTP, SFTP and cloud-service transfers, especially from servers that do not normally send large volumes of data.
- Preserve recovery options. Keep offline or otherwise protected backups, separate backup administration from ordinary domain credentials, and test restoration regularly. The advisories do not establish a universal restoration-time target, so each organization must set and test its own objective.
How to judge whether a defense is sufficient
Evaluate controls on four separate axes:
- Phishing and replay resistance: Cryptographic MFA is stronger than a password alone.
- Coverage of identity and appliance flaws: MFA helps with stolen credentials; only patching and exposure reduction address vulnerable VPN, router and backup products.
- Visibility: Centralized VPN, RDP, SSH, account-creation, Kerberos and data-transfer logs enable earlier detection.
- Recovery readiness: Protected, tested backups limit the damage if encryption succeeds.
No single control scores strongly on all four axes. A security key can protect an account while an unpatched VPN remains exploitable, and excellent logging cannot restore a backup repository that an attacker has erased.

What the advisories do not establish
The official advisories describe Akira activity across many businesses and critical-infrastructure sectors, but they do not provide one authoritative aggregate victim count, ransom total or loss figure. Those numbers should not be inferred from the technical observations.

Will enabling MFA stop Akira ransomware?
It can block or disrupt password-based VPN and account attacks, especially when MFA is phishing-resistant. It will not prevent exploitation of an unpatched VPN, router or backup server, nor stop lateral movement after another system is compromised.

Should RDP be disabled completely?
Disable unused or internet-facing RDP. If a business process requires it, restrict access through a controlled gateway, require MFA and lockouts, segment systems and log every attempt.
